I have lived in South Africa my entire life, and I assure you it isn’t half as bad as people make out. The numbers you see are all from the rural township areas, and I’m sure no European immigrant would be living there. The urban areas are mostly white-populated, and I have never been a victim of crime. It’s a stunning country, and I certainly don’t plan on leaving any time soon

I lived in Johannesburg for 4 years (as we as all over Europe, Australia and USA over the last 13 years) and I know from area to area and person to person the perception of crime is sharply contrasted. I’d love to return to SA but always get worried I won’t get work since I am white (and my partner is black Zimbabwean)

It’s obvious from the list you were born and raised in the USA. Miama is far from the top in the world for Sizzling and Sexy. For one, Montreal, Quebec, Canada trumps it easily. If anyone disagrees then they obviously haven’t been there. Why sacrifice the healthcare perk for partying when it’s both offered in Montreal? Montreal has been called Disneyland for Adults, and for good reason. With multi-cultural diversity, the majority of the population bilingual, a smaller percent less than 60 (11% for Montreal compared to 21% in Miami, because nobody find grandma and grandpa sexy in a swimsuit) and almost 5 times the population, how is Miami better?

I have to say that I think that your article is wonderful and I appreciate you writing it. My husband and I are US citizens who currently reside in Japan and are looking for our retirement country. We are pretty well traveled ourselves but still have SO MANY places that we would like to visit. It may be that we will never find just one that suits our purposes, but I really enjoy hearing about places that other US citizens (As we have a similar basis for comparison) recommend.

If you don’t mind Anne, i would like to comment on your post. Amsterdam, the city where i live is is indeed quite liberal. There is a big red light district, yes you can pay and have sex. But isn’t that the same as any big city in the world? We only gave it a place, to make sure it can be watched and regulated, taking it of the streets. Same goes for marihuana. There is scientific proof that its a less harmful drug than alcohol, and its more controlled by providing it in specialized shops. I would like to make a note that i don’t do drugs, period. And that restaurant where girls serve you naked, not entirely true. they serve you in bikini’s, including top. Its a big tourist attraction. The liberal mindset makes it possible to be yourself, gay, straigt, cross-dresser, black or white. That makes it a very nice place to live for me!

I live in Miami and it sucks!!! i dont know what criteria they use to come with this but some places shouldnt make it. Miami is very dirty and everything is cramped. Parking is hell. Its a great place to visit temporarily but not for everyday living.

That’s funny, because lot of my friends had guns when I lived in Australia from 2003 to 2006. Same as in New Zealand so these countries are not as safe from firearms as people make out. I remember hearing gunshots a few times in Sydney too(though, mostly western suburbs I admit). OK, but it is nothing like SA (I did live in Hillbrow, JoBurg though) or the USA where I would not say the majority on average have guns, but a large number overall.
Oh yea, Australia is bureaucratic as hell too, just like USA and UK. Opening a bank account or getting your tax number is an all day affair, total pain in the ass. THis is one area where NZ (nanny state) has it’s shit together.

Sure, some elements of other cultures that resemble the majority can be healthy, but to much just causes crime, distrust between citizens and problems.

Tokyo has been my favorite place to live so far. Its safe, clean and you could never possibly be bored. The Japanese health care system is fantastic and the standard of living is reasonably high.

I would not include Paris among the 10 ten places to live. Yes it is beautiful and there are lovely scenes here, but there are cities in France that are less expensive, also lovely and more clean, welcoming and friendly. Paris is romantic for a vacation, but to live here.. it is extremely different!! At times very difficult, full of pollution and many other problems.
Also it is “Eiffel.”
And Parisians are famous to be the most unfriendly citizens of Europe. Try to ask anyone for an address or if you get lost, no matter if you try it in French.

I have to agree with the comments about the crime. It should be a given that the best place in the world to live in would include not having a high chance, statistically, of being raped, assaulted, robbed, or killed…I’ve lived in about 20 countries and the ones that stand out to me are:
Vienna: If you adore classical music and a high quality of life (voted #1 quality of life last year)
Tuscany, Italy: If you adore food and rolling hills
Calcutta, India: For the most hospitable people
Accra, Ghana: For the friendliest people (there’s a difference)
Istanbul, Turkey: For its combination of exoticism and the comforts of home
Berlin, Germany: For its relative inexpensiveness and interesting history
Jerusalem, Israel: For the religious and archaeolgical buffs
And cheers to NYC, it’s my favorite city in the States.

