There’s been much discussion and debate about our original article about the Top 10 Armies in the World. First written in 2010, we’ve been updating it ever since.
Nearly every country in the world has its own army to protect its interests against internal and external enemies. Most countries like to boast of their military prowess, often claiming to be one of the strongest in the world. Not all can actually back that claim with data and numbers
In an effort to quantify the rankings of the top military forces in the world, we analyzed data on over sixty countries. We based this on the most recent data available at GlobalFirepower. This includes the size of defense budget, number of active military members, tanks and armored vehicles, aircraft and helicopters, and number of naval craft.
Additionally, we considered nuclear capability and recent operations, the latter meaning that the army actually has live combat experience.
We then assigned a weight to each of these components, and finally calculated an overall score for each country. In most places, this differs from the country’s GlobalFirepower rank.
After the calculations were completed, the top ten armies in the world became easily visible as the most powerful militaries in the world.
Most of these armies were involved in the major conflicts of the modern world. Notably, these include World War I, World War II and the Korean War. Additionally, many were involved in conflicts fighting for their own country’s independence.
#10: Turkey
The Turkish Army dates back more than 2,000 years, though the modern day military branches were founded in 1920. With a force of over 730 and a budget of close to $19 billion, it is solidly in the top ten military powers in the world.
It ranks fourth on the list for tanks and armored vehicles, estimated at just over 11,000. Ground forces are additionally supported by an outsize artillery. Out of the nations on this list, Turkey is currently the only without nuclear capability.
With very few exceptions, military service is required of all male citizens after the age of twenty, contributing to the large force and reserve size. After the U.S. and ahead of France, it is the second largest ground force in NATO.
The Turkish Army was involved in the Korean War, recurrent internal Kurdish conflicts, the division of Cyprus, and recently Syria. Its largest conflict to date, however, was the Turkish Independence War. In this confrontation, it fought Russia, Britain, Greece, France and Italy along its borders. It was one of the few larger powers to remain neutral until almost the end of World War II.
#9: United Kingdom
The British Armed Forces were organized in 1661 and have been involved in various conflicts including the Napoleonic Wars, Revolutionary War and both world wars. In fact, only 22 countries in the world were never invaded by British forces.
The British Army has had a significant presence in Northern Ireland and the Balkans. It stood beside the United States in the Gulf War in the 1990s. The army is a powerful force in the ongoing Global War on Terrorism after the attacks of September 11, 2001.
The active duty force of the British military is over 190,000 strong, making it the second largest army in the European Union behind France. The U.K. has a defense budget of over $51 billion annually. Of the top ten military powers, it has the smallest number of active duty members but the fourth-largest budget, behind only the U.S., China, and India.
There are three branches of service. These are the Royal Navy, the British Army proper and the Royal Air Force, also known as RAF.
With nearly 750 aircraft and helicopters and around 5,500 tanks, armored vehicles, and artillery, it is a viable force and an unwavering ally of the United States.
#8: Pakistan
The Pakistan Armed Forces were founded in 1947, and comprises three service branches. It succeeded the former British Indian Army after the country gained independence the same year.
Pakistan’s military history includes recurrent conflicts with its bordering neighbors of Afghanistan and India, the Gulf War and Mogadishu, Somalia in the early 90s.
The country is part of the Islamic Military Counter Terrorism Coalition (IMCTC). As such, it has been active against ISIL and other terrorist groups. Pakistan has also served as an ally to the United States in the Global War on Terrorism. It assisted in the fight against both Taliban and Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan and along its borders.
At the same time, the army maintains close ties with the Chinese military.
