Let’s face it. No one needs an iPad. There, I said it. But I finally got one after months of deliberation and I absolutely love it. Now I need to justify the purchase so I won’t feel guilty. Hopefully I can find enough reasons in this article so you can finally go out and get yours too.

Convenience Factor

Tired of schlepping your laptop to client meetings? The iPad is a great solution. As a freelance writer and information architect, I spend a lot of time interviewing clients to try and uncover the real meat and potatoes behind new website initiatives.

Plus, after 13 years of schlepping various laptops around the country my back is pretty sore. My chiropractor suggested I lighten my load, and the iPad was the answer. It is so easy now to take notes and check email from an iPad instead of dealing with the bulkiness of a heavy laptop.

Technology Factor

If you do any kind of technology-related work such as mobile IT support, application or web design, the iPad makes a great test environment for you to experiment with your latest projects. After all, you’ll need to see how your creations look and behave on alternative devices. You’ll also be more accessible to all of your help desk fans.

Apps For Writing

Like it or not, Microsoft Word owns the writing business. If you’re a writer, that means your clients probably want their documents delivered as Word files. Luckily iPad has lots of apps for writers.

I prefer the simplicity of writing my initial drafts in a standard text file like the one I’m using now called Elements. It’s a simple text editor integrated with Dropbox, so I can work on text documents on any device, wherever I am. When I’m done, it’s an easy copy/paste into Word, WordPress, Pages or whatever the final client destination happens to be. This makes it super easy to work anywhere with an Internet connection – waiting in the school parking lot, at the local coffee shop, or in your back yard.

Apps For Designers

If you do any type of design work there are plenty of iPad apps for that. My favorite so far is Adobe Ideas, a free application that lets me sketch ideas out quickly in a multitude of colors and line widths. Another app I love for web design is iMockups, which is an excellent tool for creating quick website mockups on the fly.

Fun Factor

And then of course there’s the fun factor. The whole reason I started my freelance business was so I could spend more time with my family, and everyone loves playing games on the iPad. My husband also loves looking up gourmet recipes and I enjoy reading my favorite books and blogs during downtime.

Wrap-up

Apple’s tablet computer has sparked the imagination of millions of customers and developers with a truly useful and usable product. So maybe you do need an iPad after all and just didn’t know until now. Let us know in the comments.

Shopping. On one hand I’m not your stereotypical female with a shopping obsession. I don’t enjoy spending time at malls for example. On the other hand, I love holiday shopping! There’s something about being on a quest to find the perfect gifts for all of my friends and family that I simply can’t get enough of.

Credit: BigStockPhoto.com

I used to put off holiday shopping until as close to Christmas as possible. I loved the hustle and bustle of it for that one brief period during the year. But I realized something more recently. While I enjoyed it in the moment, getting caught up in that holiday buzz was really stressing me out! So I changed my plan last year and did my shopping early. In fact, I was finished with all of my necessary gift shopping by Black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving here in the U.S.). That used to be the day I started.

I loved the change so much that I plan to do it again this year (or close to it). Combine that with a bit of retail knowledge from my younger years (for a while after school I actually worked in an area of retail marketing), and I have some tips and benefits to share with those of you who might be super-early holiday shoppers in the making.

Early Holiday Shopping: Tips and Benefits

You can find better deals on staples and casual gifts. — It’s a common misconception that the best deals come around the holidays. You can almost always find a better deal at different times of the year. For example, you might find a better deal on a laptop for your child during the back to school shopping period than the holidays (when more limited models seem to be priced with deep discounts). You can stock up on standard gifts like candles (for co-workers or a child’s teacher perhaps) at any time of the year.

You get to take advantage of clearance seasons. — Here’s another tip related to saving money by shopping early. While different retailers will have their clearance events at slightly different times, February and July are usually the big clearance months. These are the times when stores are clearing out inventory to make room for next season’s products. You can save on anything from clothing (choose basics if you buy early since trends can change quickly) to toys and games or even home appliances and electronics.

