Virtual Reality

Monday, June 4th, 2007

Like many things in science, what was once science fiction is now reality. Virtual reality was the stuff of science fiction movies less than twenty years ago, yet it is here in full form and common enough to be found in arcades and homes throughout the world.

Defining Virtual Reality

Anything that only seems real is considered virtual reality. The term virtual reality may bring to mind bulky helmets and awkward suits, but the virtual reality of today is much more compact than that. Even the latest game system, Nintendo Wii has virtual reality aspects.

Large Scale Virtual Reality

Large scale virtual reality is found throughout society in places you might expect and others you might not. The government uses virtual reality training simulators for military and space maneuvers. Airline pilots use virtual reality to stay brushed up on their flight skills. And kids in your neighborhood can tell you the best places to play virtual reality games.

Many arcades now carry virtual reality games or adventures. These systems are large and might involve a domed area or the helmets of science fiction virtual reality shows. You can now dance, run, shoot, play sports or more inside an alternate universe for a few quarters at a time. For others, they prefer their virtual reality at home.

Virtual Reality at Home

Virtual reality is available at home as well. The Wii from Nintendo has a specialized controller that can be used in a virtual sword fight or as a virtual golf club. Other games independent of the system allow for a virtual experience in any number of games or sports. Virtual reality will continue to grow in popularity and availability and may only be matter of time before we are all off on a grand adventure without ever leaving our chair.

News and Media

For many, the internet has become a primary news source. Televised news takes up to an hour and must be watched in whatever order the items are presented. Internet news is ideal for our fast paced world because you can find anything at anytime without having to wait on commercials or the weather report.

Online News

Online news is available for very local items through global events. Online media outlets exist all over the world, so it is possible to find different viewpoints and different slants on exactly the same story without too much research. In a single trip online, you can find your local weather predication, the score from last night’s game and the latest news from overseas. All of this can take less than five minutes.

Streaming News

If you’re a news junkie, you can appreciate the streaming news feeds now available from many media sources. Breaking news can be delivered to your computer instantly and you are never out of the loop. You can let news items sit while you finish an important paper and then take break and scan the latest headlines in entertainment, world events or sports.

Static News

Online news is not entirely static. Originally, online media sites were simple stories to be read. Now, however, entire broadcasts can come through the internet and video clips and images are all over the sites. News stories are punctuated with images of the scene or a short video clip of the disaster.

Best of all, online news sources are updated almost instantly. The morning’s paper will not change, and even news channels can be a bit behind the times – if you’re fortunate enough to have the television tuned to the right channel at the right time. Online, however, you can glance at updated headlines throughout the day to stay current with anything and everything that matters to you.

Operating Systems

Every computer needs an operating system, but the number available today makes it possible to select the system that suits you best. Operating systems range from a few free options with limited user support to the latest and greatest Microsoft offering with most of us falling somewhere in between.

Most computer users are content with whatever operating system they have on their home computer. Every new computer purchase comes with a common system such as Windows XP or MacOS. The newest computers are coming out with Windows Vista. But if you are not satisfied with your operating system, or its time for an update, it is possible to change your computer’s operating system.

Changing Operating Systems

If you’re discovering that your Windows 98 isn’t keeping up with current software, you might trade your computer in for a new model with a newer operating system, or you can take advantage of operating systems for sale online or in computer stores.

For most computer users, Windows operating systems are most familiar. These include Windows 98 Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Vista. Apple users are familiar with MacOS X or earlier versions of the same system. This familiarity should not limit your choices when selecting a new operating system, however.

Many other systems are available that can be run instead of Windows. Linux is a popular option and there are other lesser known systems available as well. Many who use alternative systems feel they have fewer bugs than Microsoft systems and are simpler to use or more task specific.

Just because a computer comes with a certain software package installed certainly doesn’t mean you must keep it. Research your options and decide what would suit you and your computer use best. If you find another system that seems ideal, by all means, make the switch!