This volunteer army consists of an active duty force of over 650,000 personnel. Additional reserve forces are another 550,000 strong. Together, they make the Pakistan Armed Forces into one of the largest armies in the world.
Pakistan’s defense budget is around $11.5 billion. This may be the smallest budget of the top ten military powers, but still far exceeds the defense budget of most other countries around the world.
While on par with U.K. for naval craft, Pakistan boasts several hundred more aircraft and helicopters, over 9,000 tanks and armored vehicles, and a much larger amount of artillery pieces.
#7: Israel
Israel maintains a conscript army. It is the only country in the world that requires military service from both male and female citizens with few exceptions.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) were founded in 1948, but trace their roots to several paramilitary organizations active against the British while they held Palestine. Today, the IDF maintains an active duty force of over 170,000. In comparison, its reserves are enormous, evaluated at around 450,000.
Its fleet is fairly small, but the IDF can field considerable airpower and over 13,000 tanks and armored vehicles.
The Israeli military history includes the Arab-Israel War, the Six-Day War and numerous conflicts with Lebanon, the annexed Palestine, and frequent operations against Iran. As a whole, it is one of the most battle-tested armies of the world.
The United States remains one of Israel’s largest and closest allies, giving the IDF preferential access to new military technology. Israel’s defense budget clocks in at fully $20 billion.
#6: France
Since its struggles during the World Wars, France does no longer enjoy the reputation of a military superpower. These perceptions aside, the numbers tell a different story.
France has a military of over 360,000 strong across the army, navy, air and space force and paramilitary branches. This makes it the largest army in the European Union by numbers. It is unique in letting foreign nationals serve in its forces – in the notorious and elite Foreign Legion. Unusually, the country’s police also form part of the French Armed Forces.
Compared to its one-time hereditary rival, the British Armed Forces, it commands more craft across almost all categories. The exception are some naval classes and artillery pieces. Its budget, however, is smaller than the U.K.’s, at $41 billion.
#5 North Korea
The North Korean People’s Army was established in 1939 and has an impressive size of more than 1,250,000 soldiers. When reserve unit numbers are added to this, estimates are more than seven million soldiers could be activated if needed. This makes the North Korean forces potentially the largest in the world.
Major conflicts in North Korea’s history are the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Tensions between North and South Korea still exist today. Technically, the conflict is a frozen one – it never officially ended between the two.
Its defense budget, at $1.6 billion, is nominally small. Much of its economy, however, is prepared for military use along a total war doctrine. Additionally, North Korea is a relatively close, though erratic, ally of China.
North Korea has confirmed its nuclear and chemical weapons capability in recent years with threats against various countries. This especially includes the United States, mainly for its alliance with South Korea. Over the last decade, it has also emerged as a cyber-war force to be reckoned with.
#4: India
The Indian Army’s roots go back, with only minor interruptions, to the Stone Age. Today, it is the largest all-volunteer ground force in the world with nearly 1.5 million active duty soldiers. Reserves make up a force an additional 2 million strong.
India has never had to institute a draft to staff its ground force. The Indian Army – overlapping with the British Indian Army – was active in both world wars. Subsequently, the Indian Armed Forces fought in conflicts for the country’s own independence. Border skirmishes with Pakistan are common in its history.
The Indian military consists of three branches as well as several paramilitary units, and operates on a budget of more than $61 billion. While its aircraft and helicopter as well as tank and armored vehicle numbers rank it solidly in the middle of the list, it has a relatively small naval fleet. India also has more than eighty nuclear warheads in its possession.
#3: Russia
