Yup i'd agree with that. Directories can be a good way to get started, but your right about low value. Having said that i read a blog about a guy who did nothing but dirs and got to page one within a week as there was something Google hadn't picked up on. Social media is a great way to get the message out about your brand, product or website too!

[...] Does link building still work? It all depends on what you mean by link building. Link exchanges and directory submissions won’t do much for your SEO efforts. However, quality content promoted through social media and other channels is the key. Alysson Fergison has a good article on this very topic here. [...]

@SEOVancouver - I certainly do recommend article submissions as a valid means of building links, but because of its abuse by spammers in recent years the links tend to be of lesser quality than in the past. It is still a valid link building technique, but doesn't help to build the kind of rapport that being involved with a community at a popular blog or social media outlet will. The goal isn't only to create the links, but to give others reason to build links for you because of the networking and resulting relationships that result.

Good point, though! I probably should have mentioned article submissions...

[...] What are we searching for? Bill Slawski analyzes a recent Yahoo! study on web search queries. The researchers have arrived at some interesting insights into search engine user behavior. Some of the findings are counterintuitive, to say the least. The lesson? Don’t assume. Test. Does link building still work? It all depends on what you mean by link building. Link exchanges and directory submissions won’t do much for your SEO efforts. However, quality content promoted through social media and other channels is the key. Alysson Fergison has a good article on this very topic here. [...]

Thanks so much for your article - have already implemented several of the points you have mentioned.

We're sponsoring a global project right now (Catlin Arctic Survey) and that was what prompted me to search for ways I could increase our Google ranking and site traiffic.

The likes of Digg, Reddit and Identi.ca are just the type of things I was after to raise awareness for the survey and also our involvement.

Thanks for your advice!
