Don’t be mistaken, women love cool cars. The problem is that most men don’t know what’s cool. Recently, several men I know told me they’d love to buy a Lamborghini, because women love Lamborghinis. Heh, well here’s a newsflash: Women don’t like Lamborghinis. When you go to a car show, you don’t see women crowded around the Lambo’s. No. What some (shallow) women like are boyfriends who can afford Lamborghinis. Well—to hell with that. When it comes to women, I don’t like flank steak… I prefer to filet mignon. The best women out there, the ones worth spending your life with, are going to appreciate substance. Cool cars have substance, and their not necessarily flamboyant.

So what is a cool car? You know it when you see it. And that’s crucial. If someone has to explain to you why something is cool, even utter a single word, then it’s not cool. “Cool” is a laid back awesomeness that’s at peace with the world, but more than ready to defend itself. Like Fonzie. Modern Italian sports cars are awesome, but they’re not cool, because they’re just too much in your face. Now sure, there’s taste involved. It’s perfectly valid to say, “That’s cool… but not for me.” Everyone has their own style. That’s just human nature. Hopefully, one of the cars I’ll discuss here matches your style.

Mercedes-Benz 300SL "Gullwing"

We’ll start with a great one, the Mercedes Benz 300SL. Some of you may know it as the “Gullwing”. If you’ve seen a car with doors that open upward like wings, this is where that started. Many don’t know this, but back in the 1950’s Mercedes Benz was the force to be reckoned within automobile racing. The 300SL was the street legal version of their race car. This car is sexy, and even someone who doesn’t know cars will be able to tell it’s neat. For the sake of being cool though, the debate is in the doors. To the uninitiated, the gullwing doors may appear ostentatious. (It doesn’t matter that this is the only car in which it’s specialized frame actually required gullwing doors.) That said, a woman who isn’t offset by gullwing doors is a keeper. But if you’re nervous, there’s always the 300SL roadster. Problem solved. But if you’re looking for something…. less Germanic… a car that’s pure sex….

Jaguar XKE

…look no further than the Jaguar XKE. This car, simply put, is the epitome of 1960’s automobile design, which is considered by many to be the golden age of road cars. The XKE has a strangeness about it, perhaps brought about by their subtly phallic extra long hoods. If you’re planning on getting on though, ask around, as XKE’s are a bit of a mine field if you don’t know what you’re looking for. The later cars look horrid compared to the earlier ones. To make it easy, here’s what you want: a Series 1 car, preferably with the 4.2 liter engine. Get that and your set. The XKE isn’t expensive enough to be ostentatious, yet they’re still absolutely gorgeous. The car is elegant, yet a full force sports car. The ladies will love it. In fact, the only car I can think of that’s arguably cooler would be it’s cousin…

Aston Martin DB9

…the Aston Martin. Yes James Bond drove one of these. Ironically though, because of that, I wouldn’t recommend an older one such as the DB4, DB5, or DB6. They look too much like Bond’s iconic car, which means any woman you’re trying to impress will think you’re only a little boy pretending to be James Bond. No, we want a modern Aston Martin, and the best one of all is the DB9. Take a moment and just look at it. The sheer elegance of it is coupled with a subtle yet intimidating aggression. This car is primal: the perfect marriage of sex and violence. Yes, they’re expensive, but the car doesn’t shout that. And the Aston Martin Vantage, which is almost as good as the DB9, is substantially cheaper.

Chevy Camaro SS

So… let’s jump across the pond and see what America has to offer. Obviously they have their muscle cars and pony cars. The muscle cars are almost by definition brash. I personally love them, but I wouldn’t describe them as “cool”. In fact, I’d have a hard time describing pony cars as cool too. These cars are all about being in your face. However, if you made me choose… The Mustang is too common, and the Challenger too brash. If I were to pick only one muscle or pony car it would be a first generation Camaro with the RS/SS package. Despite being a great car, the Camaro was the underdog to the Mustang, which makes it cooler. Painted black, and driven with the right attitude… a Camaro can be cool. Just make sure you have that attitude when you pick up your date.