The Isle of Man is the best place to live. I’ve travelled Australia and loved it and if it were closer to the UK I would move there tomorrow but… Venice is out of this world (Shabby Chic as its Italian – if it were English it would just be shabby!!) anyway I’ve been to various countries and I’m always happy to return to the Isle of Man. I am looking at retiring to Fortaleza, Brazil. I’ve been to Rio…a little too busy for me.
Brazil is a beautiful country with a much improved economy. They did have economic and inflationary issues in the 90′s. Unfortunately, crime continues to be a problem in Rio, although the police are taking a more aggresive approach with crime in the favelas (slums).
London is one of the most boring places to live. Very good info about Brazil and although there is not much info on the crime scene like miami we have to weigh up the facts based upon all factors.
Oh god I so disagree. London is a totally exciting place to live…I lived there for 5 years in the late 60′s and early 70′s and still visit quite often. Music art theatre shopping etc etc is outstanding.

I am brazilian, but have lived in several places around the world. Brazilian big cities are as safe and dangerous as any other big city in the world. Just use common sense to stay safe. People generally get impressed by the news about favelas/slums. Stay out of these areas, and you’re okay. The public health system isn’t great, but it’s not bad either. I’ve seen worse systems in so-called “developed” countries. Private insurance plans are reasonably affordable and offer good coverage. I just have complaints about the lack of infrastructure at some places, and the income inequality, which generates lots of other problems, but these issues are being tackled and getting solved, step by step. Hopefully in 15-20 years we’ll be able to say Brazil is a fully developed country.
I read your comments and was wondering where you would suggest the best places in brazil to live. I use to live Porto Alegre for a couple of years. Are there some good schools out there for older adults like 40 +.

I currently live in Arnhem in The Netherlands. But I would love to live in Amsterdam. I find it weird that people are disliking Amsterdam because soft drugs are legal and there is a red light district. As mentioned before, making some drugs & prostitution legal was only for the better. And from my own experience, growing up with many friends who have smoked or are still smoking pod, I can only say that it hasn’t effected me at all. Using the stuff is your own decision. I have no reason to use it, and because of that I haven’t used it. For me, the only negative thing about Amsterdam is that it is currently known as “Gay Capitol”, I am less keen on that. Anyway, one should go to the city and form its own opinion
Yes I agree. I love love love Amsterdam. It is a wonderful place to live. I lived there for 6 months and am thinking of moving there semi-permanently.
I’m quite partial to Spain at the moment, especially Andalucia where the culture is quite different from the rest of Spain, and the weather is fantastic.

Yeah I agree the South African crime rate is high but I wouldn’t blame poverty for that because in terms of the richest countries in the Africa is concerned South Africa is the richest. On the other hand the difference between the rich and the poor is bigger then most places around the world and why is everyone making a fuss about SA as if their countries are way way better then SA. How could people survive there if it’s as bad as your’ll say it is? People buy too much as to what the media says about certain places, I’ve never been to any Brazilian city so it’s hard for me to tell whether it’s as dangerous as people make it out to be. I guess different strokes for different folks some day you will be mugged in a place you consider the safest in the world just because people are naive and ignorant at the same time.
Greece is lovely country!
Greece is fabulous but not the city so much anymore, high crime with the albanian immigrants who are treated badly anyway but has made Greece overcrowded and difficult. The islands are still like the old Greece, gorgeous beaches, amazing food, very international and safer.

