Top Ten Places to Live in the World

in Architecture, Featured, History, Interesting Facts, Travel

There are many factors that make the place we live the place we love to call home. Environment, weather, history, politics, economy, infrastructure, social climate, and entertainment all play a part. When choosing a place to live, your decision should be based on what issues are important to you. Finding the right combination of features is the key to loving where you live.

Healthcare and Tolerance – Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Meuse River, The Netherlands

Meuse River, The Netherlands

In 2009 the Netherlands was named as having the best healthcare system in Europe by the Euro Health Consumer Index. Six criterion examined were patient rights and information, e-health, waiting times for treatment, outcomes, range and reach of services provided and pharmaceuticals. The Netherlands is additionally praised for its minimal bureaucracy and patient empowerment.

The Netherlands, particularly Amsterdam, has become infamous for its tolerance of the taboo. The Dutch believe that people should make moral decisions with little interference from government. Marijuana is legal. Tattoo parlors, sex shops, and the red light district draw tourists. Hostels are packed during the peak summer season.

As far as culture, there are famous museums where you can see work by Van Gogh, Vermeer, and Rembrandt. One can learn the story of Anne Frank, relax in beautiful parks and ride a bike almost anywhere. According to Claudio.Ar, “It is said that Amsterdam has more canals than Venice, more cafes than Vienna and more bridges than Paris. The tours let you discover them and other secrets of the city.”

Best Place for Singles – New York City, USA

New York City

Hudson River, New York

In the mood for love? Although the cost of living is still high in New York, it has become slightly more affordable due to the recent economic downturn. In fact with many singles now unemployed, unmarried folks are taking advantage of their severance packages and enjoying all the city has to offer. With 35,000 restaurants, 3,800 bars, and 734 museums there is definitely plenty to do in New York City. The popular dating site, Match.com, has more active accounts in the NYC area than any other locale. Living in New York does, however require a high tolerance for crowds of people.

“The City That Never Sleeps” comes by its title easily. From piano bars to jazz lounges (and a few dozen dives of course), New York’s nightlife keeps the city hopping until early morning hours. Nightclubs like the Marquee feature world famous DJs for the partiers who love to dance. Other locals favor the Gotham Comedy Club, which Frommer’s guide declares New York’s “trendiest and most sophisticated comedy club.”

Whatever your interest, you’re sure to find it in New York City – day or night.

Mild Climate & English Speaking – Malta

Island Sunset

Malta

The island nation just 60 miles from Sicily, Republic of Malta, is a repeated winner of Quality of Life Index awards for best climate.

With a daily average of over five hours of sunshine, mild winters, and hot summers – Malta is considered ideal by many.

Diving, sailing, and colorful festivals abound. Golf and horseback riding are popular pastimes.

There are few sandy beaches and yes – sometimes it does rain on the Maltese islands.

If it’s raining you can head indoors for opera, theater, music, and ballet at the Manoel Theatre in Valletta. The Manoel is the second-oldest theater in Europe.

The government is politically stable in Malta. Cost of living is low. Crime is minimal. Locals are hospitable. Travel is not difficult, despite island status.

If you lived in Malta you could check off each item on list, 101 Things to do while on Holiday in Malta.

Family-Friendly – Virginia, USA

Virginia

Virginia Waterwheel

The state of Virginia has beautiful shorelines and beaches. Virginia is very family and community oriented, with plenty of fairs, festivals, and community events. The people are diverse and friendly. Many of the schools are highly-ranked and offer plenty of extracurricular activities and elective courses to choose from.

Virginia takes the health and safety of its children very seriously. According to the official Virginia government website, $515,405 was awarded to 17 projects that support youth substance abuse and violence prevention programs for 2010.

Low Cost of Living & Retirement – Brazil

Brazil

Sugarloaf Mountain, Rio de Janeiro

Brazil is the largest country in South America and therefore offers a broad range of opportunities for travel and diversity. From the Amazon jungles, to famous beaches, you will find the inhabitants friendly and hospitable. Although the nightlife is well known in Brazil, few are aware that Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro are among the cheapest cities to live in (according to the Economist Intelligence Unit).

Want to pay off debt? Brazil is a good place to retire. Retirement visas are available with proof of income. It is common and legal for permanent residents to apply for Brazilian passports and keep their current citizenships and passports.

Brazilian health care is very good. You do not need to be a citizen to use the national health care system. Patients pay nothing out of pocket for most care. For the highest quality health care private market providers are also available – for a fee. Even so, the fees are much less than purchasing independent health insurance in the U.S. In general, you get more for your money in Brazil.

Due to the well-developed agricultural, mining, manufacturing, and service industries, the economy of Brazil outweighs other countries in South America, and is quickly expanding its presence in international markets.

Simply Beautiful – Belize

Belize

Belize

Belize, considered one of the most beautiful countries in Central America, has it all. Belize touts great beaches, subtropical climate, diverse wildlife, and a low cost of living.

