D3.js

D3.js, short for Data-Driven Documents, is a JavaScript library for building custom data visualisations by binding data to Document Object Model elements. Created in 2011 by Mike Bostock at Stanford, alongside Jeffrey Heer and Vadim Ogievetsky, and released under the ISC license, D3.js has become the reference low-level visualisation library on the web and underpins the custom charts used by The New York Times, Financial Times, Bloomberg, and countless dashboards.

D3.js was published in 2011 as a research project by Mike Bostock, then a PhD student at Stanford University, alongside co-authors Jeffrey Heer and Vadim Ogievetsky in the Stanford Visualization Group. The library replaced Bostock's earlier Protovis project with an approach that made the browser's own SVG, HTML, and Canvas the visualisation surface, binding data to DOM elements through a fluent selection API. Bostock later joined The New York Times graphics desk as the primary infographics engineer, and D3 quickly became the foundation of the newspaper's celebrated interactive election maps, statistical explainers, and long-form data journalism pieces. He co-founded Observable in 2016 with Melody Meckfessel to build a hosted notebook platform where D3 remains a first-class citizen, and stewardship of the open-source library now sits with the Observable community and independent maintainers. D3.js is intentionally a low-level toolkit rather than a chart library. Modules cover selections that bind data to elements, scales that translate data values to pixel coordinates, axes that render tick marks and labels, shapes that generate SVG path data for lines and areas, hierarchies that compute treemap and pack layouts, geo projections for cartographic work, force-directed simulations for network graphs, transitions that animate change over time, and colour interpolation, formatting, and time utilities. Version 7, the current release line, ships as ES modules and can be consumed through npm, a CDN, or Observable, and integrates cleanly with modern build tools and TypeScript. D3 is distributed free under the ISC license through d3js.org and mirrored on npm and GitHub at d3/d3. Community channels include the d3 GitHub organization, the Observable community forum, an active Stack Overflow tag with tens of thousands of answered questions, and independent tutorial channels including Curran Kelleher's live-coding series. The library remains the default recommendation for bespoke web visualisations that fall outside the capabilities of higher-level chart libraries and BI products.
