HandBrake was originally released in 2003 by French developer Eric Petit, known online as "titer", who published the first version on the Doom9 forum as a Mac OS X application for ripping and transcoding DVDs. The project moved onto its own hosting at handbrake.fr, gained an active volunteer team including John Stebbins, Bradley Sepos, and Scott R. Duchin, and expanded to native Windows and Linux ports. HandBrake is licensed under the GNU General Public License and coordinated openly through GitHub at HandBrake/HandBrake with periodic public release cycles and a large community-maintained set of translations. The application is a transcoder rather than a video editor. Users load a source file or optical disc, choose one of the built-in delivery presets or configure a custom encoder profile, then queue the job for encoding. HandBrake supports the current generation of video codecs including H.264 through x264, H.265 through x265, VP9, and AV1 through SVT-AV1, along with audio codecs, subtitle burn-in or pass-through, per-title chapter selection, cropping, deinterlacing, decomb filters, denoising, framerate conversion, and constant-quality or bitrate-based rate control. A built-in job queue lets users batch large libraries, and the command-line interface at HandBrakeCLI supports scripted encoding for archive projects and server-side transcoding. HandBrake is distributed free through handbrake.fr for Windows, macOS, and Linux, and mirrored on Flathub, Snap, and the platform stores.
