OpenDNS is the predecessor to Cisco Umbrella, a cloud-delivered security service centered on DNS and enterprise network protection. OpenDNS developed a cloud platform that provided threat protection and security enforcement for devices connecting to internet resources. Cisco announced plans to acquire the San Francisco-based company in June 2015 and completed the acquisition in August 2015. Cisco said the acquisition added cloud-delivered threat intelligence, visibility and enforcement capabilities to its security portfolio. The OpenDNS technology subsequently became part of Cisco's Umbrella security offering, and Cisco's current Umbrella website explicitly identifies OpenDNS as now being Umbrella. Current Umbrella capabilities include recursive DNS services, DNS-layer security, cloud security services and secure internet gateway packages. David Ulevitch is publicly documented as the founder and former CEO of OpenDNS.