Early holiday shopping can help you avoid debt. — Many people go into debt over holiday shopping, putting gifts on their credit cards. Then it takes months to pay off the balances — often at a high interest rate. Don’t be one of those people. Shopping for holiday gifts early allows you to spread out your shopping over the year so you don’t have a huge expense hitting you all at once when the holidays roll around.

Credit: BigStockPhoto.com

Shopping early for gifts can save you stress. — I didn’t realize how stressful the holidays had become for years. And I know I’m not the only one. They can cause burn out if you aren’t careful. While the fun and anticipation and general excitement can be a good kind of stress, it’s still stress. Now I know I can have even more fun by getting the shopping out of the way early — no last minute wrapping, no fights for parking spots. Instead I’m left with more time to decorate, bake cookies, watch my favorite holiday films, and visit friends and family. And when family members complain about the hassle of shopping, I get to sit back and reminisce about what that felt like without having to join them in reliving it year after year.

What about you? Do you finish your holiday shopping early, or are you a last minute type of shopper? Do you have other tips on finding great deals on gifts by shopping early? Is it something you’d like to try? Leave a comment and tell us about it.

It has everything: low prices, huge variety of products types and manufactures, discounts and sales.

Therefore in preparation for the huge shopping season it may be a wise idea to learn to make the most of Amazon: find best tools to be able to brainstorm awesome gift ideas as well as save time and money.

Here are the 10 most useful Amazon addons for FireFox – if you are aware of any more, please comment!

1. Official Amazon Addon

The obvious way to start the list of Amazon FireFox addons is to list the official one. Add to Amazon Wish List is a nice tool that allows you to:

Quickly add any item from any website to your Amazon Wish List (it pre-fills the product details like name and pricing);

Easily access the search feature to look for Amazon customer reviews and discussions, products, Wish Lists and registries, and more

2. Amazon Search + Suggestions

This addon is one of the most usable and clutter-free out there: it installs a nice search field in your browser toolbar and enhances Amazon search with suggestions:

Besides, it provides a quick and easy way to change the target country you search in!

3. Track Prices

Do you want to buy something but waiting for the possible price drop? Price Drop is a shopping companion for Amazon: it adds a link to each product on Amazon offering you to track its price. If you enable tracking, you’ll get a notification if its price drops.

Addon Features:

Track Amazon products with one click of a mouse.

Check out your tracked product list you are tracking: click the drop icon, or the Tools->PriceDrop menu.

4. eBay Spy

eBay Spy is the fastest way and the most fun way to compare Amazon and eBay prices. Just launch it any time you on any product page at Amazon and see the related deals at eBay!

5. The Camelizer

The Camelizer provides graphs of price changes over time of Amazon products. The chart loads when you view a product, appears on top of the page and is toggle-able (so it doesn’t get in your way).

The Camelizer also places a Track Product button on the product pages so that you can create a price watch on our site. These are used to receive alerts when prices drop on products you want, and you can receive these alerts via email, Twitter, and/or RSS feed.

6. Amazon Button

This can be the great Amazon navigation assistant! The Amazon Button lets you:

Easily navigate popular amazon destinations (Sign in, My Cart, My Account)

Visually Browse best sellers/most gifted items (Best sellers, Most Gifted Items, Shakers and Movers)

Customize Menu Items (User can add up to three custom menu items)

Search Amazon using context menu (In the browser, highlight any text, right click, and choose “Search Amazon for ….”)

Custom Button Destination (User can customize the destination of the “main button” itself)

7. Amazon Sidebar Discount Search

This addon is by far the most fun way to find discounts in any category. Not sure what exactly you want to buy but feel like shopping today? Just choose the category and specify the discount amount. Optionally you can specify:

Keywords,

Min / Max price;

Shipping options and promos;

Sorting options:

8. Does Amazon Ship to …?

Does Amazon Ship to …? – this simply awesome addon lets you quickly check if the item can be shipped to your country or region.

9. PictureFox

PictureFox is Amazon product image gallery enhancer. It makes accessing and viewing high-resolution images easier and more fun:

High resolution pictures: no more “Zoom-Viewer” with ridiculous small viewing window. View high definition pictures (up to 6 Mega-Pixels) on many products without viewing restrictions!

All customer pictures in one fast gallery. No endless click-throughs!