1965 Lincoln Convertible

If we’re looking at all American cars though for something cool though, then we need to look for a cruiser. No one does cruisers like the Americans. And personally, I think the coolest cruiser of them all is the Lincoln Continental, specifically the fourth generation (once again with that 60’s styling). My favorite is the 1965 Lincoln Convertible triple black, and I know I’m not alone, because that’s the exact type of car you see during the opening credits of “Entourage”. And to top it all off, the car has suicide doors, and suicide doors are *always* cool. Your date will be impressed.

I saved one special car for last. This is the one in which money is no option. If you’re a billionaire, and you’re looking for a cool car that’s exclusive to your price range, then what you want is a Ferrari 250 GTO. How much is it? One sold in 2008 for over $25 million. It’s a street legal Ferrari GT race car. Only 39 were ever made, and the original owners all had to be personally approved by Enzo Ferrari himself. There is one catch however. For this car to be cool… for this car to impress women and make them want a ride, you can never, ever, ever let them know how much you paid for it. The moment you do, they’ll either think you’re a braggart, frivolous with your money, or they’ll simply be afraid to even touch your car. (The only exception, of course, would be if she owns one too.)

Just like women, cars come in all sorts of styles, and beauty is certainly within the eye of the beholder. Cool is an attitude as much as anything else, and any of these cars can easily become uncool with a big enough dolt behind the wheel. So watch yourself, and when trying to attract the ladies, just try to be as cool as the car you drive.

Politicians do some downright stupid things. Sure, we all do. But these are the people who draft our laws — the ones who decide how the rest of us should live and behave. Maybe you consider wars you disagree with to be “stupid” decisions. Perhaps it’s the latest report of infidelity from politicians that’s getting under your skin. But today let’s have some fun and look at the lighter side of government gaffs by exploring some incredibly stupid laws that may still be on the books.

Please note that I am not saying all of these dumb laws are still in effect (or even were). But they’re examples reported for various states in the U.S. and some international laws as well. Maybe they’ll make more sense to you than to me. Or perhaps you’ll also find them good for a laugh.

1. In Pennsylvania it’s illegal to have more than 16 women live in the same house — doing so makes it a brothel.

I wanted to kick things off with an example of a dumb law from my own home state. I’m not sure if the specifics reported are right, or if it’s still the case (as opposed to an old law). But I do remember the topic coming up periodically when I was in college. It was a concern for sororities where groups of “sisters” would share a sorority house.

[source]

2. In Sweden it’s claimed that it’s illegal to paint a house without a painting license from the government.

Well, if that’s the case I’m glad I don’t live in Sweden. I just painted my place this spring, and am planning to do some more paint touch-ups soon. While this sounds like a pretty stupid law, I could maybe understand it if it’s outdated and became law out of concerns over lead-based paint or something.

[source]

3. It’s reported that in San Antonio, Texas it’s illegal to use your eyes or hands while flirting.

Why not just ban flirting altogether? Outdated, still on the books — I don’t know. But this is one where I can’t even begin to understand the logic if it’s true… not even in a historical context. You?

4. Don’t send the kiddies trick-or-treating on Halloween in Virginia.

It’s reported that doing so is illegal. Again, I’m not sure if this is legit or current. But the idea doesn’t really surprise me. I know where I live Halloween trick-or-treating is very different than it was when I was a kid. They’ve put strict limits on the time kids can go out, and I seem to remember them deciding trick-or-treating should be a different day at some point — maybe if Halloween was on a school night. So no, if this is true, it wouldn’t really surprise me. Just for curiosity’s sake, have you seen changes in trick-or-treating since you were a kid too? Or do I just live in a dud of a town?