If you like to see rare protected birds bieng shot out of the sky just for fun by pea-brained hunters while getting full support of politicians for fear of losing votes, then Malta is definitely the place to visit.
If you don’t mind fainting when receiving your energy bill then Malta is nice for you.
If you like the beaches but won’t mind noise pollution of sorts from unregulated fireworks, loud music from parties, car stereos, people who love to shout when they’re supposed to be talking, noisy car silencers etc then Malta would be a peach for ya.
Prices are unregulated and when shopowners get a hint that you’re a tourist, the price rockets sky high.
The average Maltese household is very clean from the inside but the rest of the island is plain filthy with countryside getting rapidly ruined going to speculators due to an obviously corrupt permit system.
It’s pitiful for it’s such a pretty little island too… a damn shame!
wow tim . you must have got screwed huge mate . i went there and spent a year and had a ball and work was plentiful and bills were minimal.i stayed in iklin which is where all the squillionaires live for 60 euros a week and had an indoor pool …

I think you people have missed the overall explanation here. Terra is not telling you “hey look at these cities, this is where you should live” NO she is simply saying if you are this type of person and have this type of personality, then this area of the world would be a nice place for you to look at and maybe even live at. So all you people arguing about the bad in these places should stop and realize that your not being forced to live anywhere, your simply reading a persons well thought out opinion about these places and what is so good about them. Lastly I think one of the places I would choose would be brazil. But not for retirement simply for the calmness and tranquil it offers.

I have lived in South Africa all my life. People from abroad that come to South Africa loved the place. Most of the coe here for the second time. Most of the people that havent been to South Africa say that the crime is high.
Our country is a good country. We have peacefull elections. We even had a President leave office early is a dignified manner. I have been to other countries. South Africa is my home and in my opinion one of the best countries in the world.

I have lived in South Africa may whole life and I do not know a single person who has not had a crime committed against them. I’m had my house broken into numerous times, attempted highjacking and friends murdered. Its a beautiful country but its unfortunately ruined by that percentage of the population that rape and murder everyone else without any fear of the law because there is none. Unless people actually face up to the crime sitution and stop calling it “not bad” then it’ll never stop. Oh and I live in a secure boomed off suburb in Joburg far from the townships. This happens all over the place not just in the townships. But obviously people will respond and call me unpatriotic and tell me to leave but at least I’m telling potential people considering living here the truth about the place. And by the way there is zero healthcare, public transport, education(unless you really pay for it), electricity and water cuts at least once a week, potholes all over the roads, taxi drivers who will literally kill you if you don’t let them in your lane and the most arrogant, unfriendly nation you’ll ever experience. Go somewhere lese or you’ll be very sorry. And like I said I am a South African.

For me South Africa may have scenic beauty, but there is too much that is uncivilized and dangerous. Who wants to live some place like THAT? Not me. I want to experience living in a country that is safe, with a good climate, a secure economy and strong banking system, and where officials are intelligent and reliable.

BULL! Miami is one of the worst places I’ve ever been to. I’ve done a heck of a lot of traveling in my life, having spent considerable time on every continent (including an Antarctic expedition following in Shackleton’s foot steps) and I’ve always considered Florida to be one of the worst places. Most of the Southern US is pretty rough as far as the people are concerned, and Florida is definitely not an exception. I would put Vancouver on this list in a heartbeat, as well as Geneva and Rio de Janeiro. Amsterdam however was an excellent choice. I’m living there now!

Every educated Capetonian knows which areas have high levels of crime and we avoid them most of the time. Besides most of the bad areas in Cape Town (Western Cape) are safe during the day.
Then if you looking for the vibes and the parties. The glitz and the glam. Peace and beauty. Long story short if a good life is what you are looking for then come to Cape Town.
If you can earn R25 000 per month or higher you are set for your best time of your life. Espeically if you are below 30years of age. No doubt! All you foreigners do the math because you can learn something from this!
Bottom line Cape Town is a hidden secret and no matter what, deep down inside the Mother City will always be my true home on this planet!
Totally agree with you Saul. Cape Town is a very special place and in my opinion one of the safest places I’ve been to. Keep in mind I never go down-town or to townships. I feel much safer walking around at night in Cape town then I ever did in London or some parts of Paris. (victim of crime in London & Paris before) But Gauteng (Pretoria & Johannesburg are probably of the most dangerous cities in the world. Cape town is run by a different government meaning – less crime, more jobs, less racial conflict and happy citizens. Gauteng is sooo corrupt almost everyday you hear in the news about some kind of tender deal going to politicians friends who barely have a high school qualification.

i have lived in thailand for over 25 yrs and it is challenging. it is a great place for a guy. women might like it but asia is a mans world and women are treated like 2nd class citizens. living here is cheap. there are lots of attractions. i live here because i have found a niche in the export trade and i made probably more than if i lived back in the usa. i came here for excitement and i do get that.
on the minus side thailand is corrupt and it touches you now and then. they political scene is sillier than most. the country is literally for sale. you could buy almost anything here. most of the tourist destinations here are trashed and the thais do little to clean it up.
having said all of that my favorite large city in the world is hong kong because it has a pulse and thailand has one as well only slower.
Well, Ireland is a pretty good place to live despite our financial troubles but the weather is sooo bad!

