Trustpilot gets 1.35 million AI citations across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Copilot, and Grok. Manta gets 1,844. Both appear on every "best free directories" list on the internet. Both have similar DA scores. One is 700 times more visible to AI search than the other.
Every directory guide you've read ranks sites by Domain Authority. DA tells you how strong the backlink is. It tells you nothing about whether AI engines actually cite that directory when someone asks "find me a plumber in Houston" or "which CRM should I buy." We checked. We pulled AI citation counts from Ahrefs for every major directory, cross-referenced them with our own 750-query AI Citation Study, and built the first directory guide that ranks sites by what matters in 2026: whether AI engines trust them enough to cite them.
Here are the five listings you should create today if you do nothing else: Google Business Profile, Yelp, BBB, Trustpilot, and Apple Business Connect. If you run a service business, add Angi. If you sell software, add G2. Everything after that depends on your industry.
The AI Citation Rankings

We pulled these numbers from Ahrefs in August 2026. Total AI citations = combined mentions across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Microsoft Copilot, and Grok.
Directory | DR | Total AI Citations | ChatGPT | Perplexity | Google AIO | Copilot | Grok | Free Listing |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Trustpilot | 94 | 1,350,175 | 423,926 | 409,084 | 165,194 | 142,754 | 209,217 | Yes |

53 | 1,398 | 363 | 77 | 5 | 919 | 15 | Yes |
Three things jump out of this data.
Trustpilot is the most AI-cited directory on the internet. 1.35 million citations. More than Yelp, BBB, and Angi combined. Every guide you've read puts Google Business Profile first and maybe mentions Trustpilot as an afterthought. AI engines disagree. When ChatGPT tells someone "check the reviews for this company," it links to Trustpilot 423,926 times. If you don't have a Trustpilot profile, you're invisible to the largest AI answer channel.
BBB outperforms Yellow Pages by 25x in AI. BBB gets 276,739 citations. Yellow Pages gets 11,043. Both have DR 90+. Both appear on every directory list as roughly equivalent. They're not. BBB carries trust signals (accreditation, dispute resolution, complaint history) that AI engines weight heavily. Yellow Pages carries a phone number and an address.
Foursquare is dead for AI visibility. DR 91 and only 2,613 AI citations. Every competitor article lists Foursquare as a "must-have" directory. The data says it barely registers. It still feeds location data to other apps, which has some value, but if you're choosing where to spend your next hour, Foursquare ranks below Nextdoor (12,270 citations at DR 83).
Week 1: the Five Essential Listings
If you're starting from zero, these five matter more than the other 55 combined. Not because of DA. Because of reach.
Google Business Profile remains the single most important free listing for any business with a physical location or service area. It controls your appearance in Google Maps, the local 3-pack, and Google AI Overviews. Claim yours at business.google.com. Fill in every field: hours, categories, services, photos, Q&A. Businesses with complete profiles get 7x more clicks than empty ones according to Google's own data. If your hours are wrong on Google, nothing else matters.
Trustpilot (1.35M AI citations) is where AI engines check your reputation. Create a free business profile at business.trustpilot.com. The free tier lets customers leave reviews and gives you a public trust score. You can respond to reviews and display your score on your website. The paid tiers ($259+/month) add invitations and integrations, but the free profile is enough to get cited by AI.
Yelp (366K AI citations) dominates local services. If you're a restaurant, salon, plumber, dentist, or any consumer-facing business, Yelp is non-negotiable. Claim your page at biz.yelp.com. Don't pay for ads until you've earned at least 10 organic reviews. Our AI Citation Study found Yelp was the #1 directory AI engines recommend when asked "how do I verify a local business?" with 115 mentions across 750 queries.
BBB (276K AI citations) adds a trust layer that reviews alone can't match. BBB accreditation costs money ($500-5,000/year depending on company size), but the free listing is available to any business. Claim yours at bbb.org/get-listed. The free listing shows your BBB rating, complaint history, and basic company profile. AI engines cite BBB 146,874 times in ChatGPT alone, primarily for trust verification.
