It is a good idea to check them out by sending a ticket to their customer service at an odd time and see how fast they respond.

These are by no means the only things one has to look for, but are some of the crucial things. Other things such as how fast their servers are, whether they provide unrestricted CGI access, SSH and FTP access, access to their raw server log, power and daily server backups, no minimum contracts, what is their downtime and a whole lot more can be looked into based on specific requirements. While at it, also check on the number of domains and sub-domains they provide.

It is really not as bad as it sounds, because once the search begins, there are a few good web hosts names that are bound to come up, those who provide everything and top marketers vouch for. The key to finding a web host is to keep future growth in mind.

  • Good article. Although I believe support should be higher simply because alot of web hosts are the same now. They offer a lot of the same features and they have kind of cookie cutter websites. The one major thing that sets them apart is their level of support. It is very important that they are there 24/7 like you pointed out b/c they know what’s going on at the datacenter more than you do. They should be there to help you through multiple ways at all times

  • I have to agree with Steve, support is the most important factor to me. I can’t count the times 24/7 support from my host has helped me out of a jam. It may only be my personal opinion, but support is the end all of good hosting.

  • Great article I usually choose via word of mouth or use a search tool like ocean of hosts or somehting. If the company has all the specifications that i want and is inexpesive (expecially now) i usually go with it.

  • there are guidelines on how to find a good web host. You must find that on the host company where you entrusted your business. But before choosing a company, you must also consider their length of experience in that kind of job so that your business will not put in higher risk and so that your money will not be wasted.

  • Word of mouth is an important way for knowing the credibility and quality of a web hosting service. But apart from that you need to also do your own research based on your needs. Because may host a blog with company A. That does not mean you should also host your picture with that same company.

  • I asked around and found that a few of my friends went with Havaweb.com because they build the website for you rather than one of those Do It Yourself Jobs.
    As for their uptime… I have never noticed my site or company email going down at all. They are real down to earth people there and they are willing to help me with my website every time I call.