I would strongly disagree with Frankfurt. It may be wealthy, and there certainly are many jobs, but there is no middle-class in Frankfurt. The wealth gap in Frankfurt is simply to big. The large amount of wealthy bankers is contrasted by loads of homeless, junkies and unemployed. In Germany, cities like Munich and particularly Hamburg offer a higher standart of living, a nicer atmosphere and a higher diversity with makes for a lively community!

The coolest thing about the US is that you can literally find almost every type of climate and ecosystem on the planet, all in a single first-world, English-speaking, culturally diverse country. Most of our western states are bigger than many European countries. Too bad we have to pay for our own health insurance. Oh well, next week I’m taking a drive out to remote eastern Oregon to camp with my wife under the stars on a beautiful high desert landscape, on National Forest land with nobody else within a 20-mile radius of us, where I’ll happily shoot my arsenal of perfectly legal firearms to my heart’s content. I expectthat many people will believe that they live in the best place. I live in a town in England that has some of the best air quality in the country. My local hospital, doctor and dentist are within walking distance and healthcare is free at source. It’s in the driest area of the country but has enough water.
I can not own my own handgun or hunting rifle. There are other problems in the area too but I have a wonderful wife and family. I am happy.
I agree. Most people are always gonna see the positives if they like where they live while others see only the negative. Obviously, EVERY country has BOTH and people need to learn to see that. For example, my family is Puerto Rican. I was born in NY and raised for almost my entire life in NJ and almost NEVER felt American. I’m not patriotic at all and instead feel closer to the European lifestyle. Most people will talk of the “American Dream,” but to me it feels quite hollow. Don’t get me wrong, there are many good things about living here. I love the democracy and standard of living, but it’s far too capitalist for me, (the gap in rich and poor is spreading by the day) too Christian/religious (especially in the South) which is quite intolerant and impedes progress, and there’s barely any history older than colonial times. I’d far rather live in a more moderately capitalist and secular country with more history. But like I said, each place has their pros and cons and this is MY opinion of the country I was born in and lived for my 25 years of life.
Also, people may “love” owning and shooting guns and that’s all fine and dandy for hunting. But when they’re so readily available to anyone who even looks of age can buy one without any training, licenses, or background information (What if the person had a history of gun violence?) like in many Southern states with their “gun shows,” THAT’S when things get very dangerous and THAT’S why gun violence is so high in our country. Our many school shootings were no coincidence. I guess we’ll never learn. Consider yourself lucky then that it’s different in the UK. If no one is allowed to own guns, then no one can shoot anyone. Or the ones that do are already criminals by just possessing one which helps in the process of targeting suspects.

Eventually i would like to travel more and maybe live elsewhere. Ideally if i had enough money i would like to travel the world, with my kids and husband when there schooling has finished!

Hilariously bad list. At least call it ” Top Ten places in the world that I’ve heard of/visited”". Obviously a very USA biased list, Australia has a far higher standard of living than the USA, amazing climate, low crime compared to places you’ve listed and has nothing featured, and the well known extremely livable nations of Norway, Canada and Sweden also are not mentioned, possibly due to the cold weather. Surprised you didn’t throw San Francisco and LA in there as well.

Oh so I am lucky that I lives in Amsterdam for some years now, but if I have to choose between Amsterdam and Paris, I would choose for Amsterdam. Paris is only nice for vacations, I think.