[source]

5. In Singapore, oral sex is illegal (unless it leads to the real deal).

Let’s be honest here. Sex laws can sometimes be the funniest. It’s usually a case of them being outdated, based in times when public opinion was quite different. And when it comes to international sex laws, I’m pretty “forgiving,” because I certainly don’t understand every culture out there. What sounds crazy to me might be perfectly normal there. But this one? I really hope it’s just a joke or at least off the books now. Oral sex is illegal, unless you use it as foreplay. Why do I suspect only a man could come up with that idea?

[source]

6. While we’re talking about Singapore, tourists take note: it’s also illegal to pee in an elevator.

Because apparently we need a reminder….

[source]

7. Way to go Fairbanks, Alaska! (They cleaned up filthy moose sex on city streets!)

Credit: gainesp2003 (via Flickr)

This is one of those reported laws that’s so incredibly stupid I can’t help but hope it’s true (because that makes it all the funnier). As if animals give a moose’s behind what our laws say. If it works, maybe my local officials can write a law that would stop those damned birds from crapping on my car.

[source]

8. In Canada, it’s reported that it’s illegal for clear and non-dark sodas to be caffeinated.

Ironically, just this morning I was talking to someone about caffeinated beverages (yes, my life is so relevant to my work!). I never actually knew that Mountain Dew had caffeine (haven’t had it in years either). It was pointed out to me that it’s indeed one of the most caffeinated sodas here in the U.S. So when I saw this stupid law I immediately thought of Mountain Dew. And I just had to look it up — is Canadian Mountain Dew different from “real” Mountain Dew? And it seems that it is (or at least was)! I don’t understand why the law was created in the first place, but I found it to be one of the most interesting. Yes. I find soft drinks fascinating. Shut up.

[source]

9. In Washington State, it’s illegal to use x-ray machines to find the perfect shoe fit.

The hilarity of this dumb law is in its specificity. Sometimes when you read about stupid laws, they’re actually just taking general laws and twisting them to sound silly (like a ban on large animals such as big dogs on a beach being twisted to say you can’t take a polar bear to the beach). But this one isn’t one of those. The law specifically mentions shoe fittings, and you can see the actual text of the law in the source for this one. I could completely understand a law banning any non-medical use of x-ray equipment because of the radiation involved. But to specifically call out shoe fittings? What were they thinking? I just can’t imagine so many people in Washington State trying to do this that they felt it necessary to make it illegal.

[source]

10. In New Jersey, it’s illegal for a murderer to wear a bullet-proof vest while committing that crime.

Well, I guess if you can’t get him on the other charges….

[source]

Remember to take these dumb laws with a grain of salt. They’re meant for amusement more than anything. Do you know more about any of these reported stupid laws? Do you have a favorite silly law that’s still on the books where you live? Leave a comment and tell us about it!

1. Unlike traditional male fantasies, no one expects you to live up to his.

You’ll never be some virtuous, other-worldly princess-warrior type who runs around half naked and kicks some serious ass. So what? Your geek gets that. He’s not going to push the issue. An “average” man on the other hand? Yeah, he probably really does hope that one day you’ll finally start calling him your “daddy,” in bed, let him spank you after he binds you in leather, and maybe even have a threesome with the cute chick he flirts with at the office. Go with a geek — unrealistic fantasies perhaps, but the expectations are easier to live up to. And hey, there’s still plenty of room for leather….

2. You never have to fake a headache.

As you know, sometimes a key to being a great lover is to know when not to push for sex! If you’re tired of faking headaches to get out of it after a long day at work, a geeky guy is right up your alley. Not in the mood? That’s okay. Just plop his ass down in front of the TV and treat him to an unexpected Star Trek or Dr. Who marathon. He’ll forget what he’s missing in no time.

3. He’ll pay attention to your needs too.

With many of the Average Joe types, sex begins and ends with the whims of his penis. Men can be quite selfish in bed. You would think by now they would have learned that if they’d put in just a little bit of that effort to actually please their woman, they’d get far better sex far more often. But sadly, no. It’s a foreign concept to many. Not to that geek you’ve got your eye on though — he’ll be so happy to see a real woman naked that you pretty much double your chances of him actually paying attention to your needs!

