Darktable

Darktable is an open-source virtual lighttable and darkroom for photographers, dedicated to non-destructive RAW development and photo cataloging rather than pixel editing. The project was founded in 2009 by computer-graphics researcher Johannes Hanika and remains community-maintained under the GNU General Public License. Darktable runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows and has become the reference free alternative to Adobe Lightroom.

Darktable began in 2009 when Johannes Hanika, a computer-graphics researcher then at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany, published a Linux-focused viewer and RAW-development tool designed around a scene-referred processing pipeline. The project rapidly attracted contributors from the photography and open-source communities, and today more than a hundred developers, translators, and documentation writers contribute across releases coordinated through the darktable-org organisation on GitHub. Successive versions expanded platform coverage to macOS and Windows and introduced features that have progressively narrowed the gap with proprietary alternatives such as Adobe Lightroom and Capture One. The application separates a lighttable view for cataloging, rating, tagging, and organising an image library from a darkroom view where more than sixty processing modules apply non-destructive edits to the selected file. Modules cover exposure, filmic and sigmoid tone mapping, color calibration, lens correction, denoising, sharpening, local masks driven by drawn shapes or parametric image values, perspective correction, retouch cloning, and dozens of other operations. Every edit is stored as a reversible history entry inside a per-image sidecar file, so the original RAW capture is never overwritten and any point in the edit chain can be recalled later. Darktable ships an export queue for JPEG, TIFF, PNG, WebP, and PDF output at any bit depth the underlying format supports, and provides tethered shooting for supported Nikon, Canon, and other camera bodies. The codebase is licensed under the GNU General Public License v3 and distributed as free source and prebuilt binaries through darktable.org, Flathub, and platform package managers. Development conversations happen on the project's GitHub repository, in the darktable Mastodon presence on photog.social, on a large Reddit community, and through the YouTube tutorial channels that document specific processing recipes. The project publishes translated user manuals covering the full module set, and photographers around the world rely on Darktable as the free tool that most closely reproduces a Lightroom workflow without a subscription, without cloud upload, and without lock-in to a proprietary catalog format.