The scuba diving and snorkeling is fabulous. The gorgeous waterfalls underneath the Maya Mountains are rivaled only by the hundreds of colorful species of birds flying the skies.

Rent of a large house in Cayo district is only $300/month. Food at the local markets is very reasonably priced. The official language is English. The Retired Person’s Incentive Program starts at the ripe young age of 45 and allows tax free living.

Consider a snowbird lifestyle when it comes to living in Belize. The wet season is May to October. It rains all the time and there is a chance for hurricanes.

But I’d stay November through April in this beautiful land, which is just where I’d like to be rather than the cold snowy land I call home that time of year.

Stunning Scenery – Cape Town, South Africa

Cape Town

Table Mountain, Cape Town

Cape Town features some of the most beautiful beaches and fascinating attractions in all of Africa. Families enjoy swimming in the warm waters along the False Bay coast, where whale watching is also popular. Kids swarm to Boulders Beach to see the penguins, and for a small fee, even swim with them. The hallmark of Cape Town is Table Mountain, a gigantic slab of sandstone with breathtaking views, trails for hiking, and paragliding for the adventurous. (Cable cars are available for the not-so-adventurous.)

The second most populated city in South Africa; Cape Town is known for being socially tolerant and culturally diverse. This coastal city is mild and rainy during the winter months, but dry and very warm the rest of the year. The bistros and restaurants offer a variety of world class cuisine to satisfy every palate, and are famous for their delicious wines. Clubs, lounges, and other entertainment venues make Cape Town ideal for the musically inclined.

Thanks to the 2010 World Cup, business is booming in Cape Town. The real estate market is also on the upswing as more people relocate to this beautiful coastal city.

Economic Opportunities – Frankfurt, Germany

Frankfurt

Frankfurt, Germany

Those looking for a certain quality of life find their high standards met in Frankfurt, the economic capital of Germany. The Frankfurt Stock Exchange is the largest in Germany, and one of the world’s most important. According to the Mercer Quality of Living survey, Frankfurt has the highest concentration of jobs in Germany, with 922 jobs per 1,000 residents.

Frankfurt inhabitants enjoy their city for more than its economic security. The museums, historical sites, and shopping districts are popular with the locals as well as tourists. Frankfurt is easy to travel in and out of, with one of the busiest airports in the world. Frankfurt Central Station is one of the biggest train stations in Europe, and few can resist the allure of the Autobahn. The views along the Main River are lovely, and Frankfurt is home to a number of beautiful landmarks such as the Imperial Cathedral, and the 50-acre Palmengarten flower garden.

The cost of living is high, but is compensated with a low unemployment rate, easy transportation for business trips, and the fact that it is an industrial and financial powerhouse.  Germany’s businesses are booming.

Most Romantic – Paris, France

Eiffel Tower, Paris

Eiffel Tower, Paris

The air in Paris simply breathes romance. Not only is the enchanting ambience the perfect setting for romance, (who can see the Eiffel Tower without thinking of L’amour?) the cozy bistros and dimly lit restaurants are ideal for couples in love.

Paris is not just for lovers; its rich heritage and stunning architecture draw millions. The Louvre, Palace of Versailles, and Notre Dame are just a few of the beautiful buildings that grace the Paris skyline. An incredible array of paintings and art are sure to please museum goers.

As the fashion capital of the world, Paris is home to some of the most popular designers. Those looking for a career in fashion couldn’t find a more fitting place to study or work. The drawback for Parisians is a high cost of living. The good news is- Paris features some of Europe’s largest corporations, and researchers expect an increase in employment opportunities in the future. So for those who can swing it, the comfort and quality of the French life is a truly unforgettable experience. Not to mention, absolutely delicious.

Sizzling and Sexy – Miami, Florida USA

Miami

Miami, Florida

Miami is known as the “Magic City” for good reason. With the sensual Latin flavor combined with its tropical location, Miami is home to an eclectic group of fun-loving people. Singles flock to Miami for the beaches and exciting nightlife, and then discover attractions and career opportunities that offer more than they were expecting.

As the “Gateway to Latin America”, Miami is a city of diverse ethnicities. This sunny city is bursting with new developments, has surprisingly low rent and taxes, and an exceptional education system at the University of Miami.

Miami ranks highly with the Globalization and World Cities Study Group and Network, which rates each city’s importance to the international economy. Professionals work in a number of fields including tourism, trade, and international banking. Sports and recreation enthusiasts adore Miami for the wide variety of watersports and boating activities. Everything from snorkeling to sailing, kayaking to kitesurfing; Miami’s beaches offer it all. For landlubbers, Miami features rock climbing walls, golf courses, and tennis courts. Wherever you travel, wherever you call home, remember to make the best of where you are. The people you meet, friends you make, experiences you acquire – those are the things that make life worth living.

I live in Queensland Australia, and apart from the beautiful weather, amazing scenery, and the diversity of cultures, we have amazing opportunities for growth both as a people and a nation. I agree that the places you have listed are amazing as I have been to many of them, but no matter where you are living, enjoy everything it has to offer.

