Personal Injury scored 71. Estate Planning scored 81. The legal specialty with the highest Google Ads spend ranked dead last in AI search visibility.

We ran 600 structured queries across Claude, ChatGPT, and Perplexity, covering 10 legal specialties in 5 major US cities. Every response was parsed for firm names, directory citations, and source attribution. This is the legal follow-up to our 750-query AI Citation Study that mapped business visibility across 50 commercial categories.

The legal data tells a different story from the general study. Zero refusals across 600 queries. AI engines are more willing to name specific law firms than specific doctors, restaurants, or home service providers.

9Criminal Defense & DUI72100%77%
10Personal Injury71100%72%

100% entity naming rate across every specialty. AI engines always named specific firms. The gap is in source citation rate and cross-engine agreement.

Estate Planning firms appeared with directory citations 98% of the time. Personal Injury firms appeared with citations only 72% of the time. AI knows PI firms exist but can't point buyers to structured verification sources as consistently.

Why Personal Injury Scores Lowest

PI firms spend more on advertising than any other legal specialty. The average CPC for "personal injury lawyer" is $100-200+ on Google. The industry pours billions into paid search annually.

But paid search presence doesn't translate to AI visibility. AI engines don't index Google Ads. They index directory profiles, review sites, case result databases, and structured web data. PI firms optimise for Google's ad auction. They don't optimise for the data signals AI engines parse.

Criminal Defense scored second-lowest (72) with 0% cross-engine agreement. Not a single criminal defense firm was named by all three engines. The specialty is hyper-local and hyper-fragmented. Every city has different criminal defense attorneys. AI engines can't converge on national leaders because there aren't any.

Why Estate Planning Scores Highest

Estate Planning and Probate scored 81 with a 98% source citation rate. AI engines cited directories or verification sources in nearly every response about estate planning lawyers.

The structural reason: estate planning is a referral-driven practice built on credentials, not advertising. Estate planning attorneys list on Avvo, maintain Super Lawyers profiles, hold board certifications, and publish thought leadership. These are exactly the signals AI engines weight.

Corporate & Business Law scored 78 for the same reason. Firms like Kirkland & Ellis (56 mentions), Latham & Watkins (27), and Skadden Arps (17) have overwhelming structured data footprints: Am Law rankings, Chambers ratings, deal tombstones, partner bios, and Wikipedia pages. AI engines have no shortage of structured signals to draw from.

Avvo Owns Legal AI

Avvo received 258 mentions. That's 33% more than Martindale (194) and more than triple Yelp (76).

In our general study across 50 categories, Yelp was the #1 directory (115 mentions). For legal, Yelp drops to #9. The legal profession has its own directory ecosystem and AI engines fully recognise it.

State Bar associations ranked #2 at 207 mentions. AI engines tell buyers to verify bar standing before anything else. This isn't a directory recommendation. It's a trust infrastructure signal. AI treats bar verification as a prerequisite, not a nice-to-have.

Super Lawyers and Martindale tied at 194. Both are peer-review platforms where lawyers are evaluated by other lawyers. AI engines weight peer verification heavily for legal, unlike consumer services where customer reviews (Yelp) dominate.

The 29 Firms AI Engines Agree on

29 law firms were named by Claude, ChatGPT, and Perplexity independently.

Immigration Has a Single Dominant Firm

FirmMentionsNotes
Fragomen23Named by all 3 engines. 2x the next firm.
Berry Appleman & Leiden9Named by 2 engines
Mehta & Partners7Named by all 3 engines

Fragomen owns immigration AI visibility the way Kirkland & Ellis owns corporate. AI engines have no choice but to name them because their market position and structured data presence are overwhelming.

Personal Injury Has City-Specific Consensus

FirmMentionsCity
Gair Gair Conason15New York
Salvi Schostok & Pritchard15Chicago
Levin & Perconti12Chicago
Hach & Rose11New York
Corboy & Demetrio10Chicago

PI consensus is geographic, not national. AI engines know different PI firms per city. No PI firm achieved the national consensus that Kirkland or Fragomen have. This is why PI scores lowest on cross-engine agreement: the market is fragmented by metro area.

The City Breakdown

RankCityAvg Score
1Houston, Texas76
2Los Angeles, California76
3Chicago, Illinois76
4Miami, Florida75
5New York City, New York74

New York scored lowest. The city with the most lawyers per capita produces the most diffuse AI responses. AI engines name different NYC firms every time because there are too many qualified options. Houston, LA, and Chicago have clearer market leaders that AI can converge on.

The highest-scoring combination: Corporate & Business Law in Los Angeles (83). The lowest: Personal Injury in New York (68). A 15-point gap between the best and worst specialty-city pairing.

Engine Comparison for Legal Queries

EngineAvg Firms NamedDirectory MentionsRefusals
Claude8.48150
Perplexity8.84240
ChatGPT6.05370

Perplexity named slightly more firms (8.8) than Claude (8.4) for legal queries. This is the reverse of the general study where Claude led at 14.7. Legal queries surface Perplexity's strength: it pulls from live search results that include legal directory pages.

Claude generated the most directory mentions (815 across 200 queries, 4.1 per response). When Claude recommends lawyers, it systematically lists the directories buyers should check. ChatGPT generated 537 directory mentions (2.7 per response). Perplexity generated 424 (2.1 per response).

Zero refusals across all 600 queries. Every engine named specific firms for every specialty in every city. Contrast this with the general study where healthcare queries produced refusals. AI treats lawyers as a safer recommendation category than doctors.

What This Means for Law Firms

If you're a PI firm: Your Google Ads budget doesn't help your AI visibility. Invest in Avvo (258 AI mentions), Super Lawyers (194), and Martindale (194). These are the directories AI engines cite when buyers ask "which personal injury lawyer should I hire?" A strong Avvo profile with ratings and reviews does more for AI visibility than $10,000/month in Google Ads.

If you're a corporate or bankruptcy firm: You're already visible. Kirkland, Latham, Skadden, and Paul Weiss dominate. The AI visibility gap between large corporate firms and smaller corporate boutiques is the next competitive frontier.

If you're a criminal defense attorney: Your specialty had 0% cross-engine agreement. No criminal defense firm was named by all three engines. This is the biggest AI blindspot in legal. The first DUI firm to build structured data presence across Avvo, Super Lawyers, and Martindale in all 5 major metros will own this category.

If you're an immigration firm: Fragomen at 23 mentions and Berry Appleman at 9 are the only firms with multi-engine visibility. The category has room for 3-4 more firms to establish AI consensus. That window won't stay open.