Russia has undergone numerous changes throughout its military history. This history dates back all the way to 863. The modern day army – the Russian Ground Force – arose in 1992, following on the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Previous Russian military organizations, including the Red Army, saw combat in regional conflicts, both World Wars and numerous Cold War operations. Before the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, it was one of two superpowers in the world. By this point, it had surpassed the United States both in terms of the number of soldiers and nuclear weapons.
The Russian Ground Force draws its soldiers through a military draft. In principle, all male citizens between the ages of 18 and 33 serve for a period of 12 months. There are, however, many reasons for exception and deferral, and bribery is common.
Russia currently has over 1.2 million active duty military members and 2 million in reserves. It operates under a comparatively slim budget of more than $48 billion dollars. In terms of finances, only India, China and the U.S. are bigger spenders. Though its air force and ground capabilities are larger than China’s, the latter has been gaining rapidly, and China possesses a larger navy.
Russia also has the largest number of nuclear warheads in the world – nearly 8,000. This stock, though, is aging, and not all of it is combat-ready.
#2: China
The People’s Liberation Army of China is the largest military in the world in absolute numbers. It numbers nearly 2.2 million soldiers, with a reserve over 500,000 strong. After significant cuts in forces a decade ago, numbers are again increasing.
The Chinese Army arose in 1927. It was active in the Sino-Japanese conflict, World War II, and the Korean and Vietnam wars.
While technically service is a necessity for all men over the age of 18, China has never had to draft soldiers. There have always been more than enough Chinese men who have volunteered for military service to their country.
It has the second largest defense budget, at nearly $240 billion – a full $100 billion more than a decade ago. This corresponds roughly to the combined budget of all previous countries on this list. It also houses nuclear weapons, with estimates putting the number at around 350.
#1: United States
The United States military’s history dates back to 1775, where it arose out of rebel forces fighting the Revolutionary War. With over 1.4 million on active duty, it now has the third largest active duty force ranking behind China and India.
However, the defense budget is what really sets the U.S. apart from all other countries on the list. With a budget of over $750 billion, it exceeds all other military budgets on this list combined by nearly $250 billion, and China’s by over $500 billion.
The U.S. Army and its special forces have participated in every major world war, the Korean War, Vietnam, the Gulf Wars, and leads the Global War on Terrorism.
The modern day Army is an all-volunteer force, though drafts have been used for long periods. It maintains numerous permanent posts throughout the United States as well as Germany, Italy, Kosovo, Japan, Korea, and other countries.
Ranking only behind Russia in the total number of warheads, the U.S. has the largest number of active warheads in the world.
The U.S. also has the largest number of aircraft and helicopters by far with just under 14,000. It’s still comfortably ahead of China in the number of tanks and armored vehicles. Its air dominance also shows in its fleet, which is smaller than China’s, but features numerous aircraft carriers and supporting craft.
Pakistan’s army is neither strong nor great. Pakistan’s army has never won a single war in all its history. Pakistan has always taken support of many terror organizations to stop India from invading into your land and the terror organizations also voluntarily help Pakistan to avoid the Indian influence over Afghanistan. You citizens of Pak are innocent of what your govt. is working on. The Pakistani govt. is playing a double game with the US army and the terrorists. Sorry to say this Pakistanies you will be the ultimate sufferers for you govt.’s deeds. your own intelligence (ISI) is classified as a terror organization. Im an american born indian and i laughed so hard about this india v pakistan fighting….obviously ima choose india being as my family punjab(im sikh), both countries are too f**ked up internally to ever consider fighting each other. Pakistan has problems with taliban and growing tensions with US. india has problems with china and terrorism(same with pakistan) also a huge problem with corruption in both countries.