Display of a larger preview image while hovering a product link / image.

10. Amazon Assist

AmazonAssist is another official amazon addon that follows you around the web and connects you to Amazon whereever you are. It searches Amazon.com as you search the web and delivers product information to your browser when you need it. With it you can access product details, ratings and latest prices from anywhere on the web.

It displays the related results at the bottom of your browser. Hover over any of them to see the product details. For “Dell” search, for example, we get the list of Dell laptops with the price details:

Anything else to add to the list? Let’s make the collection better!

Its rise has been overwhelming: number of Internet shoppers has been up 40% in 2 years.

Almost everyone uses Internet to do shopping research (if not buy) online.

However, naturally, (like with “traditional shopping) it varies for different people.

Shopping online is fun for some people and the unexplored area for others.

So what type of an online shopper are you? Can you tell?

First, please take the following quiz and then we’ll see who is who!

Your strong point: Shopping online is new to you but learning new things is so much fun!

Your weak point: You are vulnerable because you are an inexperienced new surfer. You may fall prey to sales tricks and scams. Do your homework before actual;;y buying anything!

How can online retailers appeal to you? Clearly built, small retailer’s site is the best start for you. It is easier to figure them and easier to make a purchase.

Shopping Skeptic

Your strong point: You are never scammed or ripped! You never waste money on things you don’t need. You are frugal and savvy!

Your weak point: You can miss out on good opportunities due to the fact that you are too careful. Taking risks may be both fun and useful sometimes!

How can online retailers appeal to you? Huge stamps belonging to trusted authorization service, privacy and security policies may make the Skeptic trust the ecommerce site.

Shopping Geek

Your weak point: Maybe, you just spend too much time learning and trying all those new wicked geeky shopping tools…

How can online retailers appeal to you? Some fun interface features (like sliders and complex search filters) may make you want to play at the site and ultimately buy something!

It’s no secret that you can buy pretty much anything online these days.

But while you’ve learned to turn to Amazon for books and check eBay instead of heading to the flea market to spend your antiques allowance, there are a few things you’re still stubbornly picking up at your local drugstore.

Join the 21st century, save money and find out what you aren’t buying online but should be.

What: Car tires

Why Buy Online: It seems counterintuitive, but there’s no reason to spend all day in a smelly tire shop to get new wheels. National stores like Discount Tire or Tire Rack actually have websites where you can enter the make/model of your vehicle (and a few other details) and get a huge list of all the tires available in your area. This system lets you compare warranties, view ratings and prices, read reviews and — most importantly — take time to consider your options, far away from the icy stare of the mechanic at the checkout counter who wants to go home for the day. Simply choose and pay for your tires, then book an appointment to have them installed whenever it’s convenient for you.

What: Photos

Why Buy Online: You’ve finally set aside the time to go through several gigabytes of digital snapshots, and now you want something to hang on the wall. Instead of driving to the local photo place with your CDs in tow, why not upload your pics from home, edit and crop them ’til your heart’s content, then cruise by to pick them up on your way to dinner? Most people don’t realize that discount stores actually have super printers that spit out some of the best-quality photos around, giving you proof-positive that the baby looks more like your side of the family without forcing you to shell out for premium prints.

What: Makeup

Why Buy Online: You may be used to stopping by the drugstore to restock your supply of mascara, but online beauty product retailers keep you from paying convenience store prices for your war paint. Since you already know what brands and shades you like, there’s no need to try them on — and this way you can get free shipping your purchases, as well as tons of free samples. Big online retailers also have the flexibility to let you return products if they turn out to be the wrong shade (even if they’re used).

What: Gift cards

Why Buy Online: It’s easy enough to pick up a gift card for your niece’s birthday, but ordering online makes the most practical present in the world (a.k.a., free money) more personal by letting you customize the design on your card, or even upload your own images to display. Plus, you don’t always have to pay full value. Sites like Offers.com use gift card coupons and deals to get you extra discounts (i.e., you pay $65 for a $75 card) and send the cards directly to your recipients, in case you can’t make it in time.