Credit: BigStockPhoto.com

4. He’s always up for a little roleplay.

Let’s face it ladies. A little bit of kink never hurt anyone. And with a geeky guy by your side, you’re sure to have some fun pursuing fantasies of your own. After all, do you really think he’ll turn down that hot little brainiac tutor getup you rock so well, or is your man going to be irresistibly hot for teacher?

5. He’ll only have eyes for you (okay, and that weird chick or whatever it is from that game you wish he wouldn’t play so much).

Geeky men rarely realize how hot they actually are. But shhhh! Don’t tell them. We wouldn’t want their egos going to their heads. Geeks can be incredibly devoted lovers. After all, when you factor in the time he spends with you, his computer, his remote control, his video games, his films, and his various conventions, there really isn’t any time left to have a wandering eye. You’ll be appreciated for putting up with his various quirks, he’ll make you feel like that exotic princess he fantasizes about, and when he makes you feel like the only (living) woman in the world, the sex can be infinitely more satisfying.

Okay, okay. So not every geek is going to be a god in bed, but if you’re already attracting duds what’s it going to hurt to give one a try? You may be pleasantly surprised.

I think that’s all we have time for in today’s little girl chat though. I have a bit of “field research” I need to get back to.

I’m a bit anal about my personal space. In public, I like to keep a nice distance between me and people I don’t know. The habit stems from my childhood. As your typical socially awkward nerd, I quickly learned that staying away from people was the best way to avoid embarrassment — not like it mattered. Sometimes it felt like everyone was pointing out how much of a loser I was. For a while I thought that billboard would never come down.

These days I’m more confident, but I still have a few of my old tendencies. You’ll see them if you ever come with me to a bookstore. Every so often some guy enters the aisle I’m in and decides that, out of all the books in the entire store, the one he wants to look at is right next to my feet. It doesn’t matter where I happen to be. I could be in the Kinky Backwards Sex aisle and this guy will think, “Hey, that dude looks desperate enough. Maybe he knows where to find that book about banging your coffee machine.”

He’ll decide to walk over and crouch right next to me. Now I don’t know what to do. I have to run through my options. Do I stay there and remain uncomfortable? It could build character after all. Isn’t that how it works? You build character by suffering? If that’s true, that guy who wrote Angela’s Ashes had enough character building to rewrite the Harry Potter series. There’s no way I can compete with that — I only have enough character for a pamphlet.

Credit: BigStockPhoto.com

Maybe I could make a subtle move to make him back off. You know how it is. You’re standing in the checkout line and someone slaps their gut against your back, so you do a little stretch or flare out your elbows. You bump into him, he backs off. “I’m sorry!” you say. “I didn’t see you there!”

Of course in reality you’re wishing you had super strength and your poke knocked him to the back of the store. Really, is anyone going to believe you had to stretch right then and there? You just happened to, at that very moment, walk in line and think, “Wow, my shoulders are really tense. I better do some cardio while the lady rings up my Hot Pockets.”

The final option is to back out and move to another section. If I’m at the end of the aisle and I want to look somewhere else, I’ll walk out. No problem. But what if I want to look at something past the guy who’s reading about coffee sex? I can’t just swing past him. That violates the whole “personal space” thing we’re trying to maintain.

Instead I have to go around. I have to walk out the end of my current aisle, charge through the nearest aisle, then leave that and move to the other end of the aisle where I started. I’ll play this real casual too, even though I look like I’m surveying the area in case I want to tear it down. (But first, I gotta go to the dairy section and tell Welfare Smurf to pack his things.)

Now, I know there’s no reason to act this way. I only avoided people while growing up because I was afraid of rejection. It’s not like I’m alone — we all fuss over our personal space. Even if I was a popular kid, I would’ve probably picked up some of these habits anyway. That’s how our culture is wired. Granted, it broke in the mail, but God just never got around to sending it back.

