I need to find out who would be the best doctor in the midwest for lower back pain surgeries. I am assuming the best neurosurgeon. I really need some help after 3 back surgeries, on failed fusion with nerve damage and pain regulation with stimulator device. This is my new year's resolution-to help my son grow up instead of having him take care of me.

I have had extensive health care at Mayo and do not believe the hype about being one of the ten best in the country. I find their neurologists and cancer specialists to be especially cold and uncaring. Just an opinion.

This is a great article that provides tons of good information. I would like to share my experiences with Mayo Clinic.
I am going to write about my experiences with Mayo Clinic, it may be a little long, but, I feel, this note has some good first hand information about their system and people.
Over 15 years ago I started having extreme neck and shoulder pain. When the pain got so bad, I began to try to see what was going on with me medically. After having seeking help from 14 different neurologist and neuro-surgeons, over a tri-state area, some would say they were not sure, most told me and my family that I was making the pain up just to get drugs, I thought I would loss my mind. A friend, who had just returned from Mayo in MN, and was pleased beyond words, encouraged me to try to go to Mayo.
I went to Mayo in MN, they found I have a disease, that grows tumors and I had a tumor on my brachial plexus(in my neck and upper back area) the size of a Nerf football. The next day I had an 11 hours surgery at St.Mary’s hospital, with the Mayo Neuro-Surgeons performed the surgery. This was a very high risk surgery, the staff at the hospital stayed with my husband and disabled Mother for hours, getting updates to tell them every 15-30 minutes. When they gave the report that they had the tumor out and were sending it to Pathology, my family was beside themselves, again this lady gave them emotional support. They were told that the Pathologist would come and talk to them about what they had found out about the tumor. At that time the hospital lady took them to a special place in the hospital to be able to be in a more secluded area, so they could talk with the doctor. Within 45 minutes the Pathologist was in the room talking with them, explaining what they did and even had a cross section cut piece of the tumor, to show them and explain things, and, of course they had tested it for cancer. The report was joyous, no cancer, the doctors, nurses, and support staff were some of the nicest and most professional people I have ever met.
Mayo uses a couple of hospitals in Rochester and all of the nurses in these hospital have to have at least an R.N. Degree. This shows that they strive to have to most educated nurses and staff they can get.
Medical cost was a big worry for me. After I got well enough to travel, we headed to the deep South to our home. A week later, I started getting my medical bills. To my joy and surprise, the prices for everything listed was much less, Mayo's charges were sizably less expensive, on everything!(doctors fees, tests, hospital stays, etc.) Every doctor that I went to close to home, charged me thousands of dollars more, than what Mayo Clinic did.(And they were not even close to a correct diagnosis I could not believe that a world class medical facility fees and charges were considerably less than our local doctors and hospital! I did do a 1 to 1 comparison from one doctor I saw here in the south, put me in the hospital, did a MRI, ran numerous blood work, some other scans, etching compared the Mayo bill for the same test and the same length of stay in MN hospital. Mayo fees were less than half the cost! what is even more crazy is that none of those doctors figured out what was wrong with me! I paid for useless information!
Since this surgery, I have had to have several others surgeries and procedures do to my disease. I have gone to Mayo for all the surgeries and treatments. However, I have gone to Jacksonville, Florida for a couple of these procedures. Jacksonville, Florida has a good system and great doctors as well. My favorite between the two campus's is the Clinic in MN. Cold there, but care givers have very warm hearts!
If you feel you are ill and no doctor is helping you, please seek help from the top Doc’s on this list or at Mayo Clinic, you will not regret it and probably save you money as well! Take care and God Bless All!!

@ Joe - We appreciate your question. We bring you the results of surveys to make you aware of the good medical facilities. However, we are not authorized to advice you on the medical facility to use. Your physician could help you with that.

The data used for ranking of the the surveys should definitely be included.

I'd be most interested in:

1) infection rates

2) diagnosis made while under the hospital's care (inpatient treatment or
outpatient encounters).

3) lifespans, post-surgery, or after chemotherapy or radiation treatments.
(This should be obtainable from various longitudinal studies, etc.)

4) JCAHO accreditation results.