What: Shoes

Why Buy Online: In case you haven’t heard, online retailers like Zappos and Road Runner Sports have revolutionized the footwear business by all but opening a shoe store in your bedroom. With free shipping both ways (some of the fastest shipping we’ve seen anywhere, incidentally) and a 60-day guarantee that lets you wear your pairs for up to 2 months and still send them back if you want to, it’s better than a brick-and-mortar shoe store any day.

Stop wasting money, and start saving by shopping online for these 5 items.

Shopping has got more fun since it became possible to shop online. But how many awesome tools are you still unaware of?

And even if you are using some web application daily, has it ever occurred to you that you can use this tool for shopping (and saving)?

Today’s post is a great example of how technology may come in handy when it comes to creating a smart shopping strategy: use Gmail filters to shop and save!

General Guidelines:

In the course of these guidelines you will need to know the following:

What is a label in Gmail? Consider it a virtual folder: the way to organize your in coming mail by topic, sender, etc.

How do I create a folder? Go: Settings -> Labels; scroll down to the bottom of the page, provide the label name and click “Create”

What is a filter in Gmail? A filter is simple way to automatically manage your messages by providing a set of rules.

Where do I create a filter? Go: Settings -> Filters and click “Create a new filter”

Shopping and saving filters examples:

1. Automatically store updates from your favorite online stores in a separate folder:

If you have bought something from some online store, you are most likely to be subscribed to their mailing lists – which means you will be receiving updates on new special offers and coupons. You may want to keep these updates in a separate folder to have them stored in one place (it’s like coupon clipping but no effort needed).

Step 1: Create a label and name it something like “Favorite store”

Step 2: Set up a filter to direct all the messages from the store to that folder:

To create one filter for multiple stores use OR operator: (support@amazon.com OR support@ebay.com OR support@barnesandnoble.com)

If you are unsure which exactly email address the message will come from, use * (wildcard operator) before the domain: (*@amazon.com OR *@ebay.com OR *@barnesandnoble.com)

2. Send yourself reminders not to forget to buy something

You can create a separate folder to store all your “TO-BUY” reminders and send yourself email messages to be stored in that folder. Remember that you can access it from anywhere to see what else you need to buy.

Step 1: Create a label called “TO-BUY”

Step 3: Create a filter to store all messages FROM:me TO:me in your TO-BUY folder. Quick tips:

Automatically star all these messages. In this case you will be able to unstar then once you make the purchase;

“Skip the inbox” for those reminders not to stuck in your inbox:

Now, whenever you want to remember to buy anything, send yourself a message containing TO BUY: in the subject:

3. Set up SMS alerts for urgent emails

If, for example, you are monitoring any product price until it drops or waiting for some great stuff to appear in stock, you may want to create an SMS alert once it happens.

Step 1: Get free email to SMS gateway for your mobile carrier.

Step 2: Create a filter for that time-sensitive alert. Like in step 1, you may filter the email address of the alerting tool you are using (e.g. *@pricegrabber.com).

Step 3: Setup a Forward rule to your free email-to-sms number (you found it in Step 1):

Once you receive email alert from that tracking service you are using you’ll also get SMS message with about first 150 characters of the email. How awesome is that?

Easter baskets generally fill the shelves at your local grocery stores and malls this time of year. But if you prefer to make your own basket of gifts for your kids, you might need a little help searching for the right toys, candy and other objects to add. Here is a list of 10 new ideas for your kid’s Easter basket gifts.

Ideas for Young Kids

Bowling Bunnies: The soft bunnies in the Bowling Bunnies set available at Fat Brain Toys serve as your child’s bowling pins. What do they use to knock them down? Why a soft, plush cabbage of course! This game is fun, safe for children and won’t result in broken toys when played inside.

Cozy Bunny Blanket: Instead of choosing between a stuffed bunny and a soft blanket for your little one’s Easter basket, why not choose a bunny and a blanket all-in-one? This super-soft, super-cute satin and fleece blanket with bunny personality from Red Envelope has the body of a blanket with the head, arms and legs of a stuffed bunny.

