Clipchamp was founded in 2013 in Brisbane, Australia by Alexander Dreiling, Soeren Balko, Tobi Raub, and Dave Hewitt with the goal of running a full video-editing workflow directly inside a browser tab through modern web standards. The founding team combined engineering backgrounds from SAP Research and other technical companies, and Clipchamp raised funding through Australian and international venture rounds before Microsoft acquired the company in September 2021 for an undisclosed sum. Following the acquisition, Microsoft rebranded the product as Microsoft Clipchamp and rolled it into Windows 11 as the operating system's built-in video editor, replacing the older Windows Movie Maker and short-lived Photos-based Story Remix flows. The application runs in modern Chromium browsers and as a Progressive Web App on Windows and macOS. Core features include a multi-track timeline, trimming, transitions, text overlays, filters, colour adjustments, speed changes, voiceover recording, screen recording, audio ducking, and export up to 1080p on the free tier with 4K available under the paid plan. Microsoft integrations extend the product beyond a standalone editor: Copilot-branded AI features generate auto-composed videos from prompts, OneDrive stores project files and media, and the application integrates with the wider Microsoft 365 stock-media library through a shared licensing agreement. Microsoft distributes Clipchamp through clipchamp.com, the Microsoft Store, and inbox on current Windows 11 builds. Community channels are lighter than for open-source competitors because the product is largely maintained by an in-house Microsoft team, but the official Clipchamp YouTube channel and Microsoft Support articles cover product usage, and the Microsoft Learn documentation set includes Clipchamp material aimed at students and educators. The application is a natural default recommendation for Windows-focused creators who want quick edits without downloading a separate NLE.