How does any list of “Top Places” not take into account the little matter of crime?

Brazil? South Africa? Crime runs rampant in these countries, especially in/near big cities. Come on, at least do a little research before posting.

Reply

Terra July 22, 2010 at 3:11 pm

@Seriously – This is a very good point. However, Brazil and South Africa also offer features not found elsewhere. This is why I stated that one must consider the facets that are important to them.

dan November 5, 2010 at 11:53 am

I live in South Africa, and crime is not bad. maybe yours in USA , Britian. the only diffrence is, our media is controled by no one so every body sees whats going on. Other countries media is controled so that the country won’t look bad. so get a life

Reply

Tell him dan!! I love this place and it’s unique diversity. You want to focus on the bad (that exists in every city), you go right ahead.. Your loss!

Reply

Megan December 2, 2010 at 4:05 am

I have lived in South Africa my entire life, and I assure you it isn’t half as bad as people make out. The numbers you see are all from the rural township areas, and I’m sure no European immigrant would be living there. The urban areas are mostly white-populated, and I have never been a victim of crime. It’s a stunning country, and I certainly don’t plan on leaving any time soon :)
PS. I live in Somerset West

That’s because you are near Capetown, which many of us know is the best city on earth :-) I’m a Scotsman in New Zealand, a fantastic but boring country with no ozone layer. I lived in Johannesburg for 4 years (as we as all over Europe, Australia and USA over the last 13 years) and I know from area to area and person to person the perception of crime is sharply contrasted. I’d love to return to SA but always get worried I won’t get work since I am white (and my partner is black Zimbabwean)

As voted by the U.N. 7 years in a row as the best country to live in by low crime rates, economic opportunity, cultural diversity and many other reasons, I’m wondering why Canada was left off this list. Isn’t Miami one of the most dangerous cities in the U.S. to live?

Reply

Terra July 22, 2010 at 3:14 pm

If only the list were the top 20 places to live in the world. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Scott. As far as those that choose Miami – perhaps they are more interested in partying than in healthcare.

Reply

Jeffery July 22, 2010 at 4:12 pm

It’s obvious from the list you were born and raised in the USA. Miama is far from the top in the world for Sizzling and Sexy. For one, Montreal, Quebec, Canada trumps it easily. If anyone disagrees then they obviously haven’t been there. Why sacrifice the healthcare perk for partying when it’s both offered in Montreal? Montreal has been called Disneyland for Adults, and for good reason. With multi-cultural diversity, the majority of the population bilingual, a smaller percent less than 60 (11% for Montreal compared to 21% in Miami, because nobody find grandma and grandpa sexy in a swimsuit) and almost 5 times the population, how is Miami better?

Reply

Terra July 28, 2010 at 4:21 pm

@Jeffery- yes I was born and raised in the US. I am also well traveled. My parents own an island in Canada and I have a grandmother (and lots of relatives) in Florida. I’ve been to Canada and Florida many, many times. Personally, I’d live in Florida. That’s the great thing about opinion articles – I get to share MY opinion. No one is stopping you from writing yours.

Reply

Nikki September 23, 2011 at 10:12 pm

Terra,

I have to say that I think that your article is wonderful and I appreciate you writing it. My husband and I are US citizens who currently reside in Japan and are looking for our retirement country. We are pretty well traveled ourselves but still have SO MANY places that we would like to visit. It may be that we will never find just one that suits our purposes, but I really enjoy hearing about places that other US citizens (As we have a similar basis for comparison) recommend.

I would like to mention that I think that it is sad that every time anybody decides to put themselves and their opinions out there on the internet for the assistance and use of others that there are so many nasty nay-sayers out there who can’t wait to pounce on any little perceived slight and spew forth negativity. Shame on them all! Great Job Terra!!

Reply

Graham January 2, 2011 at 4:18 am

Maybe you should be asking your friends and family who have fled to our beaches this winter why Miami is better than Quebec, Jeffery. All I see is car after car after car full of people with a Quebec license plate on the back this Christmas season.

You can’t tell me you truly enjoy a country where the weather is unbearable half the year. Been there, done that. Moved to Miami, enough said.

By the way.. the nightlife in Montreal isn’t that great. Not nearly comparable to Miami and Miami Beach over the past few years.

Reply

caitlin January 19, 2011 at 8:43 am

it’s not immoral, it’s a different way of living. half the indigenous groups in africa&asia don’t wear clothes– are they immoral? and actually legalizing prostitution was one of the best ideas Amsterdam has had, now they can regulate it &make sure that the people participating are in there on their own accords, are of age, don’t have STDs, etc. The amount of underage sex trafficking has gone down tremendously since they legalized prostitution.

Reply

CTJ Bush April 29, 2011 at 9:15 am

Yes, Caitlin,
it’s immoral.
That means
IMMORAL –
adjective
1.
violating moral principles; not conforming to the patterns of conduct usually accepted
Besides, it’s not the clothes thing;
it’s the sex like dogs in the street thing.

