DaVinci Resolve

DaVinci Resolve is a professional video editing, color grading, visual effects, motion graphics, and audio post-production application. Originally released by da Vinci Systems around 2004 as a hero color-grading tool and acquired by Australian broadcast-hardware manufacturer Blackmagic Design in 2009, Resolve has been offered as a free full-feature version alongside a paid Studio edition since Blackmagic rebuilt it as an integrated post workflow.

DaVinci Resolve traces its history to the da Vinci Systems color-grading systems that were an industry-standard in cinematic post-production from the 1980s onward. The current software product, DaVinci Resolve, was released in the mid-2000s as the successor to those dedicated color-grading platforms. Australian broadcast-hardware manufacturer Blackmagic Design, founded and led by Grant Petty in 2001 with headquarters in Port Melbourne, acquired the DaVinci brand in 2009 and rebuilt the application as an integrated post-production suite. Since Blackmagic's rebuild, Resolve has combined the editing, color grading, Fusion visual effects, Fairlight audio, and motion-graphics workflows that previously required separate software into one desktop application. Blackmagic distributes DaVinci Resolve in two editions. The free version is a full application that supports up to Ultra HD delivery, multiple timeline tracks, color pages, Fusion nodes for VFX and motion graphics, and the Fairlight digital audio workstation with unlimited tracks. The paid DaVinci Resolve Studio edition unlocks higher-than-UHD delivery, additional noise-reduction and neural-engine tools, HDR and ACES workflows, film-grain and stereoscopic 3D features, and multi-user collaboration, and is sold as a perpetual license typically distributed alongside Blackmagic camera and hardware purchases. The application runs natively on Windows, macOS, and Linux and takes advantage of GPU acceleration through OpenCL, Metal, and CUDA. Blackmagic Design coordinates community through the official DaVinci Resolve site, an active user forum, extensive training material published as free PDF books and video series, an annual training-certification programme, and a documentation set that ships with each release. The Blackmagic Design YouTube channel, LinkedIn presence, Twitter and Instagram accounts, and industry-trade-show demonstrations at NAB and IBC give the product its main public presence. Independent editors, film schools, feature-film colorists, YouTube channels, and enterprise post-production facilities use the free tier as a genuine professional NLE without a subscription.