Apple Business Connect gives you presence on Apple Maps, Siri, and Safari. With over 2 billion active Apple devices, this is where iPhone users find businesses. Register at businessconnect.apple.com. Apple Maps also pulls Yelp reviews, so your Yelp presence compounds here.
Month 1: Expand to 15
After the essential five, add these 10 based on your business type.
Every business should add:
Bing Places puts you on Microsoft's search engine and feeds data to Copilot (which generates 919 citations for DirJournal alone). Import directly from your Google Business Profile at bingplaces.com. Takes 5 minutes.
Facebook Business Page still drives local discovery for 3+ billion monthly users. Your page shows up in Facebook Search, Marketplace, and local recommendations. Create yours from your personal Facebook account.
LinkedIn Company Page matters for B2B. Decision-makers search LinkedIn before making vendor decisions. Your company page is also a strong entity signal for AI engines because LinkedIn's DR (99) passes authority to anything it links to.
Nextdoor (12,270 AI citations) connects you with your literal neighbours. For home services, restaurants, childcare, tutoring, and local retail, Nextdoor recommendations carry weight because they come from people who live nearby. Claim your business page at business.nextdoor.com.
Service businesses should add:
Angi (290,825 AI citations) is the #1 home services directory for AI visibility. ChatGPT cites Angi 143,611 times. If you're a plumber, electrician, roofer, painter, or contractor, Angi is more important than Yelp for AI-referred leads.
Thumbtack (33,938 AI citations) matches service providers with local customers. You pay per lead, not per listing. The free profile gets you discovered. Perplexity alone cites Thumbtack 21,141 times.
HomeAdvisor (now part of Angi) provides a second presence within the Angi network. Some AI engines still cite HomeAdvisor separately.
Software and B2B companies should add:
G2 (175,865 AI citations) is the #1 software review platform for AI visibility. ChatGPT cites G2 66,980 times. If you sell software, a G2 profile with reviews is more valuable for AI discovery than any general directory.
Clutch (17,867 AI citations) focuses on service agencies: digital marketing, web development, IT consulting. If you run an agency, Clutch is where enterprise buyers check your track record.
DirJournal (1,398 AI citations) is our own directory. Built for AI search since 2007, rebuilt in 2026. Copilot cites DirJournal 919 times, the highest concentration in any single AI engine among general directories at our size. List your business for free.
Industry-Specific Directories That AI Actually Cites
General directories get you baseline visibility. Industry directories get you found by buyers who already know what they need.
Legal:
Directory | AI Citations | Best For |
|---|---|---|
Avvo | 10,076 | Attorney profiles, peer ratings, Q&A |
Justia | 173,590 | Free attorney profiles, legal information |
FindLaw | 26,392 | Attorney directory, legal content |
Martindale-Hubbell | ~3,000 | Peer review ratings (AV Preeminent) |
Super Lawyers | ~2,500 | Peer-selected recognition |
Justia gets 173,590 AI citations compared to FindLaw's 26,392. ChatGPT alone cites Justia 149,698 times, making it the most AI-cited legal resource after Avvo. If you're a lawyer choosing between Justia and FindLaw, the AI data is decisive.
Our Legal AI Citation Study found Avvo received 258 mentions across 600 queries. Martindale and Super Lawyers tied at 194 each. If you're a lawyer, Avvo is your Trustpilot.
Healthcare:
Directory | AI Citations | Best For |
|---|---|---|
WebMD (provider directory) | 791,801 | Consumer health + doctor search |
Healthgrades | 25,674 | Patient reviews, provider profiles |
Zocdoc | 3,711 | Appointment booking, patient reviews |
Vitals | ~3,000 | Doctor ratings, patient reviews |
RateMDs | ~1,500 | Doctor reviews (strong in Canada) |
WebMD's provider directory dominates healthcare AI visibility at 791,801 citations, roughly 31x Healthgrades. If you're a doctor, dentist, or therapist, a WebMD physician profile is the highest-leverage listing you can create. Healthgrades (25,674) is the second-tier essential, and functions like your Yelp page for patient reviews.
