That pace, more than sevenfold growth in roughly half a year, explains why a static "list of Claude connectors" goes stale the week after anyone publishes it.

We run DirJournal, and we have spent nineteen years organizing directories. So when we look at Anthropic's connector directory, we read it the way a librarian reads a newly built wing. What follows is the full picture of what Claude connectors are, which ones exist, and how we would shelve them if the job landed on our desk.

What a Claude Connector Actually is

A Claude connector is a finished, hosted bridge between Claude and an outside service, and it runs on the Model Context Protocol, the open standard Anthropic shipped for exactly this purpose. Anthropic launched connectors in July 2025. The pitch was blunt. Stop describing your work to Claude and let it see your work directly.

Each connector is a remote MCP server. Someone else builds it, hosts it in the cloud, and keeps it running. You authenticate once through OAuth, grant the permissions you choose, and Claude can then read from or act inside that service.

The permission point matters more than the marketing does. Claude inherits your access and nothing beyond it. If you cannot open a particular Slack channel or a specific Drive folder yourself, the connector cannot reach it on your behalf either.

Claude Connectors vs MCP: the Question Most People Type Wrong

Connectors and MCP are not competitors, and the steady search demand for "claude connectors vs mcp" comes from a real confusion worth clearing up. Connectors are MCP servers. MCP is the protocol; a connector is a finished, hosted application built on top of it.

Here is the practical split. MCP is for developers who want to build a custom integration from scratch, often a local server running on their own machine. A connector is that same idea packaged so an ordinary person authenticates and goes, with no code to write and no server to run.

Anyone on a paid Claude plan can add a custom connector through an MCP server URL. That is the seam where the two worlds meet. The protocol is the raw material. The connector is the product.

How Many Claude Connectors Exist, and Why the Number Keeps Moving

The directory listed 369 connectors across 11 working categories as of June 19, 2026, up from the "50-plus" that coverage cited in early March. Bloomberry, an analytics tracker, separately detected 310 companies appearing as official Claude connectors, with software development firms making up about 60 percent of them. The two counts measure slightly different things, which is itself a lesson in why directory numbers need a date stamped beside them.

We treat any connector count without a date attached as fiction. The roster changes by the week. That one discipline, dating every figure, is the first thing we would fix on most of the "best Claude connectors" lists ranking today.

The Categories That Matter, and the Connectors Inside Them

Anthropic sorts the directory into 11 categories. We would collapse those into a handful of working buckets. Here is how the most-used connectors fall.

Communication and email. The Gmail connector lets Claude search your mailbox and draft replies straight from it, and it summarizes a six-month thread with one client on request. Slack reads channels and sends messages. Outlook handles the Microsoft side of the same work, which is why "claude connectors outlook" and "claude connectors microsoft 365" both show real search demand.

Project management. Linear shows up constantly in engineering workflows, exposing issues and projects so Claude can create and update them without you pasting context in. Asana and ClickUp do the same job for teams that live outside the codebase. The pattern across all of them is identical: Claude reads the board, then acts on it under your permissions.

Data and analytics. Amplitude and Mixpanel hand Claude your product analytics, useful precisely because most teams check that data far less often than they should. Hex turns business intelligence queries into a conversation. Windsor.ai goes wider than any single platform's connector, pulling marketing data from over 345 sources into one Claude chat.

Developer tooling. GitHub anchors this group, giving Claude access to repositories and issues. The directory added Clay in February 2026 for go-to-market data enrichment, one more sign that the developer edge of the directory keeps bleeding into sales and operations.

Finance. Stripe exposes payment and revenue data to Claude. Intuit's TurboTax connector offers AI-assisted tax estimates built on the same core framework TurboTax itself runs on, which is a meaningful step up from a generic chatbot guessing at your refund.

Automation as a multiplier. Zapier earns its own line because it changes the arithmetic of the whole directory. Its connector reaches over 8,000 apps through automated workflows, so when no native connector exists for a tool you depend on, Zapier becomes the bridge that fills the gap.

The consumer wave. Anthropic's April 2026 expansion pushed connectors past the office and into daily life. That batch added AllTrails, Audible, Booking.com, Instacart, Resy, Spotify, StubHub, Taskrabbit, Thumbtack, TripAdvisor, Uber, Uber Eats, Viator, and Intuit Credit Karma. This is the move that turns connectors from a power-user feature into a mainstream one.

Are Claude Connectors Free?

Web connectors reach every Claude user, including the free tier, across Claude, Cowork, Desktop, and the mobile apps. The paid plans, Pro and Max alongside Team and Enterprise, unlock the part developers care about: custom connectors added through an MCP server URL, plus interactive apps. So the answer splits cleanly. Browsing and using the directory costs nothing, while building your own integration into Claude requires a paid plan.

How Do You Add a Claude Connector?

You add a connector from the same place whether you sit on web or desktop. Open the directory through Settings, then Connectors, or click the plus button next to the prompt box and choose from the menu. Pick the service, review what it can read and write, and click Connect to begin the OAuth handshake.

Team and Enterprise accounts add one gate in front of that. An Owner enables the connector for the organization first, after which each person still authenticates individually. Enabling it company-wide does not log anyone in. It only puts the connector on the shelf for people to pick up.

Connectors vs Plugins: the Distinction Cowork Blurred

Plugins and connectors are not the same thing, and Anthropic's Cowork app is where people conflate them. A connector links Claude to one outside service. A plugin bundles several capabilities into one installable unit, packaged like an app you add in a single move.

Put plainly, a connector is one tool and a plugin is a toolbox. A plugin can hold connectors inside it next to other components. For most people the difference only surfaces at install time, when they want to know whether they just switched on one capability or a whole set of them.

Can You Build Your Own Claude Connector?

Yes, and Anthropic actively invites it. Any developer can build a connector on MCP and submit it for directory review, and the company publishes both directory terms and a policy that governs what gets listed. Custom connectors you keep private need only a paid plan and an MCP server URL.

This is the part we find most interesting as directory operators. Anthropic runs an open-submission directory, the same model behind every successful directory before it, from the app stores back to the web directories we cut our teeth on in 2007. The connectors directory will live or die on what ours does, the freshness of its listings and the trust people place in what those listings claim.

Are Claude Connectors Safe to Use?

Safety here rests on two things, permissions and the people who built each connector. Claude can only do what your account in the connected service already allows, and Owners on Team and Enterprise plans can lock a connector to read-only, blocking it from writing any changes back. You can let Claude search your email without letting it send, or read a Drive without letting it edit a single file.

The sharper risk sits with the third-party connectors themselves. Each one is built and maintained by an outside developer carrying its own terms and privacy policy, both presented during the OAuth step. Grant only the access a task needs, audit your active connectors on a schedule, and treat a connector into a sensitive system the way you would treat handing a stranger a key to it.

What We Would Tell Anyone Choosing Connectors

Start from the work, not from the directory. The exercise that pays off is naming the few services where your real data lives, checking which of them have a connector, and switching on only those. A directory of 369 entries rewards restraint, not collection.

The connector that changes your week is rarely the flashy one. It is the quiet integration to the tool you already open twenty times a day, the one that ends the copy-and-paste shuffle between Claude and the place your work actually sits. Anthropic added the consumer names for the headlines, and the Gmail and GitHub connectors are the ones doing the real labor.

By the time you finished reading this, Anthropic's directory had almost certainly moved past 369, because the only fixed fact about a connector list is that the number on it is already out of date.
