Top Ways to Get Positive Attention at Work

Assuming you aren’t like Peter Gibbons in Office Space whose only concern is doing just enough to get by at work, you probably have career goals you’d like to achieve. But sometimes, figuring out how to reach those goals can be challenging.

It all starts with getting noticed at work. By implementing these simple tactics, you can start getting positive attention at work, putting you on the fast track to advancing your career.

• Always be early—A guy I used to work always said “If you’re early, you’re on time. If you’re on time, you’re late.” If you want to stand out at work, don’t be the guy (or girl) who comes running it at the last possible second every single day. People who do that show that they aren’t really dedicated to doing a great job, but instead are only concerned with just being there and doing the bare minimum to get by.

Now, that’s not to say that you need to be putting in 12 hour days every day. That’s overkill. But showing up 10-15 minutes early to get a jump start on the day is sure to eventually get your boss’ attention, making you appear to be the committed employee who puts in the extra effort to help the company succeed.

• Don’t make the boss ask you to do your job—There’s nothing a boss hates more than constantly having to monitor an employee to make sure he’s doing his job. Bosses want proactive, responsible employees who they can trust to get their work done without constantly being prodded. Be that employee…the one who always stays on task and gets work completed quickly and accurately.

• Don’t complain—This alone will probably set you apart from at least half of the other employees. It seems like everyone is a complainer these days. Employees complain about the boss, their pay, their assignments, their benefits, and anything else they can think of. This causes them to become bitter, leading them to be less productive and less interested in helping the company.

Never be seen complaining at work. If you really need to get something off your chest, wait until you get home and complain about it to someone else. Always keep a positive attitude at work. Be a team player, and never showcase any negative attitudes or behaviors.

• Further your training—Show your boss that you’re committed to becoming the best possible employee by furthering your training whenever possible. Don’t just rely on in-house training opportunities either. Attend seminars, conferences, and classes on your own whenever possible. Get advanced certifications specific to your industry, and take some time to read books and blogs related to your industry. All of these things will show your boss that you’re constantly bettering yourself, making you a valuable asset that the company can’t ignore.

• Be visible—Don’t hide behind the walls of your cubicle all day long. Spend some time getting around the office, making yourself visible to everyone there. You can do this first thing in the morning when you grab a cup of coffee. Walk around with your coffee saying “Good morning”, seeing what everyone else it up to, and asking if there’s anything you can help with. This makes everyone aware of your presence, and it helps you build relationships with key decision makers in your office.
