SparkToro reported that 68.01% of US Google searches ended without a click during January through April 2026. Yet DirJournal's AI Citation Index records 1,350,175 citations to Trustpilot across five answer engines. The future of SEO has fewer clicks, but the source citation remains, and directories often receive it.

Zero-Click Search: the Data From 2016 to 2026

Google's zero-click rate rose from about 45% in 2016 to 68.01% in early 2026, according to SparkToro's historical series. The publisher warns that the comparison combines different clickstream panels, device mixes, and collection methods.

YearZero-Click RateSource
2016~45%Jumpshot data via SparkToro
201949%SparkToro using Jumpshot data
202064.82%Similarweb via SparkToro
202460.45% (US)Datos via SparkToro
2026 (Jan-Apr)68.01% (US)Similarweb via SparkToro

The 2026 rate sits 7.56 percentage points above the 2024 US figure. SparkToro calculates a 23-point rise across the decade, but calls the historical chart an imperfect comparison because Jumpshot supplied the older data, Datos supplied 2024, and Similarweb supplied 2026.

The 2026 study covers US browser searches and excludes searches inside Google's mobile app. SparkToro weighted the combined figure using a two-thirds mobile and one-third desktop split, and the researchers treated 10 seconds of mobile inactivity as the end of a search session.

AI features explain only part of the movement. SparkToro found that 0.34% of searches entered AI Mode during the study period, while clicks to Google's properties, paid results, and open-web pages also shaped the final zero-click rate.

Ahrefs reported that AI Overviews appeared for 18.9% of US keywords in its dataset. Its cited 2025 study found that AI summaries cut clicks by 34.5%, while SparkToro's 2026 article points to a separate Ahrefs analysis showing a decline of nearly 60% when an AI Overview appears.

Those percentages should not be merged into a single benchmark. One measures a specific Ahrefs keyword dataset and another comparison uses a different study design, so query type and sample selection can produce different click-loss estimates.

Zero-click also describes an outcome, not a motive. A search can end because the results page supplied the answer, because the user refined the query, or because the session stopped. SparkToro's 2026 study counts behavior in Similarweb clickstream data and does not claim that every clickless session satisfied the searcher.

The open-web denominator matters for publishers. SparkToro reports a 9.51-point fall in the share of searches producing any click from 2024 to 2026, a 22.9% decline, while its “any click” measure includes Google properties and paid results as well as outside websites.

Will AI Replace SEO?

AI will not replace search optimization while answer systems retrieve, compare, and cite web sources. It is replacing some visits by answering the query before a user opens a result, a pattern supported by SparkToro's 68.01% zero-click rate and Ahrefs' AI Overview research.

Search demand still exists inside the zero-click session. Google said that Search queries reached an all-time high in the quarter before I/O 2026, even as AI Mode surpassed one billion monthly users. More searches can coexist with fewer open-web visits per search.

Directory performance shows that citation visibility and organic traffic can separate. DirJournal's August 2026 Ahrefs dataset gives G2 175,865 AI citations, while its estimated monthly organic traffic fell from 955,529 in December 2025 to 615,028 in August 2026, a 36% decline.

Capterra's estimated organic traffic fell from 347,676 to 322,084 over the same period, a 7% decline. The supplied Ahrefs paid-cost series also places Capterra's 2026 peak at $46.6 million in June, far above its $318,000 December 2025 level.

Trustpilot moved in the opposite direction. Its estimated organic traffic increased from 33,301,044 to 57,308,006, a 72% gain, while its 1,350,175 citations placed it first in the 27-directory AI index.

The contrast supports an editorial hypothesis rather than a causal finding. AI answers can satisfy comparison queries inside the interface, while review platforms retain value as evidence for reputation checks. The datasets do not isolate reviews as the cause of Trustpilot's growth.

SEO therefore retains two jobs: making first-party pages discoverable and making the business verifiable beyond its own domain. DirJournal's AEO vs GEO vs SEO analysis separates rankings, source citations, and brand mentions because each records a different outcome.

HubSpot's 2026 AEO guide recommends adding citations and mention quality to search reporting, while Directive's 2026 analysis identifies structured data and current content as source-selection factors. Both retain traditional SEO alongside answer-engine measurement.

The Future of SEO

The future of SEO shifts measurement away from visits alone. The nine-month Ahrefs estimates below show rising traffic for several review or service directories while two software comparison platforms declined.

GoodFirms posts the largest percentage gain at 76%, although its August estimate of 150,576 remains far below Yelp's 108,508,084. Percentage growth and absolute audience size answer different questions.