Reply

Alicia November 1, 2011 at 6:27 am

CTJ Bush- Moral principles, based on who’s principles? Yours? Everything one has their own standard of morality and just because it defers from yours doesn’t mean its ‘wrong’. So calm down because your little definition there only applies to the “patterns of conduct usually accepted” of the majority of Western countries, but if you were a little more cultured and well travelled, you would understand that not all cultures have the same social standard as you, so stop acting like you know everything.

Reply

ctj bush November 14, 2011 at 10:30 am

Alicia, my morals are based on God’s book, the Bible.
Can you find a better source of morals?
BTW, learn to spell and get a grammar checker.
It’s whose, not who’s.
Your wrote: “Everything one has their own standard of morality … WHAT.
So if a person is a pedophile then molesting children is OK?
It’s differs, not defers.
There are other mistakes, but let’s move on.
I am as “cultured” as the next person.
I have traveled extensively, speak three languages and have several degrees in subjects you couldn’t understand if you tried.
I don’t know everything, but my opinion is just as important as yours.

Melvin v.d Tuin January 19, 2011 at 7:10 pm

If you don’t mind Anne, i would like to comment on your post. Amsterdam, the city where i live is is indeed quite liberal. There is a big red light district, yes you can pay and have sex. But isn’t that the same as any big city in the world? We only gave it a place, to make sure it can be watched and regulated, taking it of the streets. Same goes for marihuana. There is scientific proof that its a less harmful drug than alcohol, and its more controlled by providing it in specialized shops. I would like to make a note that i don’t do drugs, period. And that restaurant where girls serve you naked, not entirely true. they serve you in bikini’s, including top. Its a big tourist attraction. The liberal mindset makes it possible to be yourself, gay, straigt, cross-dresser, black or white. That makes it a very nice place to live for me!

Reply

nia January 28, 2011 at 11:24 am

There is no place like that in Amsterdam, I lived there and the only restaurant somewhat like Hooters in the usa, is one where the waitresses wear bikinis. Not immoral at all. Get your head out of the gutter.

South Africa? highest rape rates inthe world, totally unsafe for women at night,Brazil ,gee the highest murder rates in the world by a long way, something like 130,000 per year , you have got to be kidding , Love Paris but sooo expensive ,Australia no guns not bad, Canada really nice, Don’t know who made this list but great Places to visit but to live there I don’t think so, And whats wrong with naked chiclks in amsterdam? immoral ?? They don’t have the hang ups and are proud of how they look.

hi..i understand your point however we are talking about “best place to live in the world”…do you think you can bring your kids on those kinds of restaurant and see naked ladies at amsterdam???do you think you can have your kids see people taking marijuana legally???think about that…how would you teach good values to children if that is the kind of environment they grow up with???i defenitely agree with what steve said about amsterdam..as what i’ve said the place itself looks nice as a tourist spot but not a place to LIVE IN…thanks! (“,)

Reply

caitlin January 19, 2011 at 8:40 am

@angelica-
raise your children right and it won’t matter… c’mon now there are kids being raised in much more terrible situations then “Amsterdam” and they’ve made it thru.. if you don’t want your children seeing naked women, then don’t take them to that restaurant? I personally believe it’s extremely important to raise kids around people that are tolerant, have different morals, ideas, blah blah blah. and who cares if your kids see people smoking weed legally? i’d rather my kid smoke weed then half the other shit kids get into these days. my main point is, if you raise your children properly, it shouldn’t matter.

Reply

nia January 28, 2011 at 11:22 am

why do you accept an opinion from someone who is obviously paranoid about nakedness and hooks is up to immorality??and yet has never been to Amsterdam, no idea if this is true or not and willing to believe it hook line and sinker. There is no place like that in Amsterdam, I lived there and the only restaurant somewhat like Hooters in the usa, is one where the waitresses wear bikinis. Not immoral at all. the redlightdistrict is only 2 streets, in any American big city there are more sexshops or heroin hookers in backalleys. Hooters is American based btw, but in Amsterdam not hidden away. Please dont base your opinion of Amsterdam on a typical one day onetrack tourist experience.

They had to produce this list by category and they did a generally good job…
…except for Amsterdam. “Healthcare & Tolerance”? More like “Welfare & Perverts”.
Amsterdam is a socialist welfare city\state full of fags and bloodthirsty muzzies.
That’s what “tolerance” gets you.

@Steve Wow. You’re ignorant! I’d rather live in Amsterdam than in much of the south in the US! Good for them that they’re liberal, tolerant, and safe! FAR better than than the STIFLING, JUDGMENTAL, BIBLE-THUMPING IDIOTS RUINING THIS country! How about the US is more like “Dumb and BAckwards?” Good for Amsterdam if they’re “socialist”! At least, THEY don’t need to worry about the DAMN rich feeding off them like stupid PARASITES like they do HERE! I’m SOOOO SICK of the idiotic religious right here! Give me Amsterdam over Southern US ANY DAY! And I HOPE and PRAY that one day all of Europe AND the US follow their example! See if your stupid “intolerance” gets you anything better! Hope you never lying dying in the street praying for healthcare only to be turned away at the door like it’s actually happened to others here! See if you desire your “intolerance” then!