I don’t know about Paris being the most romantic… I notice that most people seem to believe this and it is simply not true. Maybe one of the dirtiest places you could possibly live, I think people would think differently about the “romanticism” of this city if they took a walk down the dust, garbage and cigarette butt covered streets or strolled through some of the parks that are mysteriously weed-free and mostly covered with drab sand-looking walkways packed with so many chemicals to control weeds from disrupting the little amount of greenery that is actually there that pets aren’t allowed; most likely because they are at ground level with these chemicals, not because Parisian parks and rec think that the citizens are irresponsible in cleaning up after their pets. Oh, and then there’s the crazy amount of people trying to scam or beg or otherwise harass you around virtually all of the popular traditionally thought to be “romantic” areas. Then there’s the “romantic” two hour wait in line to get up the Eiffel tower any time of they day, or the “romantic” body odors filling half of the subway cars that you ride because many individuals in this town don’t seem to take hygiene too seriously… Then again the water bills rack up insanely quickly if you ever live here, so actually I understand the less common frequency of bathing by some inhabitants. Ok enough ranting. Bottom line- Paris is nice to visit and has some great food and really kind people regardless of stereotypical views of the “rude Parisian,” but the idea that it is some kind of romantic city to visit and live in is also a stereotypical and really silly, illusory conclusion to come to in my opinion.

Nice bickering, the reason I asked my question and ended up in this blog is because I already live in the best city in the world (Sydney) yet I somehow feel that we are being overrun by a different way of life because of the constant competition between people.
Us Australians (well the good old Gen X that didn’t do anything wrong, just inherited it), we value freedom, hard work, back-breaking work actually, we love all human beings (no matter of race or colour – religion is still up for discussion). however everyone thinks because it’s so good here, we have it easy. This is not the case. You cannot buy a house in Australia (not even a shack) for under $500,000 (and yes, we are $1.05 amercian dollars so super expensive) our averages wages are less than $50,000 per year, so while it is a great place to live, you will never actually be able to get ahead financially. The money in this city belongs to the top 10% of all the world – why not – ask the richest guy in each of your countries where they would buy property – Australia is the answer.
I feel shitty that out country is being taken over by immigrants plainly because of the minerals in the ground. When I grew up (10 yrs ago) there were more immigrants than Australians in my year at school. None of these people ever wanted me to give up my Australian attitude or way of life, they embraced it. I can only hope that these girls/boys who were treated so equally by us during these years will treat us with the same respect in the years to come as they prosper and take over by numbers. No single being is better than anyone else. Why we think otherwise is beyond me.
Anyway off the topic – Just think about where you want to live before you make any drastic moves. We have people dying everyday in attempt at a better life here in Australia. Believe me, medical benefits are only good if the hospitals can actually get to you in time, and if someone cares. at the moment, no-one does, so please be careful before travelling here.
PS. For the first time in my life I am considering moving myself out of this country, I thought it was too good to leave, but I have been proved wrong, and even I with heaps of aussie dollars can’t afford to live here anymore $6.50 before you even get into a taxi – ridiculous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Beware the lucky country – the governments call it that because we have all of the uranium & gas (90% more than the rest of the world combined – makes you think why they want our country so much doesn’t it!!!!)
Home is where you lay your head. Make the best of it anywhere. It’s nice to visit other locations around the world though… All big cities have crime, but you have to know where to stay away from and where it’s safe. Petty crime is high in all U.S. rural areas; same for almost all countries. The worst place I’ve lived (and currently living) is in the Seattle area. Usually no summers to speak of and rainy/overcast most of the time. Best place to live is Hawaii, but it’s very expensive and the petty crime is very high. Wherever one lives, get out, enjoy the area, and meet the people. “Live life simply, so others can simply live.”

Brazil is not good place to live. I know because I am brazilian and I know other parts of the world to compare. The crime is high everywhere. Many people are not educated and there is corruption. I want to move from here. Public health care is free but bad quality. Ugly cities. Heavy rains in summer and dengue fever.But africa, India and most latin american countires are worst than Brazil (except Chile and Argentina)
CAN someone fill me in about NYC ..how easy or hard is it to intergrate in that city ie; finding a job. reasonable living space ect. ..leaving Vancouver ..hate it BOOOORING !!1
As an Australian,although I agree Australia is very pretty it lacks culture,is quite boring in places and is very expensive. Have a trip by all means though. Personally I’m supposed no where in Beitain is on here. What about Bath??? It just oozes history,romance and charm? There is nothing better than walking down those clean,roman streets and heading to the Thermae spa and look at the sunset over the Somerset hills! The UK should be on here!
