CapCut is a video editing application published by Chinese technology company ByteDance, the same parent company that owns TikTok and Douyin. Launched in 2019 under the domestic Chinese name Jianying and released internationally as CapCut, the product is offered as a free web, desktop, and mobile editor optimized for short-form vertical video, social-platform export presets, and template-driven creation workflows.

CapCut launched in 2019 as the international release of Jianying, a mobile video editor developed by ByteDance, the Beijing-founded technology company behind TikTok and its Chinese counterpart Douyin. ByteDance built the application to serve the same creator base that produces short-form vertical video across those platforms, and CapCut has since expanded from a mobile-only product into a cross-platform suite covering iOS and Android apps, Windows and macOS desktop applications, and a browser-based CapCut Online editor. ByteDance is headquartered in Beijing and Los Angeles and reports Liang Rubo as its current chief executive. The product is positioned around speed and template-first workflows rather than deep manual control. CapCut ships an extensive library of licensed music, sound effects, filters, transitions, text presets, and creator-produced templates that let a user assemble a finished social video by dropping clips into a prebuilt structure. A more traditional multi-track timeline is also present, with keyframe animation, speed ramping, chroma key, mask compositing, automatic captions in dozens of languages, audio ducking, and AI-driven features that include voice-to-text captioning, background removal, and generative content tools. Export supports common social presets, from vertical 9:16 short-form up through 4K UHD depending on the platform and feature tier used in the project. CapCut is distributed free for consumer use through capcut.com, the Apple App Store, Google Play, and the Microsoft Store, and monetises through the CapCut Pro subscription that unlocks additional templates, cloud storage, and higher-tier AI features. Community channels include the official CapCut YouTube channel, Instagram and TikTok accounts that showcase templates, and a dedicated Discord server. The product is one of the most-downloaded video editing applications globally and, alongside TikTok, has driven the recent shift in consumer video editing toward vertical, template-based social content.