That’s funny, because lot of my friends had guns when I lived in Australia from 2003 to 2006. Same as in New Zealand so these countries are not as safe from firearms as people make out. I remember hearing gunshots a few times in Sydney too(though, mostly western suburbs I admit). OK, but it is nothing like SA (I did live in Hillbrow, JoBurg though) or the USA where I would not say the majority on average have guns, but a large number overall.
Oh yea, Australia is bureaucratic as hell too, just like USA and UK. Opening a bank account or getting your tax number is an all day affair, total pain in the ass. THis is one area where NZ (nanny state) has it’s shit together.

Why does everyone have multi-culturalism as a pro when it’s really a source for problems?
Sure, some elements of other cultures that resemble the majority can be healthy, but to much just causes crime, distrust between citizens and problems.

I mean, look at London and Paris… I’d take Tokyo before these two any day of the week.

I would not include Paris among the 10 ten places to live. Yes it is beautiful and there are lovely scenes here, but there are cities in France that are less expensive, also lovely and more clean, welcoming and friendly. Paris is romantic for a vacation, but to live here.. it is extremely different!! At times very difficult, full of pollution and many other problems.

Also it is “Eiffel.”

I have to agree with the comments about the crime. It should be a given that the best place in the world to live in would include not having a high chance, statistically, of being raped, assaulted, robbed, or killed…I’ve lived in about 20 countries and the ones that stand out to me are:
Vienna: If you adore classical music and a high quality of life (voted #1 quality of life last year)
Tuscany, Italy: If you adore food and rolling hills
Calcutta, India: For the most hospitable people
Accra, Ghana: For the friendliest people (there’s a difference)
Istanbul, Turkey: For its combination of exoticism and the comforts of home
Berlin, Germany: For its relative inexpensiveness and interesting history
Jerusalem, Israel: For the religious and archaeolgical buffs

And cheers to NYC, it’s my favorite city in the States.

Brazil is a beautiful country with a much improved economy. They did have economic and inflationary issues in the 90′s. Unfortunately, crime continues to be a problem in Rio, although the police are taking a more aggresive approach with crime in the favelas (slums).

I am brazilian, but have lived in several places around the world. Brazilian big cities are as safe and dangerous as any other big city in the world. Just use common sense to stay safe. People generally get impressed by the news about favelas/slums. Stay out of these areas, and you’re okay. The public health system isn’t great, but it’s not bad either. I’ve seen worse systems in so-called “developed” countries. Private insurance plans are reasonably affordable and offer good coverage. I just have complaints about the lack of infrastructure at some places, and the income inequality, which generates lots of other problems, but these issues are being tackled and getting solved, step by step. Hopefully in 15-20 years we’ll be able to say Brazil is a fully developed country.

I currently live in Arnhem in The Netherlands. But I would love to live in Amsterdam. I find it weird that people are disliking Amsterdam because soft drugs are legal and there is a red light district. As mentioned before, making some drugs & prostitution legal was only for the better. And from my own experience, growing up with many friends who have smoked or are still smoking pod, I can only say that it hasn’t effected me at all. Using the stuff is your own decision. I have no reason to use it, and because of that I haven’t used it. For me, the only negative thing about Amsterdam is that it is currently known as “Gay Capitol”, I am less keen on that. Anyway, one should go to the city and form its own opinion :)

South-Africa’s crime rate is high, mostly due to poverty. I have been to Amsterdam, Miami and London, and loved it, but you HAVE to visit South-Africa esp Capetown. You will form an entire different opinion. PS – we do NOT walk around naked and ride on elephants, sorry…

Reply

Csandster November 30, 2011 at 5:05 am

Yeah I agree the South African crime rate is high but I wouldn’t blame poverty for that because in terms of the richest countries in the Africa is concerned South Africa is the richest. On the other hand the difference between the rich and the poor is bigger then most places around the world and why is everyone making a fuss about SA as if their countries are way way better then SA. How could people survive there if it’s as bad as your’ll say it is? People buy too much as to what the media says about certain places, I’ve never been to any Brazilian city so it’s hard for me to tell whether it’s as dangerous as people make it out to be. I guess different strokes for different folks some day you will be mugged in a place you consider the safest in the world just because people are naive and ignorant at the same time.

