Who is a good leader according to you? What are the qualities that make a good leader stand out in the crowd and mesmerize you with finesse in everything he or she does?

Is it enough to have a dynamic personality and be able to stand out in the crowd or handle situations most efficiently? Is it enough to have good management skills and effective listening ability?

Experts say no!

They are of the opinion that while all these qualities are needed for a leader; it is the feeling of empathy towards colleagues and employees that makes a successful leader, and ultimately leads the company towards success.

Many of us hate our boss even if that person has the capacity to handle things most efficiently. There is a reason behind that. Simply handling the responsibilities efficiently does not make an effective leader. Leadership is a skill that very few people can claim to possess.

Let’s see what empathy actually means. Empathy is the ability to understand other people’s feelings and their needs. A business where empathy is widespread is always successful.

There are companies that see empathy as a form of weakness. This is evident in the example of Albert John Dunlap, who enjoyed the title of “Chainsaw Al,” that was given to him as he would not think twice before firing any number of employees. Although, he was initially thought to be the perfect CEO, eventually he was found guilty of fraud. This shows that such people with a cold heart can also be selfish and short sighted.

Effective leaders are people who can take tough decisions when situations warrant, but they also have the heart to communicate with employees on a personal level and understand what is going on inside them. In a bad situation, it is the quality of empathy that distinguishes a good leader from a great leader.

Today, empathy has been recognized as a must-have attribute for a leader in order to be successful and also help an organization achieve its vision.

Can this quality be developed?

According to experts, empathy is built on three behaviors:

- Understanding and accepting self limitations

- Listening to others and learning about their personal lives and challenges

- Looking at leadership as a noble ideal

To ensure an organization adopts widespread empathy, it is essential to leave the office and get outside. Go to places where people are most likely to be themselves. It is also important to be genuinely concerned and interested in people. Pretences are not going to last long and will not serve the purpose. Forget about who you are and what you do. Start caring about others. Finally, ensure you bring evidences of the outside world into the office.

Here are a few pointers:

- Listen to people: Pay attention not just to their words, but the hidden emotions behind what they are saying. Do not interrupt people and make sure not to dismiss their concerns without listening to them first.

- Focus on the body language: The body language of people often communicates more than their words. It tells you what they are feeling or thinking, even if they are saying something different.

- Be present: When you are in conversation with someone, don’t do anything else. It is not right to check your mail or look at your watch or even attend a phone call. Allow them to have their moment with you.

- Smile from your heart: This has always been said to work wonders. It makes people comfortable with you and gives them the ability to get rid of any apprehensions they may have.

Gone are the days when cold bloodedness was considered to be a quality desired in a CEO or a senior executive. People have changed, their thinking has changed and they no longer want to have a boss who is a cane-whipping monster. They would rather have someone who understands them.

Experts opine that even if a person has all the excellent qualities of a smart executive, if there is lack of empathy, the journey towards success is going to be short lived. Put yourself in their shoes and see how success comes after you.

Are you an effective leader in the right sense of the word?

If you’re a mother, you know the responsibilities you take upon yourself most willingly. You take care of your child and work on a job too. With the economy in doldrums, things must have gotten worse for you.

Do you have to work longer hours because of all the layoffs in your company? Are you working two jobs to make ends meet? Are you feeling burned out due to financial problems, family needs and busy schedules?

I wouldn’t be surprised if you say yes to all of the above. Who said a mother’s role in the current day was easy?

With most companies being affected by the economic gloom, working mothers are feeling the pressure of having to do the jobs left behind by their laid off colleagues, of having to complete their own jobs to perfection and of having to take care of their family. A mother’s heart never compromises on the time spent at home with the family, but the fear of losing their jobs is making them take on more than they can handle.

But a survey found that there are a large percentage of women who manage to do everything with great aplomb. They manage their time so well, that it could be a great lesson in time management. It makes you wonder how they do it all with days not getting any longer.

These women consider time as the most precious gift and they make best use of it, to be able to balance their home and work responsibilities.

Although, there are no fixed things one needs to do to maintain a balance between work and family, there are a few things these time experts follow, to manage all aspects of their lives perfectly.