Think about it. When you get a table at the library, what do you do? You sling your stuff over it. You claim it as your table. Nobody’s going to challenge that — they’d sit on the wall if they could to avoid landing near you or anyone else. Next time someone is forced to sit at your table, feel the tension that swells up. You pretend it doesn’t bother you and he pretends it doesn’t bother him, but it actually bothers you two way too much. Both of you are waiting for the other guy to leave so you can feel safe again. After all, no one must know that I’m still trying to find Waldo.

When you go into a restaurant, do you hate it when the waiter plants you in a booth next to one that’s being used? It’s really bad when the booths are empty, save for one, and the waiter wants me to sit across from it. Haven’t you ever wanted to ask if you can sit in a booth that’s farther away? We don’t do it because we don’t want to look selfish, but really, we’d all like to be the mob boss that rents out the booths around him. And if you’re American, there’s a good chance that your body parts need that space anyway.

Now, I’m not saying you’re bad for feeling this way. It happens to all of us. (Especially me, and I’m damn near perfect.) Still, we can bear to let strangers close once in a while. Heck, if we get used to that, maybe we can strike up conversation with someone who turns out to be a new friend. Sure, Facebook and MySpace are fun, but in the end man is a sociable creature. We have a lot to gain when we move past our boundaries and open ourselves to others. (Just remember — entering a crime scene and shouting “I’ll take it from here” doesn’t count.)

I would be the worst lawyer / doctor / general / deity ever.

That’s the conclusion I reach whenever I play simulation games. You know — games where you pretend you’re in a certain role and manage the lives of others. In these games you can save lives as a doctor, micromanage a family, run a diner… you can even rule over entire planets if you want (although let’s face it — some people aren’t fit enough to run Planet Smoothie).

While you may be able to play these games, I can’t. That’s because I always choke. I get so involved with the characters that I don’t want to let them down. For me it transcends the fictional context. I have to protect these people. I have to win. If I don’t I’ve failed them, and I’ve also failed as a human being.

So naturally, when everything’s on the line my gaming skills are like, “You know, I have this sudden urge to gamble. Let’s go to Vegas. Right now.“

Credit: BigStockPhoto.com

Take the Phoenix Wright series for example. In those games you play as a defense lawyer. It’s a good thing my client came to Willard & Soundwave, a firm full of mail-order lawyers and the only practicing action figure in the state. I mean it’s bad enough that I suck at these games, but a game where I have to stop my client from going to jail? That’s impossible (especially if you already paid for the hit).

In Phoenix Wright you have to examine testimony closely. That’s how you find contradictions. But at Willard and Soundwave, we pride ourselves on missing facts that are big enough to crash into buses. Look, the only reason I’m missing these facts is because I’m nervous. I’m trying to convince the judge that this guy didn’t kill anybody, but the prosecution keeps countering my arguments and all the while my client keeps asking me who’s going to feed his twenty sisters. It’s unbearable. I’m just praying that something takes out the entire courtroom at this rate. Let’s just hope Iron Man sees the candles I light for him.

Games like SimCity and Spore aren’t much better. In those you have to direct little civilizations so they can survive and prosper. Yeah, because I was so good at handling one person’s life. Do you know the kind of responsibility we’re dealing with here? Think about it. How would you feel if you suddenly became a deity, and your actions determined if a species lived or died? That’s some heavy stuff, and when you get involved in these games like I do you’ll see why a lot of us wouldn’t be able to handle the responsibility (especially if you trained in godhood at DeVry).

Even if my goal was to kill everyone else and conquer the entire world, I’d still do badly. That’s why I can’t even play turn-based strategy games. Sure, you’re focusing on managing resources and building an army, but in the end it’s still a game where your decisions carve the fate of a nation.

It really doesn’t help when the game has a black “fog of war” effect that won’t let you see areas of the map you haven’t explored. Then my strategy usually defaults to “let’s stay in this valley and hope the war blows over.” Once again I can’t bear to risk my units. War Rule #29 — don’t risk your troops until you can make your army of Hulk Hogans.