Oh yes, Malta!
If you like to see rare protected birds bieng shot out of the sky just for fun by pea-brained hunters while getting full support of politicians for fear of losing votes, then Malta is definitely the place to visit.
If you don’t mind fainting when receiving your energy bill then Malta is nice for you.
If you like the beaches but won’t mind noise pollution of sorts from unregulated fireworks, loud music from parties, car stereos, people who love to shout when they’re supposed to be talking, noisy car silencers etc then Malta would be a peach for ya.
Prices are unregulated and when shopowners get a hint that you’re a tourist, the price rockets sky high.
The average Maltese household is very clean from the inside but the rest of the island is plain filthy with countryside getting rapidly ruined going to speculators due to an obviously corrupt permit system.
It’s pitiful for it’s such a pretty little island too… a damn shame!

I think you people have missed the overall explanation here. Terra is not telling you “hey look at these cities, this is where you should live” NO she is simply saying if you are this type of person and have this type of personality, then this area of the world would be a nice place for you to look at and maybe even live at. So all you people arguing about the bad in these places should stop and realize that your not being forced to live anywhere, your simply reading a persons well thought out opinion about these places and what is so good about them. Lastly I think one of the places I would choose would be brazil. But not for retirement simply for the calmness and tranquil it offers.

I have lived in South Africa may whole life and I do not know a single person who has not had a crime committed against them. I’m had my house broken into numerous times, attempted highjacking and friends murdered. Its a beautiful country but its unfortunately ruined by that percentage of the population that rape and murder everyone else without any fear of the law because there is none. Unless people actually face up to the crime sitution and stop calling it “not bad” then it’ll never stop. Oh and I live in a secure boomed off suburb in Joburg far from the townships. This happens all over the place not just in the townships. But obviously people will respond and call me unpatriotic and tell me to leave but at least I’m telling potential people considering living here the truth about the place. And by the way there is zero healthcare, public transport, education(unless you really pay for it), electricity and water cuts at least once a week, potholes all over the roads, taxi drivers who will literally kill you if you don’t let them in your lane and the most arrogant, unfriendly nation you’ll ever experience. Go somewhere lese or you’ll be very sorry. And like I said I am a South African.

Reply

Catherine August 7, 2011 at 1:41 pm

Thank you for your honesty. That all sounds right to me, and what about the farmers who had farms there for centuries who were murdered by blacks there, and to my knowledge nothing was ever done about it. What about those farms that were confiscated by the so-called government?
For me South Africa may have scenic beauty, but there is too much that is uncivilized and dangerous. Who wants to live some place like THAT? Not me. I want to experience living in a country that is safe, with a good climate, a secure economy and strong banking system, and where officials are intelligent and reliable.

How can people create a list of TOP places to live in the world if they’ve NEVER BEEN EVERYWHERE IN THE WORLD? Doesn’t make much sense does it? Either edit the title or don’t give people “world” advice without experience. That’s like the blind leading the blind. How can I tell you there isn’t a chair in front of you if I can’t see it either?
This article should be, “Places I would recommend from experience,” because in reality you do NOT know the best places to live in the WORLD.

I’ve done a heck of a lot of traveling in my life, having spent considerable time on every continent (including an Antarctic expedition following in Shackleton’s foot steps) and I’ve always considered Florida to be one of the worst places. Most of the Southern US is pretty rough as far as the people are concerned, and Florida is definitely not an exception. Yes obviously there are very dangerous places in South Africa.
Lets just get this clear and leave it at this.
I have lived in Cape Town my whole life and there is nothing I do not about this breathe taking city. Yes there are dangerous places even in Cape Town. Guess what?
Every educated Capetonian knows which areas have high levels of crime and we avoid them most of the time. Besides most of the bad areas in Cape Town (Western Cape) are safe during the day.
Then if you looking for the vibes and the parties. The glitz and the glam. Peace and beauty. Long story short if a good life is what you are looking for then come to Cape Town.
If you can earn R25 000 per month or higher you are set for your best time of your life. Espeically if you are below 30years of age. No doubt! All you foreigners do the math because you can learn something from this!
Bottom line Cape Town is a hidden secret and no matter what, deep down inside the Mother City will always be my true home on this planet!

Johann Fouche August 23, 2011 at 4:51 am

Totally agree with you Saul. Cape Town is a very special place and in my opinion one of the safest places I’ve been to. Keep in mind I never go down-town or to townships. I feel much safer walking around at night in Cape town then I ever did in London or some parts of Paris. (victim of crime in London & Paris before) But Gauteng (Pretoria & Johannesburg are probably of the most dangerous cities in the world. Cape town is run by a different government meaning – less crime, more jobs, less racial conflict and happy citizens. Gauteng is sooo corrupt almost everyday you hear in the news about some kind of tender deal going to politicians friends who barely have a high school qualification.
Yes the whole of SA is super special… I love South Africa but all I wish for her is to prosper and put all her troubles aside…. Solution to that: Total new government – DA

on the minus side thailand is corrupt and it touches you now and then. they political scene is sillier than most. the country is literally for sale. you could buy almost anything here. most of the tourist destinations here are trashed and the thais do little to clean it up.

The large amount of wealthy bankers is contrasted by loads of homeless, junkies and unemployed. In Germany, cities like Munich and particularly Hamburg offer a higher standart of living, a nicer atmosphere and a higher diversity with makes for a lively community!