Home Services:
Directory | AI Citations | Best For |
|---|---|---|
Angi | 290,825 | Contractors, plumbers, electricians |
Houzz | 153,226 | Interior design, home renovation |
Thumbtack | 33,938 | Service pros, matching with customers |
HomeAdvisor | ~25,000 | Home improvement, remodelling |
Porch | 924 | Home improvement pros |
Angi's 290,825 AI citations lead home services, followed by Houzz at 153,226 (a distant but real #2). Thumbtack rounds out the top three at 33,938. If you do one thing for your home services business, make your Angi profile complete; if you sell design or renovation, add Houzz second.
Porch gets 924 total AI citations. That's less than DirJournal (1,398). Skip it unless you have nothing else to do.
Restaurants and Hospitality:
Google Business Profile, Yelp, and TripAdvisor are the three that matter. TripAdvisor pulls 1,134,087 AI citations — the second-highest of any directory in our dataset, behind only Trustpilot. If you run a restaurant, hotel, tour, or any hospitality business, TripAdvisor is not optional. OpenTable matters for restaurant reservations specifically.
Tech and Agencies:
Directory | AI Citations | Best For |
|---|---|---|
G2 | 175,865 | Software reviews, buyer research |
Capterra | 95,442 | Software comparison, buyer guides |
Clutch | 17,867 | Digital agencies, IT services |
DesignRush | 11,334 | Creative and marketing agencies |
GoodFirms | 7,885 | Software + agency reviews |
G2's 175,865 citations make it the undisputed leader for software visibility in AI search. If you sell software or SaaS, G2 is your first priority after Google Business Profile.
Free Advertising Beyond Directories
The "free business listing" query often comes from people who want more than a directory profile. Here's what else works at zero cost.
Google Business Posts let you publish updates, offers, and events directly on your Google Business Profile. These show up in Google Search and Maps results. Post weekly. Include a photo and a call-to-action button. Posts expire after 7 days for offers, 6 months for standard posts.
Facebook Marketplace puts products in front of local buyers. Free to list physical products. Useful for retail, furniture, automotive, and local services.
Craigslist still drives leads for services, rentals, and local commerce. Free in most categories. Post in your city's "services" section if you're a contractor, cleaner, mover, or tutor.
Nextdoor Business Posts let you share updates with your neighbourhood. Free for claimed business pages. The hyperlocal audience converts better than broader platforms for home services and local retail.
Reddit is underestimated for business visibility. Perplexity cites Reddit more than any other platform. Find your city's subreddit and your industry's subreddit. Contribute genuinely. Don't spam. A single helpful answer on r/homeimprovement or r/smallbusiness can drive referrals for months.
YouTube is the second-largest search engine. A simple video showing your work, your team, or answering common customer questions creates a presence that text-only profiles can't match. You don't need production quality. Phone camera, natural lighting, honest narration.
UK Business Directories
If you operate in the UK, these are the free directories that matter beyond the global platforms.
Directory | What It Does | Free Listing |
|---|---|---|
Yell.com | UK's Yellow Pages equivalent | Yes |
FreeIndex | UK business directory with reviews | Yes |
Thomson Local | Local trades and services | Yes |
Cylex UK | UK business search | Yes |
192.com | Business and people lookup | Yes |
Checkatrade | Vetted trades (application required) | Free profile, lead fees |
Bark | Service matching platform | Free profile, lead fees |
Scoot | UK business directory | Yes |
Hotfrog UK | SME directory | Yes |
BizHouse UK | Small business directory | Yes |
"Business directory UK free listing" gets 150 searches/month in the UK. Most guides ignore UK-specific directories entirely. If you operate in the UK, Yell.com and FreeIndex should follow your Google Business Profile and Trustpilot listings.
What Happens After You List
Creating the listing is half the job. Here's what nobody tells you about the other half.
Verification takes 1-14 days. Google sends a postcard (3-7 days) or offers phone/email verification for established businesses. Yelp is instant. BBB requires a phone call. Apple takes 1-3 business days. Don't list on 20 sites in one day and then wonder why nothing shows up. Space your submissions over 2-3 weeks and track which ones are verified.