Ideas for Teens

White Rabbit “You’re Late” Tee: Hot Topic is a favorite store of many teens and they have a white rabbit Alice in Wonderland tee shirt that your teenage daughter might actually want to wear out of the house. The tee shirt features a picture of the rabbit along with the words, “You’re Late” which, in the case of most teens, is probably true.

munki bunnyz by StarMonkey

BuNnY MoNsTeRz: For the angsty, funny and alternative teen in your life comes a stuffed animal they can identify with and love. BuNnY MoNsTeRz and their cousins the munki bunnyz (pictured) are demented but cute, irreverent bunny-like stuffed animals, hand-made by Etsy seller StarMonkey. They range in size from about 8 to 10 inches tall and are created with an assortment of interesting fabrics and buttons.

Cymbal Playing Bunny: The Cymbal Playing Bunny is a take on the old cymbal playing monkey which has been ruined thanks to its frequent appearance in scary movies. But there is nothing scary about Uncommon Good’s Cymbal Playing Bunny who, when wound up, happily crashes his cymbals together. It’s a great way to remind your teen of their childhood with a collectible figure.

The Incredible Expanding Bunny: The Incredible Expanding Bunny is a fun optical illusion that will keep your kids and their friends interested for weeks as they try to figure out how the bunny seems to grow as the wheel spins.

Ideas for Candy

12.5″ Tall Chocolate Bunny: There will be no run-of-the-mill chocolate bunny for your kids this year. Instead, they can have a chocolate bunny with ears so long it measures over one foot tall. Get ready for an extreme sugar high!

Bacon Jelly Beans: Sure, jelly beans should be a part of every Easter basket, but you don’t have to go with traditional jelly beans. Instead, you can opt for ThinkGeek’s bacon-flavored jelly beans in the special bacon-shaped tin. They’re like breakfast and dessert in one not-so-sweet treat.

Ideas for the Whole Family

Bunny Slippers: Who wouldn’t love to hop around all day in some warm, soft bunny slippers? Bunnyslippers.com has bunny-headed slippers in a range of sizes. They even have killer rabbit slippers for the Monty Python fan in your family.

Bunny Sponsorship: Often during Easter, families rush out to the nearest pet store and buy their children sweet little bunny rabbits. Unfortunately for the bunnies, most families find their children unable to handle the responsibility of rabbit care and many of these pets end up in shelters. This year, instead of buying the bunny, why not just sponsor one of the needy and recovering bunnies at an animal shelter like Best Friends Animal Shelter?

Today’s consumer is smarter than ever before. With the mercurial nature of this economy, everyone is on the lookout for the best deals around. Thankfully, there are several websites that make it easy to get a bargain. With these 9 website for bargain hunters, you can feel confident that you’re getting the best deal with just a few short minutes of shopping.

Woot—The concept of Woot is simple: One great deal each day. These deals are typically for electronics, but there are other Woot websites where you can find daily deals on wine, T-shirts, and other products.

Overstock—The leader and most well-recognized bargain website, Overstock.com offers great savings by selling brand-name products at discount products. The website is able to provide these great deals because they sell excess inventory from other retailers. It’s kind of like the online version of Ross, Marshalls, or TJ Maxx.

CurrentCodes—Many online retail websites offer the option of entering a discount code in the shopping cart during checkout. CurrentCodes.com is your one-stop shop for all the latest coupon codes from retailers such as Barnes & Noble, 1-800-FLOWERS, American Eagle, Staples, and more. Always check this website before making your purchase online.

Shnoop—Okay, so Shnoop is basically a Woot knockoff, but it still usually publishes a worthwhile deal each day. I recommend subscribing to the RSS feed so that you’re alerted of each day’s new deal as these offers are obviously time sensitive.

Dealitem—At Dealitem.com, new coupons and deals are added to the website each hour. Dealitem.com makes it easy to search for the best deals and to compare prices. You can also submit deals and coupon codes that you’ve come across.

Tips for success:

Subscribe to the RSS feeds of these websites to get the latest alerts as many deals expire quickly

If you know what you’re looking for, use the search feature and price comparison features to save time on finding the best deal

Pay attention to the details of the deals as sometimes the products are refurbished

Are there any great deal-finding websites you would add to this list? Leave a comment with your favorites.