The coolest thing about the US is that you can literally find almost every type of climate and ecosystem on the planet, all in a single first-world, English-speaking, culturally diverse country. Most of our western states are bigger than many European countries. Too bad we have to pay for our own health insurance. Oh well, next week I’m taking a drive out to remote eastern Oregon to camp with my wife under the stars on a beautiful high desert landscape, on National Forest land with nobody else within a 20-mile radius of us, where I’ll happily shoot my arsenal of perfectly legal firearms to my heart’s content. Go USA!

My local hospital, doctor and dentist are within walking distance and healthcare is free at source. It’s in the driest area of the country but has enough water.

I can not own my own handgun or hunting rifle. There are other problems in the area too but I have a wonderful wife and family. I am happy.

ThePaganSun August 24, 2011 at 3:43 am

I agree. Most people are always gonna see the positives if they like where they live while others see only the negative. Obviously, EVERY country has BOTH and people need to learn to see that. For example, my family is Puerto Rican. I was born in NY and raised for almost my entire life in NJ and almost NEVER felt American. I’m not patriotic at all and instead feel closer to the European lifestyle. Most people will talk of the “American Dream,” but to me it feels quite hollow. Don’t get me wrong, there are many good things about living here. I love the democracy and standard of living, but it’s far too capitalist for me, (the gap in rich and poor is spreading by the day) too Christian/religious (especially in the South) which is quite intolerant and impedes progress, and there’s barely any history older than colonial times. I’d far rather live in a more moderately capitalist and secular country with more history. But like I said, each place has their pros and cons and this is MY opinion of the country I was born in and lived for my 25 years of life.

Also, people may “love” owning and shooting guns and that’s all fine and dandy for hunting. But when they’re so readily available to anyone who even looks of age can buy one without any training, licenses, or background information (What if the person had a history of gun violence?) like in many Southern states with their “gun shows,” THAT’S when things get very dangerous and THAT’S why gun violence is so high in our country. Our many school shootings were no coincidence. I guess we’ll never learn. Consider yourself lucky then that it’s different in the UK. If no one is allowed to own guns, then no one can shoot anyone. Or the ones that do are already criminals by just possessing one which helps in the process of targeting suspects.

hilarious that the writer thinks that Cape Town ‘offers some of the most beautiful beaches in Africa’. Im not surprised though as most white foreigners think South Africa is the only country in Africa worth visiting because of its large white population.

I wonder if the writer has ever travelled to other parts of Africa to make such bogus claims. Yes Cape Town is beautiful but does it have the best beaches in Africa? Certainly NOT!!!

The beaches in Zanzibar makes Cape Town look like a tourist poop ground. A simple google image search of Zanzibar beaches simply confirms that :

Cape Town = overcrowded touristy, crime ridded piss haven and shark hellhole,

Zanzibar = PARADISE

Zanzibar aggg please!!!!
If you want beautiful beaches in africa go to Mauritius. It’s safe, stable government and the south and west will make anybody believe they are in heaven.

How on earth is Cape town dangerous???????????
Now if you want to risk your life please go to Zanzibar. You’ll pray for your life even before you’re in that hellhole.

California 30 years ago was a paradise! But now there are NO jobs, the TAXES are unbelievable, health care doesnt exist , and because of the huge numbers of uneducated peasants coming from Mexico illegaly, crime is rampant! California is PARADISE LOST!!

super lame list, I have lived in several of those places – rushing to find something better. Did not mention the crime in Brazil the struggles to get anything done in Paris… Seriously, make a list for grown ups, we are not looking for little adventure.
BAD article.

I was just wondering what you all think of NEW ZEALAND? My sister is planning to go there, with her husbaqnd and 2 young kids, leaving close family/friends behind.

I don’t particularly like the town i live in, in the UK but i have lived there all my life (have travelled lots with holidays, which you never get to see the bad side of a city/country) and the most important thing to me is family/friends and bringing my kids up with their grandparents/family/friends.

Eventually i would like to travel more and maybe live elsewhere. Ideally if i had enough money i would like to travel the world, with my kids and husband when there schooling has finished!

any comments?!!

C’mon guys, there are no perfect place for all! It really depends of your level of education, life style and a lot off different facts that made us UNIQUE!
PS.: in my opinion the best place to leave it is on board of a sail boat and traveling to know a great number of perfect places…

Hello everyone,

At 50, I am at a crossroads. Do not feel the age or act it(;-))and am pursuing my art dream. My question to you is, where in the country or world would any of you recommend to both be able to find employment AND that is artist friendly….as well as being safe, healthy, vibrant and diverse. Thanks in advance~

why do you all compete with each other – surely where ever you feel is the place that satisfies your desires etc is the place that is yours to keep special. We all live on this Earth together, & what a beautiful planet it is. Its gotta be better than some of the other planets out there.

