Social media is surely overwhelming and very much crowded. I agree with Jenn that we should always find our targeted social networks and work on one or two major social media networks to manage our overall social media presence. I personally think twitter to be the fastest to interact with people, give / take feedbacks, and make faster decisions in business.

The time we spend on these networks if organized with a social media strategy can be very beneficial. That is the reason I think people are getting geared towards using social networks more seriously.

Kelvin, actually that's one of the big mistakes - sticking to the "top" sites. The fact that they're popular with the largest audiences doesn't mean they're popular with YOUR audience. I'm not saying they're not right for your company specifically, but that people should just take that approach looking at general numbers.

For example, you're selling something arts & crafts related, you're likely going to be far better off spending time in the niche crafts networks (and there are plenty), even if overall user counts are lower. The same would be true if you were targeting musicians for example. Yes, Myspace is still a great place to reach them. But rather than thinking you have to go with Myspace, LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, etc., you'd be better off choosing only one or two of them most relevant to your business, and then looking for those smaller niche outlets.

There's nothing really difficult about social media marketing. It's just that people see something new and feel intimidated. Don't. It's still just good old fashioned marketing and PR. You're simply using new tools.

As a small business owner, it's stress enough to see our economy in a recession, but now have to understand how to market your e-store in the so call 'Social Network'. I admit I have some technie in me but try to understand which social sites should fall into your overall business strategy can be difficult.

To keep is simple, just stiick with the top 5 and even that may be too much as it take lots of time just to keep up.
