Most Dangerous Roads In The World.

Update: Please also check the second part of Most Dangerous Roads in the World

It’s hard to imagine how many dangerous roads there are. When working on this post I studied about 10 resources to find out that there are over 50 dangerous and scary roads and these are just the most famous we’ve heard of. There are different factors of danger so it’s really hard to say what roads are the most dangerous of all the dangerous roads in the world.

In our post today you will see the roads that are considered the most dangerous and that caught my attention because of the fact that the roads shouldn’t naturally be in those places. What I mean here is that it looks like the Nature has created the borders that shouldn’t be crossed using huge rocks, steep slopes, stones, volcanoes but the human beings were so stubborn that they finally erected the roads and trails, but what we still can’t do is ensure the safety. There’s always the risk that something will happen but the risk has never stopped the human yet.

The North Yungas Road (Road of Death), Bolivia

North Yungas Road also known as the Road of Death is considered the most dangerous road in the world. It stretches for about 40 mountain-hugging miles and is only 10 feet wide.

Pan American Highway

The Pan American Highway is a network of roads stretching for nearly about 30,000 miles from Alaska to the lower reaches of South America. This is the world’s longest “motorable road,” according to Guinness World Records. Some roads are widely knows by narrow curves, steep cliffs, flash floods and landslides.

Coastal Roads, Croatia

Compared to the other roads from our post, the coastal roads of Croatia may look childish, but that’s not the case. The coastal roads and the fast-driving Croats that crowd them probably account for more deaths and injuries than accidents associated with unexploded ordinance ever do.

Guoliang Tunnel in Taihang mountains (China)

The name of the tunnel translates from Chinese as the “Road that does not tolerate any mistakes”. First the tunnel was created by the villagers from the remote area of the Taihang Mountains to get a way out to the outside world. Presently the road is 15 feet high and 12 feet wide which is pretty scary for the drivers. The tunnel has 30 windows to enjoy the scenes.

Skippers Canyon, New Zealand

The Canyon road is carved from schist rock and travels through some of the most spectacular scenery in the New Zealand. That’s a narrow and unsealed road about 22 km long. Rental car companies warn clients not to take their cars on this dramatic and at times terrifying road which branches off the Coronet Peak ski field road.

  • Thanks for such informative posts. I suggest, u should also include the roads of Nepal, a tiny mountaineering country of south asia. Thanks

  • All road is very dangrous but most dangerous road in China which is Tunnul Road plz drive slowly and safly.

  • The indian highways have not been included. There are narrow roads cut into mountains, much like China. However, there is two way traffic on these roads, and the road claims 30 deaths per year.

  • As someone already said, Grimselpass is not a dangerous road.
It’s always at least 4.5 m wide (that’s 2 cars + 50 cm). Road surface is perfect and well maintained (this is Switzerland!), there are places to enjoy the view, hotels / restaurants.
This is a road for normal tourists, not risk takers because there isn’t much risk, as long as you drive properly (never quicker than you can see, behind curves, etc.)

I know other roads in Switzerland that are REALLY dangerous, and the most-known “Pässe” (Grimselpass, Furkapass, Sustenpass, …) don’t go in that list.

  • I traveled the length of Skippers road by motor bike in 1960. I was young and crazy then. Perhaps Skippers has improved since then but it was pretty tough going at that time. I just made it back from where I started when my lights failed. I was told I was insane to do it but it was worth it!

  • These roads are dangerous in the sense that they’re high or steep. But not in terms of actual fatalities. These roads don’t see much traffic so in the sense of fatalities they’re pretty tame.

  • Most of the fatal accidents are due to speed and recklessness, not only due to the roads themselves. That being said, you really have to be carefull and go slow on these, wow scary to just look at. If you had a good 4×4 you can take these roads, just go slow, put your lights on and say a prayer to your gods and you will be alright, (but scared)

  • there is no dangerous roads and hi-ways if we are all alert and patient drivers. if only one who took care of driving and the other’s doen’t, then it is no use…. so pls…. always, ingat! take care!

  • oh my God I want to see if this pictures are all real because its to hard to build a way in that kind of place. I am always thinking how did they made it! especially in the top of the mountain its to scary and cold!

  • omg i want to walk than to have a ride in that kind of creepy way but it makes me amaze to see a very dangerous kind of place because if you try to pass. its like you pass your death and i want to have that kind of experience.

  • Thanks for your comment, but I don’t think I’ve ever mentioned that these and only these roads are most dangerous. I’ve explained why I have chosen these ones in the very beginning of the post
    Thanks

  • Thanks for bring us such a dangerous road across the world which is very very scare to watch also

  • I think if they think reconsider this…… they must see road between Tezpur & Tawang (INDIA) . even they see in google maps i am quiet sure your idea will change about the roads i.e about the dangerous road to drive on

  • While featuring world most dangerous roads you have forgotten to mention few roads of Uttrakhand hills in India. Road to Tiuni from Haripur via Icchadi dam is extremely dangerous and highly accident prone.

  • They are beautiful.I would love to ride them all on my bike if I only had a sponsor. BMW I have had 5-6 of your bikes going back to 65. How about this for an ad. I will ride all the roads on my first BMW an R69s with Earls front forks and do it again on my 2012 R1200GS or a NEW 1014 1200 GS maybe a 600 or 800 GS for comparison. Step up to the plate and lets show the world what a 58 year old man with abou8 damaged discs and spinal injuries can do. Note: No injuries were from riding. Everyday new youngsters will take bikes and do the longest wheelies on the front or rear wheel. But your buyer is 40 plus and stays loyal to the brand. They also rack up miles of touring though out the world, they do not ride a quarter mile at a time. You sponsor and I will ride anywhere in the world you can reach me at my email or Max BMW, Troy NY USA

  • Its amazing photos I will wish to tour one of them one day should I get a sponsor for travel expenses.Wonderfull man made bridges and roads.Bravo for roads engineers and constructions works.