Hilariously bad list. At least call it ” Top Ten places in the world that I’ve heard of/visited”". Obviously a very USA biased list, Australia has a far higher standard of living than the USA, amazing climate, low crime compared to places you’ve listed and has nothing featured, and the well known extremely livable nations of Norway, Canada and Sweden also are not mentioned, possibly due to the cold weather. Surprised you didn’t throw San Francisco and LA in there as well.

Oh so I am lucky that I lives in Amsterdam for some years now, but if I have to choose between Amsterdam and Paris, I would choose for Amsterdam. Paris is only nice for vacations, I think.

I don’t know about Paris being the most romantic… I notice that most people seem to believe this and it is simply not true. Maybe one of the dirtiest places you could possibly live, I think people would think differently about the “romanticism” of this city if they took a walk down the dust, garbage and cigarette butt covered streets or strolled through some of the parks that are mysteriously weed-free and mostly covered with drab sand-looking walkways packed with so many chemicals to control weeds from disrupting the little amount of greenery that is actually there that pets aren’t allowed; most likely because they are at ground level with these chemicals, not because Parisian parks and rec think that the citizens are irresponsible in cleaning up after their pets. Oh, and then there’s the crazy amount of people trying to scam or beg or otherwise harass you around virtually all of the popular traditionally thought to be “romantic” areas. Then there’s the “romantic” two hour wait in line to get up the Eiffel tower any time of they day, or the “romantic” body odors filling half of the subway cars that you ride because many individuals in this town don’t seem to take hygiene too seriously… Then again the water bills rack up insanely quickly if you ever live here, so actually I understand the less common frequency of bathing by some inhabitants. Ok enough ranting. Bottom line- Paris is nice to visit and has some great food and really kind people regardless of stereotypical views of the “rude Parisian,” but the idea that it is some kind of romantic city to visit and live in is also a stereotypical and really silly, illusory conclusion to come to in my opinion.

Hi everyone,

Nice bickering, the reason I asked my question and ended up in this blog is because I already live in the best city in the world (Sydney) yet I somehow feel that we are being overrun by a different way of life because of the constant competition between people.

Us Australians (well the good old Gen X that didn’t do anything wrong, just inherited it), we value freedom, hard work, back-breaking work actually, we love all human beings (no matter of race or colour – religion is still up for discussion). however everyone thinks because it’s so good here, we have it easy. This is not the case. You cannot buy a house in Australia (not even a shack) for under $500,000 (and yes, we are $1.05 amercian dollars so super expensive) our averages wages are less than $50,000 per year, so while it is a great place to live, you will never actually be able to get ahead financially. The money in this city belongs to the top 10% of all the world – why not – ask the richest guy in each of your countries where they would buy property – Australia is the answer.

I feel shitty that out country is being taken over by immigrants plainly because of the minerals in the ground. When I grew up (10 yrs ago) there were more immigrants than Australians in my year at school. None of these people ever wanted me to give up my Australian attitude or way of life, they embraced it. I can only hope that these girls/boys who were treated so equally by us during these years will treat us with the same respect in the years to come as they prosper and take over by numbers. No single being is better than anyone else. Why we think otherwise is beyond me.

Anyway off the topic – Just think about where you want to live before you make any drastic moves. We have people dying everyday in attempt at a better life here in Australia. Believe me, medical benefits are only good if the hospitals can actually get to you in time, and if someone cares. at the moment, no-one does, so please be careful before travelling here.

PS. For the first time in my life I am considering moving myself out of this country, I thought it was too good to leave, but I have been proved wrong, and even I with heaps of aussie dollars can’t afford to live here anymore $6.50 before you even get into a taxi – ridiculous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Beware the lucky country – the governments call it that because we have all of the uranium & gas (90% more than the rest of the world combined – makes you think why they want our country so much doesn’t it!!!!)

Home is where you lay your head. Make the best of it anywhere. It’s nice to visit other locations around the world though… All big cities have crime, but you have to know where to stay away from and where it’s safe. Petty crime is high in all U.S. rural areas; same for almost all countries. The worst place I’ve lived (and currently living) is in the Seattle area. Usually no summers to speak of and rainy/overcast most of the time. Best place to live is Hawaii, but it’s very expensive and the petty crime is very high. Wherever one lives, get out, enjoy the area, and meet the people. “Live life simply, so others can simply live.”

Brazil is not good place to live. I know because I am brazilian and I know other parts of the world to compare. The crime is high everywhere. Many people are not educated and there is corruption. I want to move from here. Public health care is free but bad quality. Ugly cities. Heavy rains in summer and dengue fever. But africa, India and most latin american countires are worst than Brazil (except Chile and Argentina)

As an Australian, although I agree Australia is very pretty it lacks culture,is quite boring in places and is very expensive. Have a trip by all means though. Personally I’m supposed no where in Beitain is on here. What about Bath??? It just oozes history, romance and charm? There is nothing better than walking down those clean, roman streets and heading to the Thermae spa and look at the sunset over the Somerset hills! The UK should be on here!