Clutch complicates a simple split between review sites and comparison sites. It combines agency profiles, verified reviews, and ranked provider lists, and its estimated traffic rose 40% to 1,181,000. The citation index assigns Clutch 17,867 AI citations.

G2 and Capterra declined in the supplied organic estimates, but both retained substantial AI citation counts at 175,865 and 95,442. An answer engine can cite a source without sending the source a visit, so publishers need citation monitoring beside conventional search reporting.

Directories function as intermediary evidence stores. Their pages connect entities with categories, locations, and public assessments, which gives answer systems a source outside the business's own marketing copy. DirJournal's 750-query study found that vertical directories and review profiles repeatedly appeared in business-verification responses.

The intermediary layer still faces risk. An engine can quote its facts while withholding the click, and a platform change can remove citations from view. Traffic growth for some directories does not cancel the broader zero-click trend.

A citation can still influence a buyer without producing an attributable session. The answer may expose a rating, company name, or source label before the user visits another channel. That makes citation visibility useful, but it does not give publishers a direct revenue measure.

Directory Listings and SEO in the AI Era

Directory listings SEO now serves entity verification as well as link discovery. DirJournal's July 2026 study says the highest-scoring businesses appeared on relevant directories and maintained consistent public facts.

Structured fields make a listing easier to parse. A business name connected to a category and location creates an explicit entity record, while ratings or accreditation add evidence that an engine can attribute to an independent source.

Cross-source corroboration strengthens that record. The same name, address, phone number, founding year, and official URL across a company site and directory profiles reduces ambiguity. Conflicting fields can cause an engine to treat matching pages as separate entities.

The scale of directory citation exposure varies sharply, according to the Ahrefs-based AI Citation Index.

Trustpilot's domain appeared in 423,926 ChatGPT citations within that dataset. This is a domain-level count, so it does not mean every Trustpilot-listed company appeared or that a profile alone caused a citation.

Directory choice should follow the buyer's category. G2 may help a software vendor, while Justia supplies legal reference and attorney data. A large citation total outside the company's market can offer less value than a smaller, tightly matched source.

Profile completeness remains a controllable input, while citation selection remains an engine decision. Businesses can correct factual fields and connect their official profiles; they cannot infer from Trustpilot's domain total that their own Trustpilot page appears in any particular answer.

Local SEO Directories: Which Still Matter

Local SEO directories should be prioritized by reach and category fit, not submitted as an undifferentiated list. The tiers below use totals from DirJournal's 27-domain index, with Google Business Profile added as a core local identity surface rather than assigned an unsupported citation count.

Tier 1: Broad Local Identity and Trust

  • Trustpilot: 1,350,175 AI citations in the index.
  • Yelp: 366,501 AI citations, including 177,838 from Perplexity.
  • BBB: 276,739 AI citations, including 146,874 from ChatGPT.
  • Google Business Profile: a core Google Search and Maps business record, listed here without a comparable domain-level citation total.

Tier 2: High-Reach Vertical Sources

  • Software: G2 has 175,865 citations and Capterra has 95,442.
  • Home services and design: Angi has 290,825 citations and Houzz has 153,226.
  • Legal: Justia has 173,590 citations.
  • Real estate and healthcare: Zillow has 85,480 citations and Healthgrades has 25,674.

Tier 3: Agency and B2B Discovery

  • Clutch: 17,867 AI citations.
  • DesignRush: 11,334 AI citations.
  • GoodFirms: 7,885 AI citations.
  • DirJournal: 1,092 AI citations.

The thresholds organize a working shortlist rather than certify listing quality. The 60+ Free Business Directories Ranked by AI Visibility adds submission terms and broader options for businesses building a profile set.

ChatGPT SEO: What Works Now

ChatGPT's citation pattern in the August 2026 index favors Trustpilot at 423,926, Justia at 149,698, and BBB at 146,874. Yelp receives 3,908 ChatGPT citations despite its 366,501 total across all five engines.

The contrast supports a source-format interpretation. Trustpilot exposes review evidence, BBB carries accreditation and complaint records, and Justia combines attorney profiles with legal documents. Yelp's much stronger Perplexity count shows that another engine can value the same directory differently.

DirJournal's direct-query study tested 750 prompts across Claude, ChatGPT, and Perplexity in July 2026. It found that ChatGPT named an average of 9.1 businesses per query, but the live report does not substantiate the separate claim that individual business websites appeared in only 12% of recommendation queries.