Heck, I even have trouble raising virtual pets, and there’s no reason why I should. Unlike being a lawyer or a general, I have real-world experience with pets. I’ve owned several cats and dogs and I’ve taken care of them without too much trouble. But give me a virtual pet and suddenly I’m Vile McScumlord, Pet Destroyer. Virtual pets don’t chill by the window all day you know — they demand constant attention. You have to feed them, clean up their poop, and play with them. (One time I had to help mine move his couch.)

When you screw up, they go out of their way to make you feel like the worst piece of horse crap in the entire world. I remember back when virtual pets were banned from schools because everyone was fiddling with them in class. When I had a virtual puppy, I had to leave this thing alone for seven hours and when I came back, oh, it was horrible. The puppy’s whining, he’s hungry, and he’s surrounded by his own poop. I felt like a monster. Then Van Helsing would stab me. He never was very good with alcohol.

It’s kind of ironic really. I play violent video games where I can kill scores of people, but in a game where I have to protect my own I can’t follow through. Both games are fictional, but I’m only comfortable when I’ve got the big sword or the heavy rifle. A scalpel? Forget it. I can’t help you. I don’t want to risk disappointment.

Hmmm. Maybe I desensitized myself to the wrong kind of game.

(By the way, if you’re interested, I’m holding a sale — 10% off on all hits up to a hundred yards.)

Have you even driven down a familiar road rather nonchalantly and passed an unexpected sign that made you do a double-take? Every once in a while we stumble across (and okay, some people just create them in Photoshop) strange and funny signs that leave us laughing and itching for more. Too many signs out there are busy telling us what to do. “Stop.” “Yield.” “Beware of Dog.” (Come on — how many of those houses really have a vicious dog waiting to take you out if you set foot on the property anyway?) Why can’t more signs be funny signs? If you can’t get enough, this collection of funny signs will give you something to smile about (even as you’re running for your life from that seemingly-rabid Rover).

You know, I love the Internet. You can learn new information, play games and best of all, you can make a lot of new friends. With forums and social networks, you can forge a relationship with anyone across the globe without actually meeting face-to-face. This is essential for me. See, in public social situations, I tend to sweat bullets. When two gangs have a shootout, they make me talk to women so they never run out of ammo.

The big problem with the ability to communicate with anyone is that some people abuse it. For whatever reason, these people abandon their manners on the Internet and act like complete douche bags. Instead of being courteous, they go to blogs and videos and forums and try to rile people up with insulting comments. Much of the time this works — except on Cthulhu.com’s forum where it gets you promoted to being a moderator.

It’s not just guys either. Is it just me, or do a lot of these Internet jerks seem to be females? I’m not saying all girls are nice and frilly-dilly, but I’m always a bit surprised when I find a girl online acting like, well, a bitch. I daresay some girls online are bigger douche bags than guys can be. Maybe it’s just on the websites I usually visit. After all, with a name like UnderwaterBicycleSex.com, you’re sure to attract unwanted attention.

But why? Why would these people forget about common courtesy and resort to attacking others? My sources tell me that it’s all apparently for something called “the lulz.” When “the lulz” are had these people become truly happy, overjoyed and filled with laughter. Is it because “the lulz” are an object of power awarded to the meanest of Internet jerks? Or is it more of a philosophy, similar to zen and finding peace within douche-baggery? I’m not sure if I’ll ever find out — no one’s responded to my ad for help on Craigslist. I guess no one wants to be paid in back rubs.

Still, I don’t think I need “the lulz.” Yes I seek enlightenment like all great men, but a form of enlightenment that isn’t unlocked by making fun of someone based on their sexual preference. Yes it can be quite funny, but is it the right thing to do? As I travel through this mortal realm, I can only hope that the choices I make will be the right ones — the superior ones compared to the ones people like you make. No, I have no need for “the lulz.” I will defy destiny. I will find my own path.