If you are a mother who’s having a hard time managing time, look at what others suggest you do:

Relieving stress

Many working women who are able to keep up with the pressures of work and home, and stay happy even with all the running around say they take time out for themselves and indulge in their favorite activities to relieve stress. They block off some time as an appointment on a calendar weekly and follow through on that without fail. You can do this as it helps you take on whatever comes your way during the week and stay motivated.

Maintaining timings and flexible working hours

Manage time by completing tasks by the appointed hour so that you can leave for home. Women must be assertive with their bosses so that your boss does not get used to making demands just when you are above to leave. Tell your boss politely but firmly that the day’s work is over and you would be pleased to complete the remaining tasks the next morning. Once in a while, an exception can be made in case of an emergency, but never make it a habit. Many working women say they manage to get flexible work hours by talking to their bosses and impressing upon them the importance of balancing work and personal life, so that they can give the best to the company. For example, you may ask for flexible hours to arrive a little earlier than the usual working hours and leave earlier).

Sharing responsibilities at home

It is important to divide household responsibilities; such as bill paying, chores, dinner preparation and other work between you and your family members so that every member of the household is involved. You can share responsibilities with your partner so that none of you is over-burdened with all the chores and doing things together will also let you enjoy quality time together, which otherwise may not be possible. Good communication between couples helps each spouse understand the other partner’s feelings and roles. There are not hard and fast rules in a loving environment, just the respect to lessen the other’s responsibilities. Seeing their parents share everything with mutual respect motivates children to do their bit.

Separating personal life from professional

It is not easy for mothers to shift from the role of a professional to that of a mother each and every day. Whatever your work situation and worries, do not bring them home to the kids. Your family needs your undivided attention at least during the few hours you spend with them. It is important to learn to compartmentalize your roles and get completely involved with the kids and your partner when at home. Similarly, be professional enough not to carry your personal life to work. Many women use commuting to their advantage. During the time it takes to get back home from work, they shift gears and make plans for their responsibilities at home. This helps in being in a better frame of mind by the time they reach home. There are others who use this time to relax by reading a book or doing something that takes them away from their demands at home or work.

Lightening the work load

Many working women feel they are capable of doing a lot and take on more than they can handle. If you have staff under you, then learn to delegate and get them used to the fact that you may not be available for every meeting. Once your staff learns to do their jobs perfectly, your stress will be reduced.

The modern educated working woman things she can multitask and do everything for everybody, but this is not the case. No woman can be a super being, she is human after all. In order to provide the best to loved ones and to do justice at work, management of time is extremely crucial. When thousands of working moms all over the world are managing their time most efficiently and leading balanced lives, there is no reason why you as a mom, cannot.

An increasing number of organizations, both big and small, are showering much attention on ex-army officers. Their aim is to achieve efficiency in end results that will help with the growth of their companies.

They intend to do so by taking advantage of the high level of discipline and approach of the defense personnel, in the form of training sessions conducted by these officers for the employees.

It is a well-known fact that these army officers are a totally different breed with their commitment and discipline being way ahead from normal civilians. These people have lived through the most difficult situations, faced adversities and learnt to fight every battle only to win.

Ex-servicemen bring with them a rich experience that is a result of their long years in the army. They are disciplined, methodical; follow the book and employees gain tremendously from training under people with such wonderful qualities.

Corporate houses are getting ex-army officers to train their employees in various aspects and this trend is catching up fast. The kind of training that is taken from them includes sessions on leadership qualities, corporate security, communication skills, basic etiquette, behavioral science, importance of multi-tasking, time management, overall conduct, team work, trust, camaraderie etc.

Basically, the outlook of an army person is positive because of the tough environment in which they operate and they impart relevant messages to employees in a corporate set up.

For the organizational success, it is important for each and every employee to have the never-say-die spirit that says “can do” or “will do.” Being surrounded by people with such an attitude provides a positive effect all around. This helps employees understand the importance of team work and leadership qualities better and make a success of any team or project they are part of.

Initially, it has been seen that employees find these army offices harsh and strict, because of the set of rules and regulations they work with. However, once employees understand the importance of being dedicated to what they do and how it helps in their overall growth, the barriers are broken down and they find themselves learning and rebuilding themselves from the ground level.

