Redash

Redash is an open-source SQL-first dashboard and data-visualisation application founded in 2013 by Israeli engineer Arik Fraimovich. The project was maintained by Redash Inc. through the 2010s before Databricks acquired the company in June 2020, and the codebase remains under the BSD 2-Clause license. Redash targets teams that already write SQL against a data warehouse and need dashboards and scheduled queries on top.

Redash was founded in 2013 by Arik Fraimovich, an Israeli software engineer who built the first version as a personal project after failing to find a lightweight SQL-first analytics tool for the small teams he was working with. Fraimovich open-sourced the codebase under the BSD 2-Clause license, incorporated Redash Inc. in Israel to support the growing community, and eventually raised venture funding to build a commercial hosted service alongside the free self-hosted product. In June 2020 Databricks acquired Redash and folded parts of its query-and-dashboard model into what became Databricks SQL. Since the acquisition, the open-source Redash repository has continued to receive community contributions, though the pace of development has slowed and enterprise users looking for continued paid support have generally moved onto Apache Superset, Metabase, or Databricks SQL. The Redash application is designed around SQL. A user writes a query against a connected data source through the in-browser query editor, saves the result, and pins one or more visualisations, then arranges those visualisations onto dashboards that can be shared internally, scheduled to refresh, or published as a public URL. Data-source connectors ship for most SQL databases and warehouse products including PostgreSQL, MySQL, Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift, Athena, Presto, Trino, and Databricks, alongside NoSQL and API-based sources such as MongoDB, Elasticsearch, Google Sheets, and generic JSON endpoints. Alerts fire when query results cross thresholds, and integrations connect to Slack, Microsoft Teams, PagerDuty, and email. Redash is distributed free through redash.io and the getredash/redash GitHub repository. Deployment options include a Docker Compose stack for self-hosting, a Helm chart for Kubernetes, and community-maintained cloud-installer images. Community channels include the redash-users mailing list, the redash Discourse forum, a subreddit at r/redash, and the getredash GitHub organization, and long-time contributors continue to publish tutorials that help small teams stand up a SQL-first analytics stack without a proprietary BI subscription.
