I have already listed a few weird things about Reddit, and here’s a follow-up listing some more things Redditors themselves keep wondering about:

Where do my saved threads go?

Why do the vote totals fluctuate by about ± 3 votes when you reload the page?

What’s the red envelope next to my username? Why is it red but sometimes empty when clicked?

How do I add formatting to my comment?

Why does a dot sometimes show up where the score should be?

How can I filter submissions on Reddit to ignore those I didn’t like?

How do I filter comments to a story?

What does it mean that the submission number is colored?

1. Where do my saved threads go?

There is an option to save the item under each link on Reddit. But many people wonder where those links are saved.

“Saved” category can be found when clicked on “More” link on the front page:

2.Why do the vote totals fluctuate by about ± 3 votes when you reload the page?

There are two possible explanations of that (the second one is the one that occurs more often):

Caching. Not all cache servers have the most current count. On some occasions, every refresh shows a different count.

Reddit adds small random numbers of up and down votes to the displayed totals to thwart spam bots and karma whores. It’s easy to see with Commentroversy Greasemonkey script

3. What’s the red envelope next to my username? Why is it red but sometimes empty when clicked?

The envelope next to your username becomes red once one of your comments has been replied by someone.

Sometimes it can be red but showing nothing when clicked. It means the commenter was banned or he deleted the reply.

4. How do I add formatting to my comment?

Use Markdown syntax explained in detail here; here are most commonly used cases (to see it, click “help” under the comment box):

5. Why does a dot sometimes show up where the score should be?

It is explained in the official Reddit FAQ. In short, just give it some time

6. How can I filter submissions on Reddit to ignore those I didn’t like?

You can set the preferences to never show you again the story you disliked:

7. How do I filter comments to a story?

There are a couple of ways to filter comments other members didn’t like:

Install this Greasemonkey script to see comments disliked by many members in a lower font size:

Set the preferences to hide comment lower the specified score:

8. What does it mean that the submission number is colored?

When a submission’s number is colored, it means it’s reached the #1 spot on reddit. Clicking on this number will take you to a running list of all the #1 reddit links (explained here).

There is a danger of the internet going obsolete soon. That sounds bad but if you hear of the alternative, you will be thrilled.

That option could be “the grid.” The grid is expected to be “lightning” fast. How long does it take to download a feature film now? An hour? Two hours? Grid will be capable of doing it within seconds.

It does feel like a sci-fi movie but this is a fact and is the latest spinoff from the creator of the web, Cern, the particle physics center. They could outdo their previous creation by a million times, with the creation of the Grid, which they say comes with the power needed to transmit holographic images; allows instant online gaming with thousands of players and also offers high definition video telephony for just the price of a local call.

While the web is a service that allows sharing of information over the internet; the Grid allows sharing of data storage capacity and computer power over the internet.

The speed of the Grid is said to be 10000 times faster than the internet. Researchers give an example that proves the power of the Grid when compared to the internet. It has been used to help in designing new drugs for malaria, the fatal disease that kills approximately 1m people each year. In a search for new drugs against malaria, it came up with 140m compounds – a task that would have taken an internet-linked PC 420 years. These amazing results reveal the tremendous unimaginable power of the Grid.

David Briton, a professor of physics at Glasgow University and also a leading figure in the grid project, says, “grid technologies could revolutionize society.” He continues, “With this kind of computing power, future generations will have the ability to collaborate and communicate in ways older people like me cannot even imagine.”

Scientists have termed the inaugural day of the grid as the “red button” day, this summer. This is the same day when the Large Hadron Collider will be switched on, which is the new particle accelerator that is built to probe the origin of the universe.
The grid computing project was started seven years ago because researchers realized that LHC (Large Hadron Collider) would be generating data annually that could be equivalent to 56m CDs. With the grid, they wish to capture data that the LHC generates.

Since the internet has been developed by linking together a medley of cables and routing equipment, most of which was originally meant for telephone calls, it does not have the capacity for transmitting high speed data. By contrast, the grid has been created after much thought and planning, to handle high data transmission, with the help of dedicated fibre optic cables and modern routing centers. This makes the grid a perfect source for passage of data.

Computers on grid will be able to transmit and receive data at lightning speed. Researchers are excited at the prospect of being able to perform all their heavy processing tasks with the help of the grid, where they can take the assistance of all those thousands of computers worldwide.

People in the know believe that there could a flip side to the grid, related to issues with hacking. The security system for such high speed downloads has to be fool-proof and perfectly designed, with no room for error.

Today is the time when we actually breathe technology and the pace at which it is progressing seems scary at times. We identify Microsoft as a pioneer in developing operating systems and Google as a pioneer with search engines. Both amazing technological advances and both of them are equally popular amongst the masses. But bigger the names, lesser are the chances of them being ready to co-exist with another.

The battle between the two technical giants – Google and Microsoft seems never ending ever since their inception. It can be termed at a level where there is no looking back for the either of them. Some of the cases that are listed below will prove the feud existing between these two corporations.

Recently the fight has been escalating on the browser front. We all know that Google captures the larger part of the market when it comes to search engines where as Microsoft possesses only a small part as low as eleven percent of the cyberspace search engine users. To break away from Google’s monopoly, Microsoft has come up with a “search box” in an attractive location in their new operating system browser called the Vista browser. When it comes to using the browser, Microsoft rules the market with Internet explorer being the most popular browser in the world. Therefore, when the users upgrade to the advanced internet explorers, they will be presented with the search option. This search option from Microsoft can always prove to be a threat on Google’s monopoly.

Talking about the other side of the story, Google are the soul distributors of the Mozilla browser. Mozilla firefox comes with the search box option by Google and the users of this browser can also enhance its features to devise the other search engines too. It was observed that Google sent a complaint the Department of Justice in the United States about the features of Microsoft. Last year Google complained against the false publicity of the Microsoft browser.

It was reported in the Wall Street Journal very recently about the desktop search fight. Desktop search is the utility that allows its users to scan everything, from personal information to hard drives. The Journal reported that Google has logged a complaint to the federal antitrust authorities arguing that Microsoft does not simplify the use of desktop search software made by any other company including Google. It also made a point about the new indexing feature of Microsoft. It said that this features logs all the user files and in turn makes the computer extremely slow if another desktop search software is used.

Another battle comes at the time of buying the company called “Double Click Inc”. It is an online advertisement services firm and Microsoft has alleged Google for bringing in anti trust elements for the online ad scenario.

A constant battle continues at the time of bringing in three dimensional maps, restricted to the cities in the United States. It is more or less a searchable mapping service and all we can see is wait till another drama unfolds from two of the most prominent technology biggies in the world.
