Deterioration of your eyesight is a serious thing and can lead to many problems for you. This is why it’s important to visit your eye doctor at least once a year. If you can’t remember the last time you had your eyesight checked out, you should definitely make an appointment to do so as soon as possible. The sooner you catch a problem with your eyes, the faster this problem can be fixed, and the less strain you will be putting on your eyesight over time. Failing to get a checkup from a certified ophthalmologist on an annual basis can make your eyes even worse and cause you even more trouble and lost time in the end. If there is something wrong with your eyes, or your vision is not as good as it could be, your eye doctor will be able to treat you and give you advice on how to care for your eyes and keep them functioning and healthy.

These are 5 sure signs you need to visit your eye doctor:

1. You squint or strain eyes to see things clearly— Some people don’t even realize they’re doing it, but squinting your eyes to see the TV, street signs, or anything else off in the distance is a great indicator your eyesight may be declining. While it may not bother you to begin with, squinting your eyes actually puts a strain on them over time and can cause even more damage if not taken care of. To aid your vision, your eye doctor will most likely suggest you get glasses or contacts. Lasik eye surgery is even available for a permanent fix.

2. You have trouble reading or seeing things up close— Although you may not have trouble seeing far away, it’s also possible to have problems seeing things held close to your eyes. One main sign of farsightedness is if you constantly have to adjust the distance between your eyes and something you’re reading. This can put just as much strain on your eyes as having to squint to see things far away. Similarly, glasses or contacts will most likely be recommended.

3. Your eyes itch or burn— Itching or burning eyes is a definite sign that a trip to the eye doctor needs to happen ASAP. Your discomfort could derive from high levels of pollen or other allergies, but it could also be something serious. Rather than waiting to see if things worsen, it’s best to make an appointment as soon as you can. Doing so could save your eyesight.

 4. You experience pain or sensitivity— Any pain or sensitivity, whether it comes from direct contact, bright lights, or an unknown source, is abnormal and should be dealt with immediately.

5. It’s time for your annual— Even if you feel as if nothing is wrong with your eyes, it’s still good to visit your ophthalmologist once a year on a regular basis. This way, you will be able to prevent any possible eyesight problems before they even happen.

Do any of these 5 warning signs apply to you? If so, make an appointment with an eye doctor as soon as possible!

  • i understand that our eyes are very sensitive. i’ve read in this sub that some guy got a serious eye condition from a bottle cap hitting his eye when opening it or something along those lines.

so i would like to ask, what kind of injuries/accidents are actually serious or worth having it looked at just in case? i guess that accidentally brushing one’s eye with something or hitting it with your glasses or stuff like that isn’t. what’s the “limit” our eyes can handle?
