Child Health

Saturday, June 23rd, 2007

Children are the apple of any parents’ eyes. A small scratch or a tiny bruise, a small accident or an ignorable fall sends either their mommies or daddies running to the child‘s rescue. If a child falls ill, then the mom or dad has sleepless and restless nights near the child’s bedside. Children are not very careful, especially as toddlers. As children, their immune system is not well developed and hence, they are more prone to catching a cold or getting a viral infection. In such a circumstance, it becomes even more of a responsibility and a priority to take care of the children’s health by their parents or guardians.

As the famous phrase goes, ‘Prevention is better than cure;’ to ensure that the child is not easily susceptible to any kind of illnesses, it would be a wise decision to get the child vaccinated at the right age as and when prescribed by the pediatrician. Try not to miss any vaccinations and even if you happen to do so, confirm with the doc when you can make up for the same. Start the child with a healthy diet right from the beginning making sure that the child consumes the right amount of proteins, carbohydrates and fats. These are just few of the things that are in your hands.

When the child is out playing with the other children; accidents, falls, scratches, and bruises are bound to occur, which are all a part of growing up. Most of the times these incidents are not very serious and the child will be perfectly all right after any such incidents. However, after a fall if you feel that your child is not his usual self, then take him to the pediatrician, just in case. If in case a bruise is deep and it won’t stop bleeding, then again rush him/her to the nearest hospital to have it checked right away.

Conditions and Diseases

Monday, June 4th, 2007

With the huge number of baby boomers aging as well as the overall lengthening of the average human life span, we are encountering considerably more medical conditions and diseases than in previous generations. The medical community is struggling to keep up with the intense number of new diagnoses every day. From allergies to rare disorders, there is always something new and troubling in medicine.

What’s Your Diagnoses?

It is rare to find someone that doesn’t have some form of diagnoses. Doctors in pediatrics are identifying more and more children suffering from ADHD or Autism and adults are being screened for sleep disorders and genetic conditions. Some of the classic diagnoses, such as cardiovascular disorders are still found in increasing numbers, but newer items including gynecologic disorders are becoming more common as well.

Popular Conditions

One definition of popular means well liked. Only a select few individuals enjoy being ill, but another definition is something in the mainstream. If a lot of people have it, it is popular. This is certainly the case for mental health disorders. It is great that doctors are taking patient woes more seriously now than in the past, but with the huge number of people now suffering from anxiety, depression and attention disorders, it does make you wonder if the symptom net is cast too widely.

In the past, the majority of the population was reasonably healthy with the exception of the common cold or seasonal allergies. Now, more adults have some sort of condition than not. The rare household has only aspirin in the medicine cabinet; it is far more common to see countless numbers of prescription pill bottles and creams.

Why the Fuss?

It doesn’t matter a great deal who has what illness, but it does reflect a sad truth of our society. We are either getting unhealthier, or some doctors are getting overzealous in diagnoses. There are proponents for both arguments, but most seem to come out in the middle. Yes, the stress and additional years of our lives make us a bit unhealthier, and yes, some doctors probably should prescribe diet and exercise before pills for many patients, but for others, having a diagnoses and the treatment it entails insures a quality of life otherwise not possible. In this case, the good definitely outweighs the bad.

Addiction

Monday, June 4th, 2007

Addiction is a disease that sneaks up on you. You may notice things around you starting to dissolve, but you may not realize how serious your potential condition is without intervention. However, if you’re struggling with your family, money or health, you may be sliding down the slippery slope of addiction without realizing it. Consider the following in deciding whether to seek out a support group or treatment.

Feeling Euphoria

Is there something you are doing that makes you feel great? Do you notice yourself doing it more and more? Perhaps gambling started as a fun hobby, but you keep playing because the thrill of the game is so much fun. The same can be said for substance abuse or drinking. A few drinks or hits started as a way to have fun, but now you don’t really feel happy unless you are in that euphoric state more and more often.

Obsession

It is one thing to enjoy something like the internet or sex, but it is another entirely when you dedicate your entire life to it. If you can’t leave the house for fear of missing something online or because you prefer your online world to the real one, you have cause for concern. If sex or good food becomes less of a pleasure and more of a mission, you might take a step back and reevaluate your reasoning.

Losing Control

Many adults fear losing control. Others simply seem unaware that it is happening to them. If money seems to be slipping through your fingers and you suddenly have bills you can’t pay, you might be in trouble. Your family that seemed so close and loving is now distant and threatening to walk out might also be an indicator that something is wrong.

Poor Choices

Finally, if you keep running into back luck and everyone is out to get you, there is probably something wrong. Making poor choices, such as drinking heavily and then driving or following someone home may not even occur to you as the wrong choice at the time. If you find yourself in trouble with the bank, your family or even the law, seek proper help.