ChatGPT SEO therefore needs observable tests, not a universal directory formula. Track whether the brand appears in answer text and whether a citation links to the business, a directory profile, or another source.

Perplexity SEO: a Different Engine, Different Citations

Perplexity cites TripAdvisor 461,088 times in the index, the highest Perplexity count among the 27 directories. Trustpilot follows at 409,084, while Yelp reaches 177,838 compared with 3,908 on ChatGPT.

That gap makes Perplexity SEO a separate measurement problem. A company visible through a Yelp page in Perplexity may remain absent from ChatGPT for an equivalent prompt, even when its directory record has not changed.

The 750-query study gives Perplexity an average of 8.4 named businesses per query. The live article does not contain the brief's Seki Edge or Wayne Dalton examples, so those branded-listing claims are excluded here.

Perplexity's high counts for TripAdvisor and Yelp show strong directory use within this dataset. Calling it the most directory-friendly engine would require a normalized comparison of total citations or prompts across every engine, which the supplied table does not provide.

Google AI Mode and SEO

Ahrefs found AI Overviews on 18.9% of US keywords in its research. Its 2025 click-loss study measured a 34.5% decline from AI summaries, while SparkToro cites a separate Ahrefs result approaching 60%.

Google AI Mode represented 0.34% of searches in SparkToro's January to April 2026 panel. Three months later, Google said at I/O 2026 that AI Mode had surpassed one billion monthly users and its queries were more than doubling each quarter.

The measures are not directly contradictory. SparkToro counted the share of Google search journeys entering AI Mode in a defined US browser panel, while Google reported global monthly users of the product.

The four leading domains combine structured entity pages with substantial reference or review content. The table establishes correlation within the sampled responses, not proof that schema or directory status caused Google to select them.

SEO Trends 2026: the Paid Compensation Trend

The supplied Ahrefs estimates show a sudden rise in paid search cost for Capterra, Clutch, and GoodFirms during 2026. The values estimate the monthly cost of the detected paid keywords rather than disclose invoices or confirmed company budgets.

DirectoryDec 2025 Ad SpendPeak 2026 Ad SpendPeak Month
Capterra$318K$46.6MJune
Clutch$181K$23.7MJune
GoodFirms$0$11.3MJuly
Trustpilot$52K$278KJune
DesignRush$0$0N/A
DirJournal$0$0N/A

Source: Ahrefs estimated paid ad cost values supplied for December 2025 through August 2026.

Capterra's peak is about 147 times its December estimate, while Clutch's peak is about 131 times its starting value. GoodFirms moves from no detected December spend to an $11.3 million July estimate.

The timing supports a defensive-spending hypothesis, but the table cannot establish management intent. Paid campaigns may target growth opportunities, competitor terms, or seasonal demand rather than replace lost organic visits.

Trustpilot also appears in the paid dataset, so it should not be grouped with zero-spend sites. Its $278,000 peak remains much smaller than Capterra's or Clutch's, while DesignRush and DirJournal record no detected spend in the supplied series.

Organic traffic, paid visibility, and AI citations must be reported separately. Combining them into one exposure score would hide the financial cost of paid reach and the uncertain click value of an AI citation.

A quarterly dashboard can keep four columns for each source: estimated organic traffic, paid-cost estimate, AI mentions, and AI citations. The measurement date belongs beside every value because Ahrefs estimates and sampled AI responses change as rankings, prompts, and retrieval systems change.

What Businesses Should Do Now

  1. Claim broad identity profiles. Complete Google Business Profile and relevant profiles on Trustpilot, Yelp, or BBB. Use the official business name and current contact details, then document the update date.

  2. Add the directory that matches the industry. Software companies can assess G2 or Capterra, agencies can assess Clutch, and home-service providers can assess Angi. Citation totals in the AI Citation Index provide a starting point rather than a placement guarantee.

  3. Resolve entity conflicts. Match the business name, address, phone number, founding year, and canonical domain across public profiles. Retire stale locations where the platform permits corrections.

  4. Connect profiles through schema. Add accurate Organization or LocalBusiness markup to the corresponding visible page and reference official profiles with sameAs. The Free AEO Readiness Checker can inspect the site's answer-engine signals.

  5. Measure on a fixed quarterly prompt set. Record brand mentions and cited domains across the engines that matter to buyers. Use Ahrefs Brand Radar, manual tests, or the Free AI Visibility Checker, while keeping model and date details with each result.

A directory profile cannot guarantee a recommendation or citation. It gives an engine another public record to inspect, and its value depends on category relevance and factual completeness. Businesses seeking that additional record can list your business on DirJournal.
