Trying New System Icons in Windows 10

The Windows 10 operating system will soon get a pack of new system icons giving it a much-needed ‘facelift’ prior to Windows 10X. These icons are slowly emerging in the test builds of Windows 10. If you’re a Windows Insider, you can try them beforehand. If you aren’t comfortable with betas, you can simply see the whole suite of new designs before they are implemented across Windows 10.

In our view, the new system icons look terrific; the monochromatic silhouettes that were introduced in 2015 have been replaced with colourful and expressive shapes, though not everyone is impressed. The new icons aren’t the issue; it’s the Start Menu’s single-colour backgrounds.

The Start Menu’s background colour is usually set by the accent colour of your particular Windows theme and it keeps changing as you adjust the setting or update the desktop image. The new icons use the same blue background regardless of the settings.

Such issues are common for Windows Insider builds and we expect them to be fixed and released soon. In fact, Microsoft intends to include them in the Windows 10X update later this year.

If you’ve received the new icons, try changing your background image and/or adjusting your Windows theme’s accent colour. Right-click on your desktop and choose Personalize > Colors.