Pretty sure an American wrote this as it is highly balanced, The US army is the youngest of the lot, and have a reputation (depending on who you ask) for being heavy handed, friendly fire incidents, showing up half way through most wars, and when you finally arrive, seem to have a DSK attitude that if you throw enough money at it, it’ll go away. Took a beating of the British when they torched your Whitehouse and the Vietnamese.

If you do not believe that Turkey have such a strong army like that, you shuold look at Turkey’s national history. in their independence war they defeated 7 countries and they also defeated the world’s the most powerful navy forces (UK) in Gallipolli even their poverty. and now I think they have the 2nd strongest air forces as red evils (they named theirself as it), and also they have world’s the biggest aircraft carrier as an island Cyprus in the middle of the mediterranean sea. and also as the land forces in the middle-eastern countries they are the best because turkish government seperates the 24 percentage of their budget for Turkish army. recently they are producing their own FoF systems and modernizing their F16s and they are the member of F35 aircrafts and EuroFighter aircraft collaborations. and also turkish Maroon Berets (special army commands) is the most powerful special army commands all over the world.. Yes better than Delta Force team of the US. in this region there is no army can defeat Turkey I think.

The French army? one of the best training in the world. Some of the best air-crafts in the world, one of the best navies in the world. had some of the best generals in the world. won all the war they fought in the last 50 years, before that, won 90% of all battle fought in they’re history. longest existing nation in europe. Most technologically advanced nation in Europe closely followed by Germany.Made just about every other army they were up against feel like pussies. The white flag was actually for “OK! We surrender! FRANCE WON!” because France had the white flag in the time of kings. and they invented the most amount inventions. until 1870s no army could rival it on land and even in WW1&WW2 it fell just shy of Germany, Russia, USA and Maybe UK.
Not only am I not surprised that its not in the top 10. I’m surprised that its not in the top 5.
If thay’re not in the top 10, this basically means that you really exaggerated on WW2 defeat besides the fact that all of Europe was conquered including Russia almost up-to Moscow. and in Waterloo, bad weather+disrespect of the command hierarchy made them barely lose the war.

When you are taking about corruption, yes there are a lot of people corrupt but Indian people have the guts to stand up and say that they are corrupt and should be condemned.

Our PM alleged of corruption but not yet proved….. The only thing that Pak was to be proud of is the air force, but the good old days are gone, Indian pilots out-manured American pilots in an international exercise and are declared to be of the finest quality in the world.
Pak had won the previous air battle because of the malfunctioning of the Mig-21s but now we have the Sukoi-30, DasaultRafal, Euro fighter typhoon, Sukoi-32, indigenous LCA, Mig-32, harrier, and with in 4 years we will have the world’s first and Indian made 5th generation aircrafts PAK-FA and AMCA not even the US has a 5th generation aircraft and the rest of the world can simply not afford it.
What does Pakistan have JF-17 and F-16 both which China itself is not interested in recruiting to their air force.

Actually you can put Pakistan army in number 1 according to “my” opinion. Also it is really hard to judge which army is the best because nations keep their secrets to themselves if Pakistan was to expose its military strength then Indian army will look like a child and go back to dancing in bollywood movies. I personally think army is not made of technology or number of soldiers what makes a army strong is a secret knowledge itself. Suppose if we have 10 soldiers who are cowards isn’t it better to have 1 who can overpower them all? Only when war strikes we shall know who is who and what is what babbling in favor of one country over another isn’t going to make difference what makes a difference are when actions are put into use.

M M Alam is the greatest fighter pilot in Pakistan and not in the entire world.
Moreover he did shoot down 5 Indian fighters but not with in a minute. It happned on three different days.
he had shot 1 Hawker Hunter on two different days and on another day he shot 3 Hawker Hunters.
He was a great pilot and all respects to the warrior.
But don’t manipulate history as your country has done for the past 65 years
And not all 5 Hawker Hunters were Indian.
4 were Indian and was shot in 1965 and the 5th was an Israeli Aircraft shot in 1967.

Keeping the emotions and accusations of “immorality” away, on a realistic note: War is rarely decided upon ethics and what not. It comes down to strategic, military, and economic power.
Economic comparison: Pakistan stands no chance.
India has x6 military budget, x15 foreign reserves, x10 proven oil reserves, x10 workforce etc.
Everything comes down to economy. Think about it rationally; naturally, the nation able to manufacture, purchase, and deploy weapons at ten times the quantity is bound to win. Also, there’s not much in pakistan; if Islamabad and Karachi fall, we’re doomed. India on the other hand… we’d have to go around hitting Delhi, Mumbai, Calcutta, Chennai, Bangalore blah blah blah.
Strategic comparison: India is somewhat advantaged.
In total war, India always has the option to turn off the taps. Believe it or not, Pakistan would be forced to surrender within weeks if india diverts indus. International treaties “deter” india from doing so, but as stated, in “total-war”, we’re doomed.
In an invasion however, local militia support is in favour of Pakistan. This arguably makes it difficult/costly to invade Pakistan; providing a defensive strategic advantage. However, this doesn’t stand strong in the prospect of a water shortage and economic crisis.
Military: Pakistan is (arguably) capable of holding off for a little while (couple of weeks?), but will eventually fall. Our military has decent American built weapons. However, once their used up, we’re no match. Even during war, India could just buy out American weapon supplies. They have x10 the money we do. And don’t trust Americans; they aren’t allies.
NOTE: Americans were only supporting us because they wanted assistance with Al-Quaeda and Bin Laden. That story is over, and with the recent diplomatic crisis, we’re screwed for any weapons assistance against India.
Kind of odd to be saying this as a Pakistani… but to be honest, I feel it’s better to be friends with India. We have more to gain from a friendship. Pakistan can significantly benefit (economically) from a trade partnership with India. We need to get rid of the military dictatorship in our country. Our military headquarters is conveniently located 20 min from Islamabad… so anytime our government tries to make progress, they drive by and stage a military coup. We’re paying so much for our corrupt military. Why not spend the money to improve our economy and the lives of our people?

