How to be a Transparent Blogger, Keep Readers Happy, and Keep the FTC Off Your Back

Why do you blog? Is it because you have something to say? Because you want an audience? Because you want to make money? There's nothing wrong with any of those blogging motivations, and you can even have all three! One of the best, and simplest, things you can do to increase your audience, build more trust in your blogging community, and make more money blogging is to be transparent.

Let's take a look at what transparent blogging is, how you can do it, and how transparency can help you grow your blog.

What is Transparency?

Basically transparency means full visibility -- you're not trying to hide anything. In other words, if your company CEO were to write for the company blog under their own name and share their honest thoughts that would be relatively transparent. On the other hand, if that CEO were to then post a comment on that blog post under a different name to make it look like positive customer feedback, that would not be transparent -- it would be deceitful. Transparency is about being as open and honest as possible with your clients, customers, or audience, and doing so whether or not it always paints you in the most positive light. Continue Reading →

WordPress Weak?

There is little argument that Wordpress is terrific software. Arguably the best aspect of the software is its price – Wordpress is shareware, but that may also be its limiting factor.

Wordpress
Wordpress is a blogging platform designed by Askimet. It was released as shareware and upgrades, plug-ins and other utilities are offered constantly to help the design further along. Wordpress is one of the most popular shareware programs and its versatility and ease of use make it immensely popular with amateurs and professionals alike. Wordpress is arguably the most popular blogging platform, but it is also the source of many headaches and a few cross words.

Problems with Wordpress
One of the primary issues bloggers discover with Wordpress is the sheer number of spam comments and some serious security issues. This is not too surprising considering the program is free to everyone, including those who would pick it apart to find loopholes and backdoors into sites. These security issues have raised more than a few eyebrows and some have gone so far as to call Wordpress weak.

Wordpress Weak?
But before anyone gets too carried away panning Wordpress, even its critics take note of the amazing features the platform offers and the constant solutions and solvents to all the issues that arise. Even Shoemoney, who’s been known to pick on Wordpress from time to time, has come out publicly to announce that he strongly supports Wordpress and has done what he can to help fix various bugs he finds. He’s also urged the hacking experts out there to actually contribute help to the design rather than stating how simple it would be to fix this or that. Continue Reading →

WordPress v. Blogger

Blogging is becoming a major internet medium not only for those who enjoy sharing their personal thoughts and experiences, but for internet marketers seeking to establish additional internet presence. As the blogging becomes more prevalent, bloggers are faced with a decision: Should they be blogging on Wordpress or Blogger?

Blogger
Blogger is a blog setup and hosted by the website Blogger.com. It has somewhat limited options as far as plug-ins and designs, but is very easy to get up and running. It is also free to get started as all you need is internet access. There are no domains to purchase, no hosting fees to pay and no site to create. Open an account and get started blogging – it’s simple.

Of course using Blogger is more limiting than other choices, including Wordpress. There are tradeoffs for the simplicity and ease of use and the shortcomings are in design and professionalism. Blogger is great for casual users, but is lacking the professional feel many seek or need. Continue Reading →

Internet Blogs

What started as simple online journals has become an expansive industry. Blogs are a special kind of website dedicated to a more casual presentation of information. They can be written conversationally, with more emphasis on opinion and commentary than a more specialized report. The internet is the ideal location for this style of writing, so it’s no wonder blogs are quickly becoming a favored style of website.

Simple

To design an entire site can be complicated and time consuming. Pages must be constructed and changes are not always rapid. A blog can be designed in a matter of hours, and adding new content or making changes is simple. In many cases, it doesn’t even require any coding or software knowledge.

Beginners are using blogs to share experiences or thoughts online, and professionals have taken the blog well beyond this point. Blogs now are as fully developed as websites with pages, archives, links and feedback features, but are still easier to build and maintain. Blog designs are also easier to modify when the mood strikes – especially if you’re using a template. Continue Reading →