How will these training sessions change employee behavior?

The advantage of such training not only helps the employees hone their professional skills, but also their personal skills, which will leave them better organized in all aspects of their lives and with the ability to deal with all kinds of situations.

Communication skills, presence of mind, ability to research, ability to take on new tasks with a positive frame of mind, quick thinking and negotiating are the areas usually focused on in the training sessions.

Human resource pundits feel that during turbulent times, it has become even more challenging to innovate ideas in order to teach new skills to the employees and keep up the motivation levels. When employees are shown how to see meaningful goals in the organization, they strive to achieve them. Since these are not the typical boring training presentations, employees find them interesting.

Today’s workplace is fraught with high amount of pressure and tall expectations. This sort of mentally rigorous and challenging training has been seen to leave behind highly motivated staff raring to go and ready to take on any challenges. Just like in war, where team playing is emphasized along with peer motivation, several organizations see the difference in their employees and reveal that after the training sessions, they become more dedicated, disciplined and committed to their work.

It is only the motivated employee that goes the extra mile in an organization, and creating a climate of freshness and motivation has become critical to any organization and the ex-army officers take on this task with aplomb.

If these training sessions are beneficial to the employees and the organizations, they are no less beneficial for the army officers who take up this training. This is a great new profession where they get to share their experiences with enthusiastic people hanging on their every word and relive their glory long after they are out of the army. The monetary benefits they enjoy for sharing their knowledge are on the higher side too.

Historically, entrepreneurship has always been male-dominated, but today things are changing for the better for women. There has been an encouraging upturn of women entrepreneurs in the past decade and some of the most influential and inspirational entrepreneurs today are women.

A recent U.S. national poll revealed the most admired entrepreneur to be…. Any guesses?

Oprah Winfrey!

Women design homes. Women run manufacturing units. Women take over firms. Women run luxury stores. Women are into internet marketing. The growing number of women entrepreneurs in every field is a clear indication of their success at business.

For those wondering why women are proving to be successful at business, experts say, it is because they know how to stretch the dollar; they start small and keep costs down and production up! Remember! They run the house too, which takes far superior entrepreneurial skills that a business does.

A surprising finding reveals that women entrepreneurs of today employ more people than the Fortune 500 combined.

What makes Oprah stand out above the rest? Her career is filled with firsts and superlatives. She managed to amass a fortune and became one of the most powerful people in the entertainment industry. It did not come easy to her but in the end, it’s not just about the money. Her philanthropic efforts and the educational and inspirational nature of her shows, it is clear that she wants to make a difference and she certainly has.

There have been others like her who stood out in the male-dominated business arena in their time. Estee Lauder made beauty big business. She was the daughter of immigrants and the embodiment of the American dream. She started out small selling skin creams that her uncle made, but with sheer determination, she made her way up by working at the cosmetics counters of department stores and created a selling style of her own. She later went on to put her brand at the very top of the beauty industry, and owned 45% of the cosmetics market in the U.S., which is no small feat.

Coco Chanel was one of the greatest women entrepreneurs of the 20th century. She changed the way fashion was looked at, creating a simple and elegant style that was her trademark. She may no longer be here, but her fragrance lingers on. Her perfume Chanel No. 5 is still one of the best-selling fragrances in the world.

There are several women entrepreneurs like them. Every day a woman leaves a corporate job to start her own business. This can also be the result of a major issue for women, that of work-life balance. In an attempt to manage family and work, many women turn to business to gain the flexibility they need, and realize soon enough that they are made for business.

Why are women naturals as entrepreneurs?

Their people skills are excellent and inborn. Women can ask the most personal questions very naturally without any inhibitions and this helps a great deal in building relationships. For any business to be a success there has to be a bond with clients and subordinates, and this is an essential skill for any entrepreneur. Women have the capability of putting people at ease and this helps them in all their dealings.

Women are great at multi-tasking. Women have always managed their jobs, home and children with aplomb. Multi-tasking comes easy for them. Before the men get upset, of course, men can multi-task too, but it seems to come much more easily for a woman to manage more than one thing at a time. An entrepreneur has to wear many hats and they are successful at it.