If you still want to fight against other countries go ahead but don’t send those soldiers and let their families curse the government, Go with a gun and kill a man, maybe you’ll know what they know.

Armies were created to help the survival of Humans, not destruction of our own. We maybe Hindu’s, Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists etc.. We mustn’t forget were flesh and bones, We’re humans who care for other people, we’re brothers and sisters all having the same root.
Send your money to the needy, help eradicate poverty and don’t feed the corrupt politicians, Help to have a better life, One day may our kids ask us “What is war?”
Fight for humanism, let people live how they want, teach them, don’t beat them, if you do beat them, then you’ll start a root of hatred, we’re all children yet to learn useful things 🙂

Nice article but some information not complete as armed forces weapons etc.
i have seen a lot of comments and in every comment superiority is the main issue. did any one on the both of side want the solution of the problem. two world war has been fought in Europe killing millions of people. but nothing was gain from these wars. at last Europeans decided that war is not the solution of the problems. in 1993 they establish European union with one currency known as euro. they opened their (German- Polish, German-French, German-Austrian) borders for free trading between their countries. now where ever you go in Europe their is no sign of borders and you don’t know which country you have entered. so now Europeans is going towards progress. our issue is the same but have to resolve it our-self and he can make this region out of poverty. let kashmiri people decide what they want. Pakistan, china, India, Iran can make a coalition as like European union and can work for their interests. Pakistan lack in their political leadership. we need it to take big hatred decisions. no nation is superior to other. all men are equal as in my religion (Islam). so i hope you all understand what i have thought you. so let peace a chance.

I like your culture of society which is largely hierarchical, with high regard for local cultural etiquettes and traditional Islamic values. I also like your traditional dresses. They were very rich in quality and output is unique. The best thing in recent time is that one should appreciate their humanity , kindness what you say …..as for they sheltering nearly 1.7 million Afghan refugees. They were really good at heart….

everyone is just fighting to prove their country to be the best.
it’s OK that you love your country but i does not mean you should hate others.
first respect your opponents then only you can respect yourself.
both India and Pakistan are having best soldiers and combined they can defeat any super powers.
so the big brothers are afraid of that. and they are playing with us as we all know.
from the birth we know that we are enemies, but i haven’t seen any of the countries to take a positive steps to re-unite, and even if any one has taken that was spoiled because of lack of trust.
the main problem is that we don’t trust each other, but why!! we never know and we don’t even bother to built.
we don’t realize that our main threat is not Pakistan or not even India.
It is poverty,inequality in distribution,terrorism,natural calamities and many more.

We are fighting. we just want to win, we don’t want to know what happened to the soldiers who sacrificed their lives in the battle for their own country.

India is not in a state of war with pakisthan if Gov has not stop the indian army entering in to the line of control(LOC).we have won many wars against many countries so we have the large army force through out our borders ie;10,00,0000 of indian soldiers.so india is having large army and its in 4th position among all the countries.JAI HIND to our solders.

Useless discussion. There is no meaning in saying who has more powerfull in this ever interconnected world. I think the more stategic discussion should be to decide who is more “influential” rather than powerfull. You will see how miserable the recent wars ended up to the countries involved in the war. This is when one of the powerfull forces on earth had a war with least powerfull countries in the world. Think about how world would change if the war was between two countries in the top ten list. Say China or US or say Russia or US or say India or US…there will not be a winner most of them are having capacity to destabilize the entire world with striking capability with nuclear weapons. All these players have capacity to damage the world right now. Only way out is to think about how to disarm all these countries with nuclear and other deadly weapons. Fools think that with a powerfull army they can win the war. There is no ecnonmic powerhouse which can fund and manage a war of that scale. Then each citizen has there own reasons to be proud of their nation and army , but reality is no country in this world is capable enough to win a major scale war.