Your NAP must be identical everywhere. Name, Address, Phone. Same formatting. Same abbreviations. Same suite number. "123 Main St Suite 200" on Google and "123 Main Street, Ste 200" on Yelp confuses search engines. Pick one format and use it everywhere. This matters more than most people realise: 41% of businesses have mismatched NAP data across their listings, and 93% of consumers are frustrated by incorrect directory information.
Ask for reviews on the platforms that matter. Not all reviews carry equal weight. A Google review improves your local pack ranking. A Trustpilot review gets cited by AI engines. A Yelp review helps local discovery. A G2 review drives software buyer decisions. Ask customers to review you where it matters most for your industry.
Check your listings quarterly. Directories change their platforms. Submission links break. Profiles get flagged or suppressed. A listing you created in January might show incorrect hours by June because the directory imported data from another source that had it wrong. Set a calendar reminder every 90 days.
Track referral traffic. In Google Analytics, look at Referrals under Acquisition. You'll see which directories actually send visitors. Some high-DA directories with impressive-sounding metrics send zero traffic. Others with modest DA scores send consistent qualified visitors. The data will surprise you.
The Directories Every List Includes That You Can Probably Skip
Not every directory is worth your time. Several sites that appear on every "100 best directories" listicle rank by DA alone while delivering nothing measurable.
Manta (DR 86, 1,844 AI citations, zero Google AIO citations). Listed on every guide as essential. Gets almost no AI visibility and minimal referral traffic. The site exists but the ROI of maintaining a profile is close to zero unless you're in a very thin market.
Foursquare (DR 91, 2,613 AI citations). Was essential in 2015. Still feeds location data to some apps, but its direct AI visibility is lower than Nextdoor (DR 83, 12,270 citations). Create a profile if you have 5 spare minutes. Don't prioritise it.
Merchant Circle, CitySquares, EZLocal, Hotfrog. Low traffic, low AI visibility, and diminishing SEO value. These were useful for citation building in 2014. In 2026, you're better off spending that time on a single detailed Trustpilot or G2 profile.
The rule: if a directory sends you zero referral traffic after 6 months and has under 5,000 AI citations, remove it from your active management list. Keep the profile live for the backlink, but stop investing time in updates.
What AI Engines Say When Buyers Ask About Directories
We ran 750 queries across Claude, ChatGPT, and Perplexity asking how buyers should find and verify local businesses. We never used the word "directory" in any prompt. Here's what AI engines recommended organically:
Directory | Times AI Mentioned (750 queries) |
|---|---|
Yelp | 115 |
Expertise.com | 113 |
BBB | 65 |
Clutch | 55 |
G2 | 41 |
Google Reviews | 38 |
Trustpilot | 26 |
Angi | 18 |
When someone asks ChatGPT "how do I verify a local business is legitimate?", Yelp appears 55 times. BBB appears 34 times. These aren't paid placements. AI engines independently determined that Yelp and BBB are trust verification tools.
Expertise.com scored 113 mentions despite being editorially curated (you can't submit yourself). AI engines treat Expertise as an independent quality signal because businesses don't control their Expertise profiles. ChatGPT alone cited Expertise 77 times in our study.

Your First 30 Days: the Checklist
Days 1-3: Google Business Profile, Trustpilot, Yelp, BBB, Apple Business Connect. Verify each.
Days 4-7: Bing Places (import from Google), Facebook Business Page, LinkedIn Company Page, Nextdoor.
Days 8-14: Your top 3 industry directories from the tables above. Legal = Avvo + FindLaw + Justia. Healthcare = Healthgrades + Zocdoc + WebMD. Home Services = Angi + Thumbtack + HomeAdvisor. Software = G2 + Capterra + Clutch.
Days 15-30: Fill in remaining general directories: Yellow Pages, Data Axle, OpenStreetMap, Chamber of Commerce, DirJournal. Add photos and complete descriptions to every profile. Ask your first 5 customers for reviews on Google and Trustpilot.
Day 31 and beyond: Post weekly on Google Business Profile. Respond to every review within 48 hours. Check NAP consistency quarterly. Track referral traffic monthly in Google Analytics.
The gap between businesses that maintain 15 consistent, complete directory profiles and businesses that created 50 profiles and abandoned them is the gap between showing up in AI answers and being invisible.