They don’t mind taking risks. A survey reveals that women entrepreneurs are ready to take risks. They consider risk to be their responsibility too and carry it out most creatively.

These are just a few things that make women the most admired entrepreneurs. The softness in a woman’s thinking, the kindness in her deeds, the passion with which she fulfills here familial duties, the love she showers on her children – all these qualities combine in the creation of a business woman who can handle any level of responsibility, take on any challenge and make any business a success.

Colors are everywhere and their impact on us shouldn’t be under-estimated. Our nervous system requires input and stimulation. And color choice is the best way to help it.

Colors can change our mood, make us work or feel tired – imagine, your room colors may be the reason for your bad productivity or lower creativity! The human eye sees about 7,000,000 colors.

Certain colors and color relationships can irritate, cause headaches, or make you feel sick. Other colors and color combinations are healing and soothing.

Consequently, the appropriate use of color can maximize productivity, minimize visual fatigue, and relax the whole body. Here are some basics to start from:

Color

Physical background

Feelings

Effect on productivity

Thermal / warm colors (stimulate and raise blood pressure)

Red

Red raises blood pressure, increases breathing, heart rate and central nervous system functioning

Makes people feel hungry; subconsciously symbolizes dominance

Makes people more cautious and detail-oriented; => Make people’s work more accurate

Cool colors (calm, ease inflammation, and lower blood pressure)

Blue

Blue lowers blood pressure, the pulse rate and body temperature

Least appetizing; calming

Boosts creativity

Green

Green in the center of the spectrum has a stabilizing effect on the human system as a whole.

Relieves stress, makes you calmer

Researchers have also found that green can improve reading ability

Now, just a few details to support the data listed in the table:

Red:

It may look weird that while making you more energetic and excited, this color also makes you more productive and attentive to details. This phenomenon is explained the following way:

“When you feel that the situation you are in is problematic,” said Norbert Schwarz, a psychology professor at the University of Michigan, “you are more likely to pay attention to detail, which helps you with processing tasks but interferes with creative types of things.”

Blue:

By contrast, when people are calm, balanced and in a happy mood, they are more creative and less analytic. Hence if you need to get more creative, blue is the right choice for you. Blue also suppresses appetite, so if you have bad time concentrating because of the frequent breaks for some snacks, surround yourself with blue and you will get more organized.

Compare:

Want to see for yourself, compare then: Which one looks more delicious?

and

Which one makes you more relaxed / energetic?

Starting your own business is tough. You have to think about so many things at a time that you can easily get lost. Apart from your usual professional assignments, you need to hand the whole bunch of other tasks from managing (new) co-workers to building new business connections.

The world starts going crazy… So how not to get lost? Get organized!

First, define what things keep you busy every day

Day by day, you watch your time spent nowhere and you feel you no more have any control over it. Now, sit down, grab a notebook and a pen and create a list of things you do every day. Mine is going to look something like this:

Checking email box, killing spam, replying to some messages and sorting other for later references;

Checking all your active social media accounts (Twitter replies, Facebook  inbox, StumbleUpon shares…);

Checking all recent blog posts (are there any comments outside the site itself? on Twitter, Digg, Reddit, etc);

Checking morning business news, Digg and Reddit front page, etc

Looking for some material for new blog posts, brainstorming for new post idea (lots of coffee here!)

Doing some client work, creating daily reports for   clients;

Talking to online friends and partners;

Checking my feed reader (especially those blogs which are updated daily).

Ok, going through this list, it seems I definitely need more than 24 hours a day… Ok, now let’s figure how to manage all those things and to get everything done.

Track your time

Time is much more important than money to me because time has limits while money doesn’t. Therefore I need to economize. The first step is to identify how much time each task takes me. There are plenty of paid and free tools for that (including your own watch) but I just use the simplest one:

Time Tracker is quick to register. Its most useful feature is the ability to set time tracking fir each task – for you to know how much time each task takes.

Start using time-management tools

TaDaList

TaDaList is quick and easy to register and offers sleek minimalistic interface. The best features include:

Publish your lists for everyone to see them;

Invite collaborators to create and edit lists together.

Remember The Milk

RememberTheMilk is a much more advanced than the above one productivity tool for those who are more serious about their time tracking. Its best (free) features include:

Use advanced search to look for your tasks;

Create notes to stick to any task;

Add more users to manage or watch your to-do lists;

Set time you plan to spend on any task;

Set email notifications;

Integrate it with Gmail or Google calendar.

Todoist

Todoist looks much simpler it really is. There are plenty of hidden features that really make it my favorite time-management tool:

Handy FireFox sidebar for easier and quicker access;

Multi-color projects for to-do lists visualization;

Cool format syntax;

Create labels ross referencing all your projects.

So:

Identify your task;

Measure time;

Plan your day.

And you will succeed!

Good luck!

Risk management is the merely the procedure to evaluate risk and build up strategies to handle the hazard. Considering the model of risk management, a prioritization course of action is pursued where in all the risks with the highest possible loss and the ones of the superlative probability of happening are taken care with an immediate momentum. While bringing risk management to practice, the process can be extremely intricate. And above all, the balancing between the highest risks and the lower risks can be awfully confusing as sometimes the risks with lesser probability but higher losses can be frequently bungled up.

A lot of big corporate companies formulate several risk management strategies to lend a hand in preventing monetary catastrophes and workforce hazards. Scores of social fraternities and further analogous corporations have engaged risk management procedures to help out in preventing accidents caused due to alcohol addiction. Risks are not only restricted to the alcohol addiction accidents but also include slave trade practices, intoxicated injuries and employee fights. Certain risk prevention centers employ matured drivers along the week, clear-headed festivity supervisors. Various centers across the region often come up with cells that handle assessing of the risk management policies and promote speakers to talk about the dangers of alcohol. Overall, risk management aspires to prevent and eradicate the living dangers of life.

In the times gone by, there has never been such a stress on safety and risk management in the organizations as it is in the current age and time. The primary reason behind this is the scarcity of work force all over the globe. With increasing competitiveness, it has become imperative for the companies to invest on a secure and risk free professional environment for its employees. Certain laws have been put into practice by the leading bodies to protect the rights of workers and these laws differ with regions. There are greater responsibilities on the employer than it was ever before. The laws have been formulated in such a way that it does not leave a lot of alternatives or interpretations to the hiring parties. If any of the organizations today, fail to meet the requirements or do not succeed to follow the rules most evidently lands up into huge loss of labor along with a series of lawsuits and in turn great monetary losses. The risks today can be categorized into various different sections for a general overview of the prevalent strategy.

The most important risk can be categorized as the market risk. This kind of a risk points to the probability of facing huge lows from diverse situations in the present financial asset prices. For an example – stocks and bonds. Usually the standard risk management model uses quite an advanced algorithm to forecast the losses and dissimilar price fluctuations. Other risks such as the “credit risks” and “funding risks” can also be rightly recognized as market risks in general.

The details can make or break a business. A company might have terrific technology, a firm business plan and a wonderful vision, but if the phones don’t work and you have no paper to print the powerful messages on, you’re out of luck. The small things in a business keep things running smoothly, and it’s important to stay on top of all aspects of office management.

Paper, pens, staplers and desk supplies are small, but crucial. Larger items such as telephones, printers, and scale might mean the difference between instant success and a delayed start date. The greatest marketing plan in the world is not effective without business cards, brochures and other means to communicate.

Even cleaning supplies might slip your mind when you’re preparing your office, but after living with dust and potential spills for the first few days, you will quickly remember just how important it is to have all aspects of a business covered – no matter how small.

Communications

You need to communicate with employees, contractors and clients. Phones and emails are great, but what about flyers, brochures and packets? Finding a reliable printing service for large items and even small things like envelope labels will save you countless headaches and more than a few last minute trips to a rushed printer.

The Small Stuff

You never realize the value of a roll of tape or scissors until you can’t find any. Basic office supplies are the glue that holds the bigger pieces together, and you never want to be caught without pen and paper or, even worse, a shortage of post-it notes or paperclips.

Every office needs specific items to run smoothly, and whatever those items are, you can find them in Office Management.
